Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The hoses to worry about are the once close to the engine, I've replaced all of them after finding one bad.
Leading evidence: 'Replace of them' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill tool' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If this is something you want to do, you should consider getting a vacuum fill tool.

I had a spare hose, but decided that I needed to replace another hose which I didn’t have.

Suggestion
My process has been to replace the hoses closest to the engine using other repairs as an excuse.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ive only used it on my 6.4 F350, but it worked great, just needs air create the vacuum
I have been working on my 996 2002 cab. The drivers side cooling fan wasn't coming on. Took off the fender and cleaned out the crap in there. which was considerable. Ordered a new fan, I probably could have just replaced the resistor.
WP and engine mounts were replaced about 10k ago
my question, it seems there are an awful lot of hoses between both radiators and the engine. seems like a lot of potential for leaks? esp being hidden under the vehicle.
how often do you replace these? I unfortunately dont have a lift or id go that route... just curious as to what others have / are doing.
The hoses to worry about are the once close to the engine, I've replaced all of them after finding one bad. There is one especially to watch out for; on the drivers side close to the muffler you can see(looking from underneath the car, no jack needed) that there is one with a moulded T-joint. This T-joint will develop cracks and leak after some time.
Agree with Nick on all of it. My process has been to replace the hoses closest to the engine using other repairs as an excuse. If this is something you want to do, you should consider getting a vacuum fill tool. Its not a lot of money but it fully removes the air all at once.
I found one of my high speed cooling fans wasn't coming on either. Turns out I had a relay missing. No idea why a previous owner would remove a fan relay, but worth double checking if you haven't checked them all already.
Are there as many valves in the 996 system as there is in the 991? I too have been thinking of changing mine in my 2001 996 c4 (112k) but wondering if messing with it and causing air locks is worth the hassle? None of mine leak but after 23 years of age and 112k they might need to be addressed. Does the vacuum tool work well? is it hard to do? I'm fairly handy DIY'er but just heard of so many nightmares of Porsches cooling system that it's almost better to bring it in somewhere?
There are around 30 hoses for the cooling system.
I can’t remember the exact number.
Replacing them all would be expensive!
I just had the hose that is between the driver side radiator and the center radiator start to leak.
It was only 6 years old.
That’s young for a 996 hose.
I had a spare hose, but decided that I needed to replace another hose which I didn’t have.
There are definitely a bunch of hoses in the fender well.
So I’m stuck waiting for parts.
