Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Well, this proved to be quite time consuming especially while waiting for a fuel line that needed to be replaced.
Leading evidence: 'quite time consuming especially while waiting' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'quite time consuming especially while waiting' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I was worried that I could have had a cracked cylinder head or had a blown head gasket so I started by checking the oil.

Good idea to change the water pump also change the coolant.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So this all started with a rough running car and smoke coming out the tailpipe as outlined here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...e-trouble.html
I decided that in addition to doing the repair myself, I would also do some major maintenance and a few modifications.
Air Oil Separator
Intake Manifold Gaskets
Belt
Clean MAF and K&N Intake
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Tubes
Coils
Fabspeed Exhaust and Cat Delete Pipes
Oil Change / Filter / Drain plug
Cabin Filter
Fuel Filter
.... and LOTS of Cleaning!!!
I was worried that I could have had a cracked cylinder head or had a blown head gasket so I started by checking the oil. Went to drain it and the drain plug was completely stripped. Had to get a monster screw backing out tool and heat the plug to get it out. Oil was dark but showed no signs of water... good!
Decided to remove the exhaust to do the plug work... especially since I had a set of Fabspeed cans waiting to go on. Spark plug tubes were not much fun to remove but was able to do them all with a long flat head screw driver and boat plug with sandpaper wrapped around it. Everything else has gone pretty smoothly.
Hopefully I have taken care of most everything that should be done on a car about to round the 100k mile mark. Judging by the oil, the previous owner wasn't super meticulous about the maintenance schedule.
I still have a few more hours of work to get the AOS in and the rest of the engine buttoned up.
I hope to have a well running car within a week. Its been quite a bit of work but I'm glad I've done it myself. We'll see if it was worth it very soon.

ditch the k&n. they contaminate the maf (imho). stock filter is best. $0.02 new fabspeed sounds good to me! diy projects are the best. i try to do as much as i can too. saves money. provides satisfaction. good luck.
I thought about doing this. The shop that the previous owner used said they had done the water pump within the last few years... whats the usual life expectancy? Easy/hard job?

The intake came with the car so I don't have stock air box. I'll stick with it for now and see if I have any issues.
I do enjoy saving money by doing my own work... but my back hates me for it!

I have about 10k miles on my K&N on my Porsche with no issues. Also have a K&N on all my other cars including my 35k a year work car. And guess what they all have MAFs on them and none of them have ever had an issue. So, I say leave it on there. Just don't over oil the damn thing and you are good to go and get to add the intake sound to the sweet symphony that is your Porsche!
UPDATE!
Well, this proved to be quite time consuming especially while waiting for a fuel line that needed to be replaced. After I got the car buttoned up, I turned the key. LOTS OF SMOKE! ... and it continued to run terribly with smoke for what seemed like hours. There must have been a ton of oil in some of the cylinders that needed to be burned off.
Finally the smoke stopped but the car continued to stumble. I'd get various misfire codes but a misfire on cylinder #2 was always present. I decided to swap the coil and plug from #2 to #1 to see if the problem moved. Sure enough, all that oil fouled a brand new plug. Popped in a new spark plug and shes been good to go.
Honestly, reading all this crap on here about IMS failure and cracked cylinder heads had me really nervous. The car runs like a champ now and it cost me less then $800 for everything! That wasn't going to happen at the dealer...
Thanks,
-JRW
