POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I pulled up to the gas pump the other day in OR and the attendent looks at me like I'm a moron. She starts to motion for me to turn the car around (so the driver's side rear fender is up at the pump), when she sees that the fuel door is right in front of the V-Power nozzle. Then she tells me in a very exasperated voice that I need to pop the filler door while I start trying to tell her / mime that you need to push down on the front. The whole thing gave me a pretty good chuckle. What's the funniest / dumbest / most clueless comment someone's said to you? Ex. A kid to his friend, while I'm stopped at another gas station: "See I told you it's not a camaro!"

POST 2Original post

someone asked me if my car was fast. My reply was it depends.

POST 3Original post

Some older lady in a Corvette followed me to my garage and then asked, "Is that a Boxster?" She then proceeded to tell me to never buy a Corvette because hers has been in the shop so much.

POST 4Original post

Most people are amazed to see that the trunk is in the front. When loading something in the trunk in a parking lot, I always get the attention of surprised people. Happens a lot.

POST 5Original post

Yesterday, in a not so nice area of town the car brakes down. Parked it along the side of a major street. While sitting in a local restaurant waiting for the tow I over heard 2 ladies talking about my car. "You know that Porsche will be stolen within the next few hours. He should have never parked along the street like that, for the hood to see" Making comment to myself... She right, now only if they could get the car to move. I might even pay them. That comment was the only one that made me laugh that day

POST 6Original post

I was getting into the car getting ready to leave the post office when this guy says, "Wow that thing must have set you back a couple hundred thousand." I just smiled and drove away.

POST 7Original post

Not really Porsche related, but my wife has a garage queen black Toyota Mr2 Spyder.....one day a couple of kids were walking past our house, and I heard one say to the other..."whoa, that's one of those new vipers"......I've had people ask if the 996 is a boxer. Most people think the carrera's are boxers.....like Mike Tyson.

POST 8Original post

people i barely know asking if they can try a spin at the wheel when they see it!

POST 9Original post

Security check point into the Rogers Center parking: rent-a-cop walks to the back of the car, taps on the side glass and tells me (with all the self-importance and attitude in the world) to pop the "trunk" so he can check in there. I pop the front hood, lean out and tell him that thats the engine in the back and he probably should look in the front. He walk to the front and as he passes my window, I hear him mutter: "...I knew that.". It took a lot of self discipline to not laugh out loud in his face.

POST 10Original post

A pimple-faced valet once said "nice Volkswagen" after I wouldn't let him drive the car. I complimented him on his mullett. Also, I'm surprised at the number of people who think a Boxster costs more (not that it matters).

POST 11Original post

It is a boxer. Boxer=horizontally opposed motor (i.e. flat 6)

POST 12Original post

The comment that I always get repeadtly is, "why dont you buy a 'vette, it has more power for less money". Then I say, becuase I dont like to drive tupperware. And then I say to myself, if you dont get it, well, you dont get it!

POST 13Original post

i got 2: 1. from my mother in law. i bot my car with hard top, so in april sunny weekend, i took the hard top out, next monday, i drove to work with top down. in the afternoon, it started rainning, my mother-in-law asked my wife:"how can he drive in the rain? he left the top at home?" 2. lending my car to friend, after she comes back, the radio button on the streeing wheel don't work right" (i have a tip)

POST 14Original post

I was driving by top down on my street, and ran across a landscaper working on a neighbour down the street. I asked him to come take a look at my house and give me some estimates on some work. He came later, and spoke to my wife...he said to her in the conversation: "That's nice white S2000 your husband has" thanks, Amir

POST 15Original post

I was loading a few groceries into the trunk when I noticed a woman (who was with her husband and kids, loading groceries into their SUV) watching me closely. I answered her unspoken question with "The engine's in the back", and she replied "There's not much room in there".

POST 16Original post

I just happened to be browsing the 996 section(I always like to stay up on all Porsche cars,I'm from the Boxster section). Some guy comes up to me after I parked, "That's a nice Fiat,I used to have one of those back in the day." He then goes on for a few more minutes to tell me how cool he Fiat was. You should have seen his face when I said "Excuse me sir,I have to go,but for future reference,it's a Porsche." His jaw dropped.....

