Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am about to buy a 99 996 with 48k miles; pulled a car fax and it recently failed emissions in CA. I was told by the seller that is is common for Porsche's to fail here and there. Is this true? If there is something wrong it's prob the MAF? What does a new one run (self install). I am in Las Vegas so emissions are not as strict as CA but I dont want to get stuck w/ a car that wont pass....... Thanks for your replies, Jeev

POST 2Original post

Have him take the car in for an emissions test and see if it passes. It is illegal in many States to sell a car if it is known to have failed the test. Have the seller provide proof of recent pass.

POST 3Original post

99 should have no prob. need to know why did not pass. visual, no2, cel, co2 are all reasons for failure

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far as I know engine and exhaust is stock.........

POST 6Original post

You should investigate some more and not take the car unless it passes with flying color. My 02 w 17k mi had CO and NO2 reading that barely detectible. 996 should are LEV and should not fail unless it's modded or something isn't working. Also, investigate the car's service records. Look over RMS past and test drive the 6pd to make sure there is no noise issues.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for everyones help. I am having a full PPI with a compression test done at a Porsche Dealership before I purchase.

POST 8Original post

There are plenty of 99. You are better off going w a 01 or better yet 02 if you can afford it. Shop around and don't fix yourself on only one car.
