Suggestion

In most cases the blame was assumed to be with the owner who left the car parked up unused in the damp weather, or who parked up the car after washing the car without taking the car out for a run where the brakes could be used and the brakes gotten hot enough to dry.

Even before this the rust is bad enough use, perhaps even brake bedding in use would not see the rust removed entirely.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, I have had a few 996s come into the shop lately and there is significant rust on the inside of the rotors right after they drive here from 1 hour distances... What the story here? TIA, Steve

UK cars I read can develop horrific rotor rust primarily on the inner rotor surfaces. This can be so bad the metal begins the flake off. Even before this the rust is bad enough use, perhaps even brake bedding in use would not see the rust removed entirely. In some cases, with early Boxsters and 996s these were replaced under warranty. Not often though. In most cases the blame was assumed to be with the owner who left the car parked up unused in the damp weather, or who parked up the car after washing the car without taking the car out for a run where the brakes could be used and the brakes gotten hot enough to dry. In some extreme cases the car would sit inside the garage until the weekend, be started and driven out on to the driveway, washed, wiped down, then started and driven back into garage, every weekend for weeks at a time. The above was for UK cars. I can believe though in some areas of the USA while the climatic conditions may not be that close to the UK climatic conditions they are close enough and then there are the owners...