POST 17Original post

I'm 30, but look like I'm 25. I get out of my C4S after parking on a street and an old guy walking by with a cane stops and says to me, "Nice car. I'm going to get one of them when I get old." My response was, "I said the same thing at your age, and now that I drive one, I'm young again."

POST 18Original post

From my father (hardest working man i have ever met, bar none) who passed away earlier this year (miss him alot): "why would you have to buy a car like that?" My answer: "because I could afford to do it while still taking care of my family the way you took care of me" He never asked the question again

POST 19Original post

1. From the dry cleaner, "Won't the plastic covers on your dry cleaning melt from the engine heat?" as I placed my fresh shirts in the trunk. 2. At a gas station, "Hey, does that thing have a HEMI in it?" Answer, "There are things out there that are a lot better than a HEMI". Cheers,

POST 20Original post

Well, again, not actually directed to a Porsche, but worth sharing: Many years ago, I visited an old friend from college, and was driving my relatively new BMW 530i (E34). We left the house to go to dinner, and so we all piled into my car. She says "you spent all that money on this car and you still have to shift?!?!" Michael

POST 21Original post

I know I mentioned it here, but I still think "Time to take it home to daddy" wasn't bad. She's just jealous because she was really hot. Wait, that's not how that works...

POST 24Original post

I had a similar thing happen. I am 25 and while I am sitting at the light this older guy on a nice Friday afternoon. He says "Look at that, on a nice Friday riding around with your windows down in your Porsche. Man when I grow up I want to be you!" I thought it was pretty funny.

POST 25Original post

I get a lot of those puzzled stares as well. However, it used to be even better back when I had a Boxster. On occasion I would put some stuff in the front trunk, and get the puzzled stare. Then just as they started to figure it out, I would walk around and proceed to fill up the back as well. That really messes them up. The other stares of astonishment I get are when I drive my son to (rock)band practice. He plays e-guitar and although his amp is fairly large, it fits perfectly in the front trunk of the 996 (as if it were customer made for it). People look amazed when I walk around to front of the car, and pull out what looks like an absolutely huge piece of equipment. The 996 is truly a much more practical car than 911s that preceeded it. Finally, back in early 2001 right after I bought my 964 for $23,000 a guy at a gas station pulls up in his HUGE probably $50,000 pimped out SUV and says "Man, you must be Bill Gate's son!". The thing that makes this really funny, is that I could probably sell my 964 today for that same $23K (well, if I put it back together), and he probably couldn't get $15K for that SUV. So not only did he spend a lot more than me, he lost A LOT more.

POST 26Original post

Y'know, if somebody was giving me an estimate then I'd prefer them to think I had a Honda, or better still a Corolla

POST 27Original post

Here in LA, no one give a **** about the car, but they're often fascinated watching me get in or out of it (I'm 6'6). "How do you get outta that thing?" "How do you drive that thing?" "Are your knees up to your armpits?" Climbing out of the car while on my cell in front of Subway yesterday, I kind of buckled and fell back against the roof - guy walking out of the liquor store looks at me an laughs, gets in his F-150. Hahahaha....

POST 28Original post

The best one. From my mother. Sorry to hear about your *****. She says this every time I get a new Sports car / motorcycle.

POST 29Original post

My wife went out with two of her friends a couple of weeks ago and they all met at our house before leaving. One of her friends, who owns a newer Nissan 350Z and has always loved sports cars, saw my 2000 Carrera for the fisrt time while walking past it in the garage to enter the house. Inside she commented to me "I like your car", she then turned to my wife and said "I THINK? I like it better than mine". To each his/her own but I did get a good laugh from it, while I was walking away so I couldn't be seen of course. Is it really possible to like a 350Z better than a 911 Carrera?

POST 30Original post

Best i ever got was sitting outside a coffee place, two guys walk by the car, stop and look. one turns to the other and says, "Man, thats a nice Ferrari!" .

