Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Inspect first' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'safe bet' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check maintenance records and a' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The only issue I had was a bad foglight/light switch which was replaced with a new part.

I have a price agreed pending checking maintenance records and a test drive (insured for storage at the moment).

but you are relying on the skill and competence of a mechanic you don't know that well to find, diagnose and repair anything that might not be right on the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I have been asking some questions here in preparation for purchasing a C4S but was going to wait until the new year to look in earnest. Suddenly a search popped up a car only an hour from here, black on black, just what I was after! I had a look, it looks to be in great condition. I have a price agreed pending checking maintenance records and a test drive (insured for storage at the moment). How cool!
I spoke to the mechanic that has been looking after the car (well respected guy, Otto in Port Coquitlam) who questioned the need for a full PPI since the car is in great shape. I thought this sounded reasonable but I'm having second thoughts. Everything I read says get a PPI! So I think I will get another mechanic to have a look. Any opinions?
Cheers Ben
I bought my car without a proper ppi, which was in hindsight a mistake. Thank goodness there was nothing seriously wrong with my car but I could really have got burned. My suggestion, get a PPI done, ask for the to check shaft deviation values as well. I did my "post purchase" inspection at Scan Auto in North Van. Good guys.
Wonder why ims bearing was not replaced when getting the new clutch. It is recommended by most shops.
There is no questioning prudent consumerism. A PPI for a high-performance German sports car is standard procedure. Unless the seller is a P-Car dealer and selling it with a CPO, get it inspected.
Insured for storage is a red flag. If you intended to sell a car, it should be ready to roll unless it is for parts or restoring.
Drive it and get it inspected first...

I really don't think that's the case. There is certainly plenty of talk about it on this forum, but realistically I don't believe this has become a 'standard' item at most shops/dealers. Please don't make it sound like the previous owner of this car somehow did something wrong by not having it changed.

Car fell in my lap... Damn! That had to hurt!
But seriously, get a PPI done. And if possible get it done at a shop that has never worked on the car before.
Glad you said that - it makes me feel better. I did not get a PPI done when I bought my 04 40th AE in 2009 with 12,000 miles from the dealer - it was CPO. I figured if there was anything wrong, the CPO would cover it.
The only issue I had was a bad foglight/light switch which was replaced with a new part. My PPO ran out last June, and that's when I had the IMSR procedure done along with clutch, AOS, spark plugs, and other "while you're in there" type of stuff.
I handled my inspection the same as the OP--talked to the Porsche mechanic, who told me the car was tip top but that he'd be glad to take my $300 and regurgitate the same words if I was so inclined. I wasn't and kept the money in my pocket and the car has been fine, notwithstanding a few things that wouldn't have shown up on a PPI in the first place.
A PPI is a must ... but as you know, Porsche mandates the best cars on the assembly line are painted black. So I suspect it will pass with flying colors. I would not have the same level of confidence if the car in question were, say, red or yellow.
Probably a safe bet... but you are relying on the skill and competence of a mechanic you don't know that well to find, diagnose and repair anything that might not be right on the car. Additionally, while I like to trust people, there are shops that might avoid the full truth in favor of a long-time customer over someone they don't know.
As the old journalism phrase goes, "If your mother says she loves you, check it out." (i.e. don't believe anything without proof)
Thanks all, I will get a ppi arranged. Both the mechanis of choice have worked on the car which IMO is actually a good thing - better to have that issue than have service history with someone dodgy!
Cheers Ben
Oh dear. Didn't even get to the ppi, the guy who did the clutch and rms told me he didn't do the IMS bearing because camshaft deviation was too much to fit the locking tool. His description was 10 minutes or 10 years to a major engine rebuild. Not so good!
Cheers Ben
