what it teaches it the feel of the engagement point and how to fether it in, clutch wear = very little (no gas, high rpm slipping) the foot will learn to release enough to engage, and keep the motor running....its like magic, taught about 6-7 people that way

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

32 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

It worked out, but you probably got away with an error by making her learn on your work car.

No unique explicit quoted action; no causal link assigned

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, here's what happened. In the lead up to the GT3 purchase, the plan was to trade in the C4 Cab. Ultimately, per the initial plan, Katie was going to get rid of her Maxima for a BMW 135 or 335 coup. Well, somewhere in the process she had the idea, which admittedly I had thought also, but dared not say, that she just take the C4 as her daily driver and forgo the bimmer. Okay, great idea, I love the cabriolet and was not at all excited to see it go so this was huge awesome. Here's the problem, she couldn't really drive a stick shift. But we are almost there! To her credit, she has been practicing in my company Scion xB and has made a great deal of progress. But, so far she has only driven the Pcar in a parking lot. But hopefully today will be the day! Sun is shining, forecast calls for high of 61, she is listed as my secondary member on my PCA membership, she has a Porsche hat of her own, and sunglasses to match the car. So, if anyone has any pearls of wisdom or advice for my soon to be very fast wife, share away! Per Rennlist tradition and Protocol #76, pics attached, bonus of wife wearing Flying Lizard crew shirt given to me by ShoreTel:

POST 2Original post

A Porsche is sexier than any other accessory she can wear. That should do it.

POST 4Original post

It's only a clutch... (and it's a pretty strong clutch). Laugh at mistakes - don't make her feel bad.

POST 5Original post

Now that is a win win. My wife can drive stick and is still afraid to drive mine. Enjoy.

POST 6Original post

OHHH you got the GT3!!!! NICE!! Bobby, may I ask what you do for a living?

POST 7Original post

Find a seldom used country road with very little traffic, have your wife drive with you in the passenger seat, and just let her drive and shift on her own at her pace. In the meantime, you should refrain from making any comments unless your wife is asking for help...relax. Soon she'll gain confidence and ability and wll be asking you to drive the GT3 instead.

POST 8Original post

OH - Tip: I used this on every person I taught stick to. - parking or open area with no cars, doensnt have to be too large. Give them one foot only....the clutch....no gas...from a dead stop let the clutch out till till it is fully out, then back in.. stop and repeat... for 20-30 minutes after that it's easy.... what it teaches it the feel of the engagement point and how to fether it in, clutch wear = very little (no gas, high rpm slipping) the foot will learn to release enough to engage, and keep the motor running....its like magic, taught about 6-7 people that way

Nice Idea. Maybe I will let me wife try it... ehh maybe not.. The only one that can break the 996 is me.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: She logged 20 miles so far this morning, couple country roads, no stalls and only a few shudders. Towards the end of the drive she got up to 70 after a few quick clean shifts.... Then I saw the madness start to take hold!

POST 11Original post

She'll want a GT3 next...are you two interested in adoption?(me)

POST 13Original post

Bobby, how about letting her learn how to shift in the GT3?

POST 14Original post

Very nice collection! Glad you will keep the Cab! Its so cool when a woman can drive standard transmission. My wife does too so that allows me to have a few manual cars at home

POST 15Original post

You're very lucky to have two beauts! Contgrats to both of you for learning something new, and patiently supporting the newness! As has been said, it's only a clutch and I think you two will be so much happier in two p-cars! On the down side, when you go out together who gets to drive?

POST 16Original post

After his wife learns to drive the cab, then...the GT3.

POST 18Original post

Lovely story -- thanks for sharing. I also think the shirt is great (want one) and the GT3 is .... well what can I say. It's making my eyes mist up.

Did she have that twinkle in her eye an the **** eating grin on her face? When my wife drove my boxster, i swore i heard a cackle when it hit 6k rpm. It's awesome when the women in our lives enjoy driving our cars also.

POST 21Original post

you guys are so cute together. I know you are not 18.. but damn you look it!

POST 22Original post

Plus 1 on Ivangene's idea! Taught all my daughters (3) that way and my wife on a Harley, too. No gas, just letting out the clutch. I took them out to our airstrip (grass) and let them go by themselves for a half hour starting and stopping. Easy/Peasy

POST 23Original post

Her yellow shoes belong with the GT3!!! Get her some Guards Red shoes!!!!

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8438440

Funny you mention this, she was literally just on Zappo's looking for some red Puma Speed Cats! Just what she needs.... more shoes!

POST 25Original post

Been teaching my son to drive in the xD. That car is too figity, breaks too touchy . To learn to drive stick you just need to get out and drive it daily . I've never been able to teach my wife, could only get her out of the parking lot once and by here self once. This was in a s2000.

POST 26Original post

Love the matching glasses. Watch out if she starts wearing the yellow ones...

POST 27Original post

Well done. I need to work on my script to talk the spouse into our first P-car.

POST 28Original post

Good for you and your wife! I taught one of my daughters to drive stick on my 996 a few years back. No worries. Next step...heel and toe...

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8454886

I wish! Actually, next step is teaching her to safely pull in and out of the garage. That's the next psychological roadblock. So far, I've been backing it out before I leave for work in the morning and putting it away at night.

POST 30Original post

It worked out, but you probably got away with an error by making her learn on your work car. That could have backfired I know you were trying to save the clutch on the Porsche, the question you have to ask is what will be more expensive... A clutch or a divorce?

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 8454378

A woman with two black eyes didn't listen the first time.

POST 32Original post

this is gonna get expensive.... but it might be a good problem. Enjoy!
