Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Had the car over a pit earlier, discovered a leak from the rear left of the engine ( looking from behind car). Its to the left of the sump and from an area with a large nut. ( i should have taken a picture). I'm assuming this nut has a gasket that needs replacing, but we can;t work out what the nut is for or attached to, we think its engine oil... Anyone any idea what it is and what i'm on about !! Cheers A

POST 2Original post

Interesting, if you can take a picture of the area we can better assist. Try to include a few shots.

POST 3Original post

Sounds like it is coming from one of the spark plug tubes, no biggie, they are very inexpensive.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

its def not from the plugs, its a small tubular metal piece vertical to the ground, its only on the left side, no similar piece on the right. I think i'll have to find a picture of the underside and try to highlight it

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, i've attached a picture got from the net. I've circled in red where the leak is coming from... any ideas?

POST 6Original post

Are you sure its not seeping out of one of the plug tubes and landing near that bolt at the bottom of the Vario Cam Cover.

POST 7Original post

Try cleaning the area....take it out and run it, then check again to see where fresh oil is coming from.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

nope, the wet oil is around the bottom, i think seepeing from the thread. i cleaned it up today and put a little silicon around the thread for now. Its not too bad, but would like to know what it is so i can sort it, i don;t want to unscrew the bolt until i know what the fluid is that i'm going to lose....

POST 9Original post

The "bolt" that you have circled is one of the chain tensioners. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...ft_Bearing.htm scroll down to pic #77 "To change the chain adjuster crush washers, the engine only needs to be locked at 1 (or 4) TDC. The cam tools are only needed to remove the cam covers, you will need a 32mm (1 /14 inch) socket to remove the adjusters. I just changed out my IMS chain adjuster this weekend, you will lose about 1 cup of oil in the process. The 1-3 adjuster can be seen from the bottom, for the 4-6 you will need to unbolt the A/C compressor to get access to the adjuster." also: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...placement.html

POST 11Original post

It is probably leaking from the AOS and the oil going down to the bolt Robert
