If you want you can put a 13mm wrench on the bolt, I just hand tightened the wingnut without having the bolt spinning through.

Unbolt the tray, put the stock bolt from the bottom, bolt the tray back up and use the wing nut to tie the battery down using the factory tie die plate.

Suggestion

Alternatively, you could buy the nut and then epoxy that to the underside of the tray and you now have a threaded hole for the group 49 (or H8) and you can always use a smaller battery in the future.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought I may as well post this up for future reference, my 48 sized battery crapped out after ~2.5 years ( deja vu ), I'm assuming that 48 is just simply undersized for our cars, given that the car comes with 94R from factory. Well cue in 49 sized battery - it costs about half of the 94R and has more cranking power. The only little issue is that the outermost hole for the 49 sized battery on the tray is not threaded. We'll here's the 50 cent solution - run to home depot and and get a metric 8mm 1.25 wing nut. Unbolt the tray, put the stock bolt from the bottom, bolt the tray back up and use the wing nut to tie the battery down using the factory tie die plate. If you want you can put a 13mm wrench on the bolt, I just hand tightened the wingnut without having the bolt spinning through.

POST 2Original post

Curious as to why you have a battery box(and vent as well)?

POST 3Original post

Alp, Im not sure thats a battery box?????? BTW, you could do this with factory hold down like I did:

Battery Brand? Model#? Cost? Thanks...this might help out a lot of people.

That's what I did, except I put the bolt from the bottom to use the wing nut for easy access. I assume you've got a 8mm nut under the tray? The last hole isn't threaded.

POST 7Original post

Oh looked like a battery box for some reason on my phone. I'll have to check again but I'm not sure if my car came with vent tube hooked up, as mine had aftermarket battery. I also assumed since the battery was by the opening of the hood that a vent wasn't needed. I'll have to check mine when I get home.

POST 8Original post

you need to hook up the vent. otherwise, it could explode on you. be very careful. it has happened while someone is working on the battery.

POST 9Original post

Got home and looked. At first I didn't see anything but then upon closer inspection, the PO must have rerouted the vent tube under the tray towards the rear. And since mine came with an Interstate battery, the vent is located in the middle at the back of the battery which also had a rubber elbow that blended in with the heater hoses back there. The only thing you can see is a little nub for the elbow and that's it. Everything else is hidden.

POST 10Original post

Halik, would this work? Take the factory bolt to the hardware store and buy a stainless steel nut that fits, plus a flat washer. Epoxy the bolt to the bottom of the tray and wait for it to set. Then thread the nut to the bolt without worrying about it spinning. Alternatively, you could buy the nut and then epoxy that to the underside of the tray and you now have a threaded hole for the group 49 (or H8) and you can always use a smaller battery in the future.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 10237865

If you're doing that, you should buy a riv nut and use that to get a thread on the plate. Epoxy will shear off for sure.

POST 12Original post

This might be a stupid question but WTF is that hole unthreaded in the first place?

POST 13Original post

This is not a big deal. You can easily reach under the tray and hold a wrench on the nut.

This is why. And it saved Porsche $$.
