The HID highbeams would be nice but not worth the 10 grand, the Bose would be nice until I replace the audio with aftermarket.
Replace include: the sill, roof frame, seat pans and tunnel

These changes include: the sill, roof frame, seat pans and tunnel to improve torsional strength by 25%.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To my best knowledge, there was essentially no difference between 02, 03 and 04 cars.
I'm itching to pull the trigger on my dreamcar (well all the dreamcar I can afford anyway) a 911 TT. Ive got my eye on a few 996 Turbos and right now my current decision to make is pre/post 2002. I found an 01 I like with about 60K on the clock for under 40 Grand and an 03 I like with about 40K on the clock for about 50 Grand.
I'm still a 911 noobie, I know there was a slight refresh applied to the 2002s and up. Ive read that the chassis/suspension is a little stiffer, and the headlights are Bi-Xenon and the radio is bose standard.. stiffer chassis is always good but as the car will see maybe 1 track day/autox's a year its not something to shell out 10 thousand over. Is there anything else to make the 02/03s the better decision? The HID highbeams would be nice but not worth the 10 grand, the Bose would be nice until I replace the audio with aftermarket.
From the reading Ive done the Turbo models seem to be reliable and not prone to faults; so is the lower mileage car worth pursuing if everything else is equal?
Buy the newest Porsche within your budget.
The turbo's GT1 Mezger motor is great and better than the m96. I think the weakest link in the turbo motor is one or two coolant pipes that are glued together can separate.
The other downside is maintenance which more expensive unless you work on cars yourself.
I was eyeing a '07 997.1 turbo myself. One of the last GT1 turbo motors.
Have fun shopping!
It's actually a pretty common statement when people ask which year to buy. I believe that the general thinking is that the 2001 was the first of the 996 turbos, and there were incremental improvements through the production run. Also, a 2001 car is older than a 2004 car. Things wear out and break with time and use. I don't think it was intended to be a negative statement towards the 2001 car, but just general advice for a used car purchase.
If you compare the 2002+ turbo to the 2001 turbo, you'll see that there are several changes. These changes include: the sill, roof frame, seat pans and tunnel to improve torsional strength by 25%. Additionally, the B-pillar was modified to accept new seatbelt tensioners and force limiters. The interior was upgraded with the addition of new cup holders and a locking glovebox. PCCB and X50 became availabe options in 2002.*
I believe that early 2001 turbos were equipped with solid spoke wheels, like the C4S. The rest of the turbos were equipped with the lighter hollow spoke wheels.

Thank you for your pithy, useless comment.
You obviously don't read much or just critique other's posts. I don't see your suggestions.
I suggested newer because he OP was comparing 01 and 02 MY.
Newer will generally have updates, improvements and less potential problems.
2002 with 40K miles private party and full maintenance records versus 2004 with 80K miles at an auction. Per your dictum, the 2004 is clearly a better car to buy.
For the turbo cars, as Dennis noted, the big difference is between 01 and 02+. To my best knowledge, there was essentially no difference between 02, 03 and 04 cars.
Check on turbo forum, lots of insight. 01's also might suffer 2nd gear pop-out issues unlike 02+. Chassis difference are debated every time they come up. 02 has glovebox and cup-holder. There are some other known issues that should be looked at in PPI. Again, lots of info on turbo forum. Good luck with your search - its a great ride.
