I have a remanufactured Porsche engine I had installed 3 years ago now, because of an intermix failure...

Or is this just another owner that forgot that engines require clean oil in a specific quantity and viscosity in order to run properly?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Saturday evening I exited the freeway after about a 20 minute trip from my house to an outdoor car show in Scottsdale. As I rolled to a stop on the exit ramp my idle shuddered and rumbled then stalled.
I didnt hear any unusual mechanical sounds so I restarted it and drove off the ramp to a nearby parking lot. (100') The engine had little power and stuttered until it stalled and I rolled into a parking spot.
Tried cranking it again and it would not start, now it was making a sound like it wanted to start but a knocking from one of the cylinders. I called for a tow and had it dropped off at Becks European. They are checking it out now.
Hoping for some good news today
03 c2 with 70k and LN IMS retrofit.
Your in good company. Exact same thing just happened to be this morning 9:10am. Getting a tow and we'll see. Maybe there was a partial 996 solar eclipse this morning!
When my maf died it was very similar. Rolled to a stop, clutch in, all the lights on the dash came on, bye. It would start again when the car cooled off but wouldn't hold an idle when warm.
Nothing confirmed yet but Frank found some plastic timing chain guide material and some main rod bearing material in the oil pan. They are removing the right cam cover this afternoon to investigate further. Either way it looks like a major issue requiring a rebuild.
I'll take the maf fail instead if I could LOL
you said no mechanical noises?
why did they drain the oil and look in there?
just wondering how they got there from here...did they rotate the motor? check fuel and spark...I mean its kinda weird but maybe they ended up there...not started
Route66 No update yet. I'll let you know when I get one. Off the top of his head he said fuel pump. I just got my car out the week before for shift cables, so I'm in no rush right now. I'll probably follow up Thursday or Friday to find out.
Hope your issue is solved with minimal effort and only a little $.
I probably interpreted the knocking noise as a misfire when I tried to crank it after it stalled for the second time.
I’m assuming they also cranked or rotated it and recognized the noise as something they are familiar with prompting the removal of the pan.
I’ve thrown rods in other cars before and I heard nothing like that or anything other sound that is described by others on this forum when something catastrophic occurs to our 996’s
Hopefully I will have time to get over there tomorrow to see what they found.
Well your car is in good hands, Becks are by far Porsche Experts... i just dropped my car off there today to get a new clutch, and while at it IMS AOS RMS done too!
It appears that I may have a spun rod bearing probably on bank 2. Beck’s is tearing down the engine and I may be heading towards a rebuild. They inspected the cylinders with a scope and the pistons look clean.
I could see some small bits of metal and chain guide material in the oil pan.
At this point depending on what condition the cylinders are in I could go with either a rebuild with new LN sleeves to 3.8 or just stay with what I have.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
thnxs
No, usually you can use most of the engine parts again. Just good cleaning and inspection. New bearings and maybe crankshaft.
In this case I'm not so sure that the diagnosis is right, atleast in my case car idled fine. Just the tapping noise telled it's sad story.
And there was lots of metal debries in the oilfilter and oil...
Have your indy tested the compression??
no compression test. The car would not start the second time and then later in the shop would not crank at all, frozen
so i'm hoping most of the parts are good and at intial inspection they seemed to be. Like you said the crank and bearings took the brunt
These car and engine are supposed to be bullet proof...this is the first time i heard a spun rod bearing with just 70K....
Sometimes i'm questioning myself regarding the reliability of these 911...
Bye Bye
Robert
911 2000
they are not bullet proof....

but that isnt the intended use of "these car" - I think you're suppose to drive them...and then they wear.
some wear well, some need fixin along the way...they all wear, they all need fixin'
Oddly enough, and I know I might be alone on this one... but I am really starting to like pictures of severe engine carnage that Jake posts from time to time. I think you called it "flat 6 hell" Jake, but all joking aside... it's almost fun to see this stuff... tickles a certain part of the brain ...
And I know this is somewhat of a religious topic, but I am guessing ARP rod bolts (without thread locker) using their special moly lube stretched to the rod bolt kit 204-6301 spec of .0095-.0100 or 45ft lbs might have prevented this failure.
Or is this just another owner that forgot that engines require clean oil in a specific quantity and viscosity in order to run properly? (no offense to OP, could have been a PO, I'm just sayin'...)
Trust me, no one loves carnage better than me.. Even if its my own engine blown to bits I LOVE carnage.
I have 40' of shelving in my old shop covered with broken parts, true offerings to the Gods of speed... I have been collecting that stuff for 30 years, since I was a kid and its my form of a Diploma...
The rod bolts being spaghetti is one of the issues, the other is connecting rods that aren't much better.. I have DOZENS of these examples, but I dare not post them.. That title of "Fear Monger" would pop up in less the 15 minutes if I did.
Anyone who has attended my class has seen them and seen the parts first hand.
None taken Logray.
The oil at the time of failure was M1 15-50 with about 3k miles from the last change. I know the owner before me kept if fresh and level with M1 0-40
66, Im afraid the I had a similiar experience this saturday. Pulled out from a stop sign and engine quit in 1st gear. Tried to start it up and it sounded very bad, mechanical clanking etc. The 4S is now at the shop and I was told one of the connecting rods failed. Looks like I am rebuilding the motor... but its going to get upgrades as needed including an accusump and IMS bearing. I track quite frequently so this has given me a chance to make sure the motor stays strong for many more miles.
$hit happens mate... Sorry to hear of this.
I will be starting a new thread with the engine rebuild in the next week or so. Many pictures and questions to come...
You asked for it.. Parts here starting from the 547/ 4 Cam Carrera engine, 356, 914, VW Type 1 and M96/M97 through a 2008 Cayman. This isn't even all of it, so much that it keeps falling off the shelves so we had to box some of it up. Note those driveshaft pieces.. Those are from our engine dyno- We have made so much power and RPM that the dyno has exploded on a few occasions.
Hey Phil, looks like ill be in the passenger seat at the next couple events. TuneRS in Coral Springs is who I use for service on the car if Im not up for the task. Very experienced shop and great guys to deal with thus far.
So it's the oil? I knew it! You need to run 0w40. I wonder if I ought to do a search for prior oil threads...
All kidding aside. I'm sorry for your misfortune. I hope you get it back with minimal wallet pain and suffering. I just had my tranny rebuilt on the 99 996 a few months ago and went with the IMS upgrade, RMS, and AOS also.
It's got 113,000 miles and keeps on ticking.
Looks like just like computers, the broken parts add up fast. My point when you are in the business of fixing broken somethings you will have a hell of a lot of broken somethings! Lets not start a panic here
Wow!!!!
Those pictures are amazing, thank for sharing Jake....