POST 31Original post

Ha, I got that line too in West Virginia. I was at a gas station when an old lady gets out of her car and says "That's beautiful. It's a Ferrari right?" Then she ask me for a ride sometime. Maybe if she had a hot granddaughter.

POST 32Original post

Your MOTHER says that to you?!?!?!? That is hilarious!!!!

POST 33Original post

I was refueling and two kids about 10 go by on bikes real slow. One kid yells out WOW nice car. The other one says where'd you get the money? I replied "at the bank"

POST 35Original post

Good friend of mine just bought a new C4S. Picks up his mom at the airport, and she says" They aren't paying you enought to afford a car with bigger back seats? "

POST 36Original post

Some guy asked if my C4 was a "hybrid" So I said, no, but it is a "smart car"

POST 37Original post

My daily driver is a Scion xB -- you know, the tipper-over-refrigerator-looking-thing (and mine is appliance white). You can only imagine the comments/questions these things bring Too funny.

POST 38Original post

I saw an xB the other day with the tag "UGLY BOX" I think they're neat, though Then again, I also like the Honda Element styling. Go figure.

POST 39Original post

Most comments from women (by far) was from my Jaguar XJR. Comments about my Ferrari 456 are mostly "how fast does it go?" . Comments about my Porsches have been "I've never seen that one or is that custom (911 speedster) or is that real (550 spyder). I normally don't give sarcastic replies but a guy standing with his g-friend once said, "man, your an idiot for driving that beatiful Ferrari in the snow" So I replied, "at least I"m an idiot with a Ferrari"

POST 42Original post

More - had to crop the Speedster, still working on the 550.

POST 43Original post

That one came out big. Let's see this if this one of my Lotus works.

POST 44Original post

I have the Aerokit and a teener at a McD's parking lot asks, "Who makes your wing? Wings West? I didn't know they made kits for Porsches". At the border coming back from Tremblant towing the 996, the US border guard asks me to open the trunk. I get out, and open the trunk. I look around and couldn't find him. I lean over and see him waiting behind the trailer. I wave and say, "The trunk's over here". He looks at me with a blank stare, then walks my way.

POST 45Original post

Everyone I talk to seems to think that Porsches are made in Italy. "It's Italian...right?"

POST 46Original post

The thing I hate the most is when I'm finished pumping gas, "Hey do a burnout man!!" I never know what to do in that situation. Any opinions, and this happens about once a month.

POST 47Original post

My guess would be to do a burnout and then tell the officer "he made me do it!" while pointing to the person that suggested it.

POST 48Original post

I drove my Daughter to school one morning in the 993 and a teacher was walking by and commented:"man that sure beats riding the yellow bus".

POST 49Original post

My wife and I were driving back to Canada from our Florida house. We took back roads (top down) throug GA to avoid I95. We stopped in a small town ( for gas and a number of very friendly locals came over to check out car and have a chat. As it is a Canadian car, speedo goes to 300km/hr and, of course, they thought it meant that the car would go 300 mph.....first Porsche they had seen close up and I suspect the story of the 300 mph car with the motor in the rear made the rounds that day......a great fuel stop!!!

POST 50Original post

POST 51Original post

Being pulled over by a NJ State Trooper who slowly approached my car with his finger on the trigger and proceeded to ask...."Do you know how fast you were going?"

POST 52Original post

Funny thing is I get an lot of remarks as to how expensive it is (being in a small tyown) while my wifes Limitied Edition Range Rover was only $6k less at purchase. "He drive the expensive sports car while his poor wife is stuck with THE TRUCK"....

POST 53Original post

When i had my 88' turbo, i got the same thing - overrated volkswagon bug. lets test a VW turbo bug vs my 911 on a slalom.

