If OTOH you enjoy autocross, HPDE, and the like, you might want to consider replacing the internals with a set from Guard, or simply installing a Guard LSD.

My '99 has an LSD and over 90,000 miles. What kind of maintenance does the LSD need? I'm assuming that, at this point, if the prior owners never did anything with it, the LSD is functionally useless at this point.

Apart from an oil change there is no maintenance possible. The clutch discs inside the LSD wear with use. Use in the sense that when there are differences in grip and/or rotational speed left to right and significant torque (thrust or brake) is applied, then the locking action is used. Driving in a straight line at constant speed does not cause wear to the clutch discs inside the LSD because both wheels rotate at the same speed. Once worn the discs can only be replaced. The 15Nm is a check for the correct amount of pre-load after re-assembly. As far as I know it is not a conclusive test to find out whether an LSD requires a refurbishment or not.

Replace with Guard internals. I seriously doubt the factory OEM is worth their weight in dirt. If they are anything like the ones that come with the GT3, they are probably toast

The factory LSDs for the 996 were weak to begin with and wear out quickly. You can purchase a rebuild kit that provides new clutch discs, etc. But if your driving is limited to street use, you are unlikely to notice much of a difference. If OTOH you enjoy autocross, HPDE, and the like, you might want to consider replacing the internals with a set from Guard, or simply installing a Guard LSD. Cheers,
