Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I didnt go with one of their shifters but rather bought a 997 assembly and then replaced the bits inside it with the function first kit and then dropped it into my 996.

The biggest change I noticed was the solid feel I got when shifting into first, as opposed to with the stock setup where it felt like I was in muddy water hunting for the gear.

I put this in about 6 months ago and can attest to the fact that its been running solid.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting ready to buy their shift kit upgrade and noticed that theyre now selling 3 different shifters as well. Has anyone looked into these?
I just bought a used 997 shifter assembly but having known that they sell these, I mightve just gone for this instead.
I bought the one that Ben machines. I also have his version of the short shifter. Improved the eBay shifter that was in there a lot. I don't know if this lever works with a stock shifter though.

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the "black" as it is "
24% shorter than 996 and 10% shorter than 997," according to the site.
I need to ask Luka if the unit will work with a stock shift ****, as I am hoping to keep my original ****.
BTW, kits are 10% off through the 28th, too.
Hey everyone -- thanks for checking this out and inquiring about it!! Been super busy with BFCM and a revamping the new website (
function-first.com
) with a bunch of newly released (and more upcoming!) products, so I apologize for the delayed response.
The shift levers are designed together with and to be used with the existing
SHIFT-RIGHT Ball Bearing Retrofit Kit
, which is why they are offered as a package on the product page.
These remove ALL play from the shift console, while preserving a refined (read: NOT overly stiff/notchy) feeling, and with the optionality to choose a lever throw that conforms to your preferred driving style.
The OEM ***** work with this, as do the
CLASSIC SHIFT *****
. And to further ensure factory-like fitment, the
"Slightly" Short Shifter
levers follow the same contour as the OEM levers - bend at the top and bend at the bottom. I can go into more detail why, but this distinction is important to optimize fit and function.
And if you already have a SHIFT-RIGHT retrofit kit, I will absolutely offer just the lever portion for you! Please reach out via PM or EMAIL.
I will also be sending an email out to previous customers AND I will update the product page with that info.
Please reply here with any other questions - I'd love to use this forum to discuss the more technical and design-decision details of the kit.
And HAPPY MOTORING for the extended weekend!
Here's how the 3 throw lengths compare with one another on the Carrera transmission...
Compared to the 996 OEM standard-throw shifter
:
- choose
WHITE for 10% shorter shifts
(reduction of 0.4-inches in travel from 3rd to 4th).
- choose
BLACK for 24% shorter shifts
(reduction of 0.9-inches in travel from 3rd to 4th)
*just a touch shorter than the 997 OEM standard-throw shifter*
.
- choose
BLUE for 34% shorter shifts
(reduction of 1.3-inches in travel from 3rd to 4th)
*comparable to 997 OEM Short "Sport" Shifter option*
.
And this question has come up a bunch since I released the shift levers...
I don't offer the shift levers by themselves on the website, BUT
if you already have the SHIFT-RIGHT Ball Bearing Retrofit Kit installed and you'd like to add a Shift Lever, I can split the kit up for you
.
Please shoot me a PM or send me an email to arrange and I'm more than happy to facilitate!
^^^ A vendor listening to their customers . That's customer service in a nutshell . I love my FF shift kit and round shift **** . If I ever decide to add short shift I know where I will be buying .

Nope, I went with the standard shift right kit. Didnt change the cables. The shifting definitely feels more solid. I wouldnt say its night and day but you do feel an improvement.
when you say that its not a night and day improvement, would you say all the slop is that comes with the factory bushings are removed? Or do ya mean that there is still some play with the function first kit
I think its a question of how much slop you have before you do the upgrade. The biggest change I noticed was the solid feel I got when shifting into first, as opposed to with the stock setup where it felt like I was in muddy water hunting for the gear.
The others have gotten better as well. I think for me, I partly assumed that it would be this almost gun-like feel, precise metallic sound, etc. And its not that. But it is better. And I have more piece of mind knowing that the components are aluminum and also simply the fact that I put it together myself and now know exactly what the bits inside are.
In a perfect world, Id love a shorter throw from 1st to 2nd.
Hope that helps
I have a stock 996 plastic shift lever unit + Shift Right bits installed. It took all of the play out of that assembly. It made the shifting more precise and predictable. I still don't like how it shifts. I've been spoiled I guess, by having had several cars with truly wonderful shifter action.