POST 54Original post

I ususally just do em, partly because i have the mental age idential to the 12 year old asking for the burnout, but also because it makes em happy. Dumbest comment i ever got: why is the trunk in the front? some brunette at a party asked me. While i was thiknin in my head: "jesus how dumb can she be, why ISN"t it in the front, maybe cause theres no rooom in the back!!?@!?"....i realized she had nice **** and just said it was magic

POST 55Original post

With the bonnet up waiting on the wife, in a parking lot, to conclude her conversation with a friend so I could load her parcels in the front: A coverall-ed guy approaches from the back asking if I needed a hand. As they were just a couple of shopping bags, I said "Nooo. I think I can handle it." He explains as he rounds the front, looking at me, that he's a mechanic. Realizing what he meant I gestured for him to look down and told him "Well here's the problem." He laughed and said "In the back, huh?" Yeah... Also from the gang of 10 YO girls in the neighborhood, at the top of their lungs, as I drive by: "SWEET PORSH!!" Funny, the 10 YO girls new the manufacturer.

POST 56Original post

So she was overly dumb and had a nice rack...sooooo the problem is ?????

POST 57Original post

The 456 is a monster. I have some "upgrades" and it puts out over 500HP. The torque is intoxicating. The build quality is good but it's very expensive to operate. It's a big car but it just eats the miles and brakes well. To put things in perspective, the F40 goes around Fiorano only two seconds quicker than the 456 manual (the only one to buy). The 4cyl Lotus is a cheap ride that looks good and handles well, that's about as far as it goes (35 mpg??!). It's very trapped in the 80s, like me.

With my C4S I was asked at the gas station by a chick: "Is that the new cammero", guess that she read carrera as cammero. Then another time at the gas station: "Is that a GT2", I said no its just a plain *** porsche. While at the gas station with my wifes Cayenne S. "Is that german", me: yes, "wow if the little one is $120g what the big one worth?", I think to my self it not worth answering.

This morning, while filling up my car at the gas station a guy walked up to me and said "I just wanted to thank you, seeing that car made my day". I said thanks, I just bought it. He congratulated me. I wasn't expecting this kind of attention from the car. It's always been a dream of mine to have a 911 but wow, especially since there are so many in my area. Pete

At a recent car show this phrase was uttered something like 30 times. "hyuck..where's the damn engine?" and this one once: "Just a glorified VW" I had my top off sitting behind the car: "Ohhh..that's the TOP!" Finally, I had my soft top part of the way up and people thought the rear piece that moves back to let the top down into it's womb: "That's a huge wing"

POST 66Original post

[QUOTE=grant911] Thanks Grant! Although I give the nod to rennlist on that one. I heard that reply here first and that memory just hit me when the officer made the comment. The startled look on her face as I topdown burned outta there was indeed priceless!

POST 67Original post

"Where is the engine?" Got that while loading the front and rear trunks (Boxster) in a Supermarket parking lot.

POST 68Original post

i was at the south florida auto show having a great time just watching people freak out when inspecting the cayman - which was displayed with the front trunk and rear hatch open. they just couldn't figure out where the engine was.

POST 69Original post

This isn't my story, but a guy I met at an AX told me that he was in a dating phase of his life, and aside from some truck for daily driving, he had a Boxster and an older (early 80's) 911. Thinking that most women would prefer the Boxster, he generally used this for his dates. One girl he was dating, after about 4 dates -- all in the Boxster -- ended up at his residence, and when he opened the garage door to pull the Boxster in next to the 911, the girl exclaimed, "Oh my god, why didn't you tell me you had a Porsche!" Now, this is either the saddest thing you've ever heard (Boxster owner) or perhaps the most amusing thing you've ever heard (air cooled 911 purist, owner of "the last real Porsche", etc) But either way you have to admit the the comment is pretty dumb... hehe

POST 70Original post

I've been asked if it's a Camaro, Corvette, etc. Best one for me, though was at a gas station in Virginia. I pull up to the pump, and there's this woman in her 60's, bejeweled and smartly dressed, pumping gas into this giant ancient mint Caddy convertible on the other side. She watches me pull up short with the front fender in line with the pump, and raises an eyebrow as I get out. She raises the other eyebrow as I flip the lid and start pumping gas. Then, dripping with absolute disdain, she shoots me with a withering glance and snorts "I suppose the engine is in the rear, too". I guess I must be a real backward kind of guy, owning a car where nothing is where it should be.

POST 71Original post

I own a Boxster, and have had a few comments that made me laugh. Once, I pulled up to check into a hotel and opened up both the front and rear trunks. The valet asked where the engine was. Another time, when I had the front trunk opened, someone asked me if I was having engine problems.

