Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
No, You will have the same thing you have now, a key that starts the car, provided that you also change the blade to the new head.
Leading evidence: 'Replace blade' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace blade' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm lead to believe that it's only the transponder chip that needs programming using software and a connection.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been trying to learn about keys/fobs due to a fault with mine and the guys on the 911 uk forum have been very helpful but are also probably fed up with me! So it's your turn.
My remote isn't working and all the reseting etc has failed, PITA. So I've got a virgin key on the way, never been programmed key or transponder.
Question is if I swap my original transponder into the new key should I just be able to then manually syncronize the key fob to the car to allow remote locks using the key in the door, unlock, and press the button method? Or is there more to it than that?
I'm lead to believe that it's only the transponder chip that needs programming using software and a connection.
Thanks in advance.
Sorry I wasn't clear, the transponder is fine, car starts and drives, the fob won't remote open the locks. To be clear:
I will swap correctly programmed transponder chip into new key.
Can I then sync the lock/alarm operation between the fob/car by going through the key in lock, unlock car, press lock/unlock button?
I understand that only the transponder needs dealer proramming (that's what the bar code tag relates to) and the key fob itself is manually programmed by going throughthe sequence described.
No, You will have the same thing you have now, a key that starts the car, provided that you also change the blade to the new head.
The dealer will have to program the code for the RF section of the new remote to the car. If you have a working remote bring that also, they need both to do it correctly.
Can I just ask do you have experience of this on a 996 as my auto electrician is adamant that there is no computer programming possible on this type of key.
Went through this right after I got my car 3 years ago.
When the car was delivered it came with 3 keys, two with transmitters and one valet key with no transmitter. All three had transponders that allowed them to start the car.
The transmitter (key head) and Immobilizer (car) work with a rolling code. Each time the Immobilizer is interrogated it sets a new code for that transmitter.
The new key head will come with a barcode number. This barcode is used to introduce the new key's transmitter and transponder to the car's immobilizer. (That is
Program
the
CAR
to recognize the KEY.)
The immobilizer in the car can store a limited number of codes. When the dealer programs a new key they clear the stored information for non-working keys from the memory. That is why you bring all working transmitters (keys) with you when getting a new key introduced to the car.
