I use the straps because I don't trust (completely) the SS hoist wires.

Interesting....I was thinking that in AZ, etc., during the brutal summer months, it might be good to use the hardtop for better insularion.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious. My car came with a hard top that I don't ever plan to use. I drove the car home, took it off, put in the back of the truck, athe took it to the storage unit. Do I need to keep it for valuation purposes?

POST 2Original post

I would guess that if you're in an area with warm weather year-round, losing the hardtop won't devalue the car. On the other hand, if you want to sell the car to someone in the north, a hardtop will make the sale easier. I have a wall mount and store the hardtop in my garage from late October to early May.

POST 3Original post

mine's hoisted to the ceiling in my garage. For extra security, I secured it with cargo straps from Walmart... I use mine 4 months out of the year and this way it's out of sight and easily accessible when I need it again come November.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm struck by the irony. October through April are the best top down months in Houston. Maybe I'll put it on this Summer to keep it cooler.

POST 5Original post

In the spare room, covered in its Porsche 'blanket'.

POST 6Original post

It's where it's supposed to be--hanging above the car where in about 8 minutes it can be securely on the car. It's not just winter chills that put these things on the cars. I do it during the year if we're having brushfires. That ash is very destructive. I also like the different look! If you live in Houston and keep your top down most of the year my hat's off to you! That humidity is terrible!

LOL! My wife puts up with a lot, but she refuses to allow me to store car parts in the house. She shook her head when I insisted on putting my top in the climate controlled storage unit. I have a neighbor who keeps a fully restored 1911 Harley in his dining room. (which they still use a formal dining room).

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thats pretty cool edgy. Houston humidity is only really bad about 4 months of the year. October through early December and late February through April are generally spectular for top down driving. Even the middle of winter has more mild days than cold days. June through September are the only really bad months for heat and humidity, but even then the evenings and early mornings are tolerable.

At least this car part isn't leaking oil! Since I'm rather careful with my car (and its parts) she wouldn't want the hassle of trying to explain to me how her shoes had found their way to the rear window of the hard-top.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

She's only 5' tall and 100 lbs, but I bet she could take you out. Though she be little, she be fierce.

POST 11Original post

I live in the south. If I had a car with a removable hardtop, I would use a hoist and hanger system. The hardtop would be on the car during the daytime hours (to keep it cooler and aid the air conditioning system) and off during the night time hours. But that's just me; in the real world my convertibles don't have hard tops and my Porsche is not a convertible.

POST 12Original post

Interesting....I was thinking that in AZ, etc., during the brutal summer months, it might be good to use the hardtop for better insularion.

POST 13Original post

When we were stuck in Las Vegas for 4 years, the cab top was on during the "summer" months (July-Aug)! When it's 110+ it's not terrible until you are stopped at a light. Now that we are back to the land of 4 seasons, the top is on during the winter (Dec-Jan) and then stored in an attic at home for the other 10 months.

POST 14Original post

I keep mine on a stand in the garage when not in use.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 8444241

Basement for me,how do you fit it into the attic?

POST 16Original post

We have 3 walk in attics on the top floor with full size doors for access. Very convenient.

POST 18Original post

Since I moved out to a smaller house with no garage, I keep it in my daughter's room. She is in college. Hence she only has to deal with it when she comes home for a weekend a month..... Waiting for approval from the HOA for a storage shed...

You're pretty optimistic, SSST. I lived in Houston and found there were two seasons - summer and February. I agree that the milder part of summer is in the Nov-Jan and Mar-Apr months. I'd definitely have the Hardtop on most of the season in Houston - too bloody humid for my tastes. Note, there are several former Texans living in Colorado and enjoying the heck out of our pcars. You should join us - plenty of seats still available. My setup. Note, I had a MB 560SL hoist that I modified for the 996 hardtop. The MB had a rollerstand, but it was always in the way. I use the straps because I don't trust (completely) the SS hoist wires. I'm very risk averse...

POST 20Original post

I built my own hardtop hoist on my garage ceiling from wood, pulleys and ropes, and some straps. Full DIY write up: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...top-hoist.html

Garage ceiling March-November except for track days with my home built electric lift. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...hen-150-a.html

POST 22Original post

I have been taking my hardtop on and off since I bought the car in October. I also have a lift that allows me to put it on or take it off in under ten minutes. In Seattle, you have to put down the top any time you see a glimmer of sunshine. We are now 38 days without a day of sun... I had the top down for an hour last week in 40 degree weather- I love those seat heaters!

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I may have to build me a lift just because it looks fun. I built a kayak lift using similar principles at my bay house. As for Houston weather, I've lived here my whole life so maybe I'm just acclimated. I do love CO in the Summer though.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 8443582

Man that's the coolest hoist I've seen! Very cool animated presentation as well I agree it looks like a different car with the hardtop on. I have mine installed and removed at the P. dealer, it takes 2 min. and they keep it there when it's not in use. That works out pretty good for me.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8444857

You can't possibly be married. LMAO! That's classic.

POST 27Original post

Since I live in a region with four seasons, I remove the hardtop at the same time I remove the wintertires. The hardtop is stored on a homemade stand together with the tires. If my garage had enough headroom I would also consider a hoist...

POST 28Original post

SSST, also in Texas so mine stays on a lift in the garage except for August where I stick it back on the car. Made mine for $50 worth of Depot crap including caribeaners and a piece of fencing material covered with pipe insulation for padding for the rigid piece.

POST 29Original post

I have a hoist from my BMW E36 M3 Cab (exactly like Edgy01's), but I have no hardtop. When I purchased the car the PO didn't acquire from the original owner. So I have my hoist ready to go once I find a top. BTW, anyone wanting to sell their Guards Red top in the Northeast? pm me.