POST 72Original post

Funniest question ever.. A valet who asked 'can I park this car for you sir?' Yeh Right! Most stupid security: San Diego Airport security after 9-11 checked the rear trunk on the Boxster but not the front..... Doh! Most annoying: Border control checkpoint going from CA to AZ on 95 - they pull me out of line to 'check my paperwork' as soon as they hear the Brit accent, then do nothing but ask me about the car for the next 5 mins!

POST 73Original post

Not quite a verbal comment, but happened when I went to get my car inspected. Give the guy the key and he gets in. After five seconds of trying to figure out where to put the key on the right hand side he looks up at me defeated. I smiled, pointed to the left side of the steering column and he says, "Oh". Then proceeds to stall it three times while I'm standing there. Awesome.

POST 81Original post

These same two things for me too. It blows people's minds to see two trunks. Same deal on the cost, there's plenty of big trucks here with lift kits, rims, mudders, exhaust systems, stereos, etc that I'm sure cost as much as my P-car.

If we're getting into my girls better than your girl, my GF of three years recently sold her R1 but still has an 84 911 euro cab and a Cayman S. She's one of the few people I let drive my racecar and she's pretty damn fast. Did I mention she's hot. Damn I'm lucky. Back on topic, my favorite comment of all time was right here on this board a couple of weeks ago explaining why a 993 was better than a 996. "Cars are best judged, like in figure skating, on technical value and on artistic impression. Everybody knows that 996 has better technical value, but 993 shines in artistic impression." What a limpdick. My 996s are frickin hockey players. Go Sioux! Jim

POST 107Original post

My kids are low key. Things get discussed, and they tell the classmates that the 996TT is big in back, comfy, and way more fun than anyone else's car. I have worked very hard to make my kids humble and quiet about the car, but I tell themif asked, they should tell the simple truth. The looks I get from the other dads in social situations (and longing comments): priceless. :-) Me, I never have said anything and generally don't mention the car. Every other guy who wants one knows (about 90% of the group I run in....). So, dumbest comment by a dad with major needs: "so your kids like it, eh?" JB

Stupid question... what is the cylinder design in these cars? It could be a hemispherical design, a "hemi". Who is the local engine guru that can answer it?

POST 109Original post

I was on a long sweeping overpass that connects two freeways. In front of me is a gravel truck, so I am purposely keeping my distance. A guy in a Camaro had to show me he could take this sweeper way faster with his vastly "better" car and passes me (on the shoulder), almost clipping the front of the car. Just as he reaches the bumper of dump truck, the truck hits the expansion joint of the overpass and the road and releases a bucket load of gravel on the guys hood and windshield. Guy pulls over to inspect the damage. As I pass him he gives me the finger, as though his stupidity was my fault. 2 seconds gained in time 2000$ for hood and windshield damage Look on the guy's face: priceless

I was in a parking lot near a beach looking for a spot to park. I see a nice spot under a big tree, put on my turn signal when some other car sees the spot as well, cuts me off and takes it. Being a nice day I did not want to start it with a shouting match, and looked for another spot. After spending the day at the beach and returning to the car we pass by that fateful spot with the same car still there when something dropping catches my eye. On closer inspection I notice that the car is parked right below this huge Pelican nest. The whole front of the car and windshield is plastered with this whitish, slimy, disgusting, Pelican droppings, like white diarrhea. Boy can these birds poop. It made my day!

Some days it seems that every teenager who has just got his license and a car wants to race against me. One day a Camaro (yes, again) started riding my bumper, with his brights on (this was day time). The road I was on has a periodic speedtrap, and so I was actually driving "normal" speeds, probably to the rage of the guy behind me. A bit further, after the potential speed trap, is one of my favorite turns and I sped up. I know exactly how to position the car, what speed, where to apex and all that and did nailed the turn. In my rear view mirror I notice that the lights from the car behind me sweep left. Sure enough, he spun out, and was facing the wrong direction in the lane we were on.

POST 114Original post

When I first got my car, I took a bunch of people out to lunch. After we came back, I showed them around the car a bit, which included the engine compartment. One of the women, whose husband drives a Z06, looks at it and says: "Hmm. Cute" Oddly enough, couple months later, another woman said exactly the same thing when I opened the engine compartment. I guess the engine compartment of a Z06, or Viper, is way more impressive than that of a 996.

POST 115Original post

On one of my 996 shopping expeditions I took my ~8 year old daughter along. When opening the trunk and the engine compartment she noticed that things were reversed (good kid!), ran back and forth a couple of times to make sure, figured that where the headlights are is probably the front, and then demanded an explanation (that's her nature). The salesman turned to her and said: "Well, maybe this is the way it should be!" Precious. Then she called her mom to tell her that dad is looking at a very strange car.

Years ago I was loading up a few bricks for the yard in my 914 1.7 at Builder's Emphorium. "Engine?" I reply. "This is a Porsche. They're extra!"

Along the lines already touched on -> I was working on my front blinker mod with the trunk open, and a guy sees me working and says "can I look in there, I've never seen a Porsche engine." He walks up, sees it's a trunk and just stares at me. I can't tell if he thinks I took it out, or if I did some serious modding to hide it. I stop my wiring task, open up the hood, and say "they put 'em back here on these." Of course, it's anticlimatic, since the engine compartment only lets you see a fraction of the engine. He looks at it, and simply walks away. -td

POST 123Original post

Why would you spend all that extra money on that when you could have a Vette for half the price, and it's faster. I get that from the muscle car guys at work, it gets old pretty quickly.

So I'm just at the store and am waiting in line at the checkout behind the owner of a speed yellow 997S cab that I've seen around town lately. He's about 55 years old wearing a gold Movado watch, gold bracelets, gold chain necklaces, basically looks like a Vette owner. I decide to tell him about Rennlist so I try and strike up a conservation. I worked at home today so I'm wearing jeans, an old baggy sweatshirt and my hair is messy. I say, "Nice 997 you have out there." Him: "It's not a 997 it's a 911." Me: "Well yes, but it's a a 997 too, you know 993, 996, 997..." Him: "No it's a 911, it was very expensive I custom ordered it." Me: "Nice, did you get the X-51 package?" Blank stare. Him: "It's very fast." Me: "I bet." I just decided to drop it. I swear if you're going to spend that much money on a car, wouldn't you read a little about it? This guy has the nicest ( besides mine ) Porsche in town and he doesn't even know WTF it is.

POST 127Original post

I just got my P-Car this weekend. I go to a very large church in Southern California. I was driving out of the church's road from the parking lot to the main street and ended up at a red in a left-turn double-lane in the front. I was on the right and there was a new model white Ford Expedition with a family in it. I was sitting at the light, then I hear a small child's voice, I wasn't really paying attention... then I heard it again louder, so glance to my left and its a nice family with the dad driving the SUV, the mom sitting in the front passenger, little girl in her car seat and a blonde haired boy with blue eyes not older than 5 years old in a kid seat. He was staring at the car with big eyes waving to me, I waved to the kids and smiled. (I'm a nice guy!) Kids wave back and smile. Then the mom rolls her window down and says: "He (pointing to her son) wants to know if thats a POR-SCHA." I respond "It sure is!" The mom says: "Yea he was asking about it because he saw the movie 'Cars'! Theres a Por-scha in it." I say: "Yea I know, its the girl-car" Mom says: "NOOOO! Its not a girl car (looking at my car)!" I said: "I mean the character is a girl." She says, "Oh yeah!" Light turns green and I wave to the kids and give them some revs, take off, and give them some nice sounds from my PSE! I hope I made that kid's day, it sure made mine! I was surprised kids even know what a Porsche is and how to say it!

POST 131Original post

Okay, this is not exactly a "Porsche comment" but I was driving my 996 Cabriolet at the time so it is somewhat on-topic... I went out to pick up a sandwhich at a Potbelly restaurant (a chain of sandwich shops, a little more upscale than Quizno's). As I was coming around the entrance to the parking lot I saw an open spot about 6 spots from the restaurant. "Perfect", I said, but as I tried to pull in, this big woman jumped in front of my car and refused to move so I can park. She kept waving at her friends in a Toyota RAV4 on the other side of the parking lot to come take the space. I tried inching up the spot to make her move but she wouldn't budge and just kept waving at her friends (all of whom were shaking their heads inside the RAV4, telling her to give me the spot.) I scanned the parking lot and saw 2 other open spots a little further down so I decided it was not worth the hassle, backed up, and took another spot and went in the restaurant. A couple minutes later I was in line to order my food when the woman walks in with her entourage. I guess she was high on adrenaline from the incident because she wouldn't shut up about it. She even started trash talking in a loud voice, making sure I can hear "I can't believe that guy in the Porsche tried to take that spot. That was MY spot." And on, and on. I usually try and avoid confrontations but this lady wouldn't shut up and I snapped. I turned around and looked her straight in the eyes and said "Lady, just because your *** is as wide as a Buick's does not mean you can park without a car!" She and all her friends heard that. Half the restaurant heard that. There was silence. I turned around and went back to the business of ordering my food. A few minutes later I hear her again, mumbling to her friends about how she couldn't believe I said that and how I was an *******. This time it didn't bother me. So, if you're out driving in Northern Virginia and a group of big, angry women riding in a RAV4 cuts you off then you know why.

Although it could have happened in any car with a speedo in kilometers, shortly after I bought a european version, '69 911S, my mother-in-law asked to go for a ride. She lived near a highway, so we pulled out smartly, but conservatively onto the highway with the rest of the traffic. As we drove along with the rest of the traffic , I could see her scanning the dash. After a minute or two, she asked, "Where's the speedometer?" I pointed it out, which was reading just a bit over 100. She got visibly pale and said, "We really need to slow down!" Just another one of those days when everyone out there is driving over 100.

I'd also gotten several "does your dad know you took his car out" in that same 944. Oddly enough, I've gotten similar comments driving my 540i sport/6 speed. I even ran time trials with that car, and often would leave the lap timer, numbers etc. on until the next wash, but I guess early 20s was too young to own an e39 5 series when those cars were almost new.

Passenger: "Why'd you pop the hood, engine trouble?" Me: "To put my jacket away, engine's in the back remember?" Passenger: "Ohhh yeaaaah... But what were you doing with the engine?" ....about 5 seconds later he gets it.

Ok, I have a couple.... 1. I'm with my wife and we're driving around a shopping center looking for a parking spot. Some guy coming from the other direction rolls down his window and... He: Wow, she's a beauty!! Me: Thanks, I just had it washed and waxed. He: I was talking about your wife!! Us: LAUGHTER! 2. So I'm at a gas pump fillling up the car and there's a 30'ish looking blonde at the other pump.... Her: Why would anyone need a car like that? Me: Well, you see, my ***** is very small and this is the only way I can feel like a real man. Her: .....speechless

POST 153Original post

Next time maybe tell her you don't need her Women do go for a wash and wax. Isn't waxing something where it pulls the hair out? Personally I'd rather make the car scream.

I was picking up a few items that I needed at a store and was beginning to put them in the trunk. An older gentleman, about 80 years old was sitting parked on the passenger side next to my car and had his door open to get some air. He says to me, "Where's the engine?" I replied, "I don't need one," as I put my stuff in the trunk and let him think about that for a few seconds...then I told him "It's a Porsche, they still have engines in the back." I was surprised that he didn't know this. He then says, "huh!" Still, he continued to look bewildered as I drove out of the parking lot.

Had a guy offer to swap cars today at the gas station. His 80's Cherokee for the 996. I asked, "straight up?". "Yup" he says. "Hmmmm, I'll think about it...."

Pumping gas (2000 C2), a nicely dressed guy gets out his car and walks up to my windshield and looks at the registration sticker. He nods his head and say "Wow, they never change these cars!". He tells me he's a Chevy dealer and when he pulled up behind me he thought my car was literally right out of the showroom.

POST 157Original post

I pull up to a 4 lane stoplight with my Targa top down, and I look up to the guy driving the semi next to me. He looks out his window, down into my car and says, "So, how do you like driving MY car??" I then hear a shout from the guy sitting in the car behind me, "Hey, that's really MY car!!" The truck driver leans out his window farther. "Yeah, you wish."

So, I'm taking a romp through the western Michigan outback with 7 of my friends from the early 911 crowd. There is a car show in the community, all american steel, so we line up along a side street, 7 Porsches between 1969 and 1973 and me in a 2004 996 Targa. Family walking across the street, the 9 year old kid amazed by all the Porsches in a row. The dad says, in a too loud whisper, "And THAT, son, is a 993." I just waved. larry

Good stories guys,... I have two of them for you. The first one happened last Monday late afternoon I was getting off of work to pump gas in the 911. I was minding my own business but always alert of any strangers or bystanders coming my way when all of a sudden a beat up old truck with a cab on it of some kind. A young adult in his mid 20's is staring at me and my 996 I'm 31 but look about 27 yells across the gas station and solicits his Home stero equipment to me while still in his truck. Long story short I said No!, he trys again I said I have to go! He must think I'm loaded and want to buy his crap. The second event is even weirder this was about 3 weeks ago at a Shell station on a weekend. I am getting gas when all of a sudden 2 pumps to the right of me this black Altima sedan is watching me to see who owns the Porsche. After I pay, I get stopped at the same gas pump by this really creapy freaky rocker guy who sure enough came out of the Altima with another dude with him. He gives me this story he has no money for gas blah, blah, etc. I check his plates it shows GA state he is lying bs me whatever. So I give him $6 (I am nice guy most of the time) bucks and then he trys to stalk me with my personal info asking for ph# where I live etc. I say none of your damn business and drive off.

I was changing my bulb in the trunk at Partsource, a guy said, where's your engine? Leaving Costco, saw a small family, father, mother and young male child, probably about 4-5 years old, he said to his father, Dad, that's a Porsche.

POST 163Original post

I visit my out of state "outlaws" very often. Most times I drive my S4 as it is a nine hour drive. We have the routine down pat. I get there, back in the drive way, pop the trunk and the father in law starts to grab bags out of the trunk. This time I drive the 996, drive straight in the drive way. Father in law meets me in the driveway and says what the heck, You normally back in. I pop the trunk and he says ... I guess you did.

POST 165Original post

We had relatives in town over the weekend. They knew I had just returned from Europe from the Porsche Driving Experience tour. My Uncle looked at my 2002 C4S and said "Did you buy this while you were over there?" I said, no... this is an older 911 - it's 8 years old. He was shocked - he thought it was new. Another quick one - a couple of years ago I was filling up with gas and a guy came over and started looking at my car. He said "Nice car... is that a 944?" And the last one actually happened in the Cayenne on Saturday. I noticed a low tire when we came out of a restaurant after dinner, so I drove to the gas station next door to use the air pump. As I got out of the car, the gas station attendant and another customer were looking at the back of the Cayenne. I heard one of them mumble something about not understanding why somebody would spend $45K on an SUV. I just smiled and didn't say anything. If only they knew what the sticker actually was for a new Cayenne...

Yesterday I pull into the girlfriends driveway around 9pm and a neighbour was outside fixing a light or halloween decorations... Anyways, I pop the hood to take some bags out and she says " isn't it a little late for maintenance work" I then told her the engine was in the back and she didn't reply after that...

about 3 years ago driving around Downtown Toronto, hooker comes up to my car and asks my buddy in the passenger seat "Is this a Corvette?"...

I pull into the gas station, and the guy next to me in the SUV asks "How much does it cost to fill that thing up?" Is it supposed to cost more for gas?

"It's a crime to drive a Porsche in the winter...you should be ashamed of yourself to ruin that car like that" Really? WTF do you drive? A Beetle no dude, YOU should be ashamed....

POST 171Original post

Basically a Porsche is a chopped and channeled Beetle with a Hi-Power kit. Don't forget who they're owned by now and how similar they really are through time. I've owned old bugs, a new beetle and a 996. Although the new beetle should have been RWD and rear engined. Damn sharing of platforms!
