My focus shifted to the front of my car, when a quick scan of the four lanes in front of me identified a State Trooper two lanes to my right, running a comfortable 60 mph.

This summer we averaed 28.3 and 31 for trips with cruise set at 75 with the top up and about 26.5 with the top down, IMHO too loud for hours on the highway unless you use ear plugs.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought I would check MPG this weekend I headed to a wedding in Portsmouth, VA - drove from Alexandria, VA (back and forth) A good portion of the drive is highway so I used cruise control quite a bit But the good news was - no tickets Luckily I did not hit traffic - left on Saturday morning and Sunday morning. I was surprised I averaged 27.5 MPG - is that common for highway driving (around 75mph - top up for most of it), I expected a bit less. I have a little over 75K miles on her and she ran great - just wished the roads were a little more entertaining. Also - I do not recommend driving in tunnels with the top down - way too loud

POST 2Original post

I usually only get around 20 the way I drive so that is pretty good!

POST 3Original post

Before my car was a track only ride... I would get 26 to 27 highway with the cruise control set at 72!

POST 4Original post

Labor day weekend I drove from central Georgia to Amelia Island, FL. I used cruise control as much as possible and kept the speed right around 75 mph. I was rewarded with 28 mpg.

POST 5Original post

I have gotten 25-26+ cruising at 75+ in cruise control. More commonly get 22-24 though, and 14-18 around time.

POST 6Original post

Around town I was more like 8 mpg.... :-) Car spent more time sideways then going forward.... My son loved it.

POST 7Original post

My trip to Tampa got me almost 26 MPG. Around town I get about 17 MPG. But once driving to the Tail of the Dragon I got 30 MPG because I was doing only about 60-65 MPH. It's unbelievable that a car with these abilities can pull those sorts of numbers.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 7999924

Now that's a fairy tale if I ever heard one. 60 - 65 on the Tail of the Dragon? Not likely. Certainly not the same Tail of the Dragon that I drove!!! When I drove it, I was driving at about 30 - 35 mph, and was turning the wheel as fast as I could lock to lock. It was exciting, but either you were dreaming about driving the Dragon, or you're totally insane. larry

POST 9Original post

Cruising hwy, relatively steady speeds, I get 28-30mpg. Overall, tend to get 21-22mpg per tank. But then again, my car isn't a real Porsche. I can't be a "real guy" if I'm getting that good a mileage. So, I must be an alien driving a TR3. Never mind.

POST 10Original post

I drove PA to NC in September and also clocked 27.5mpg. Not unusual for highway milage.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 8000088

See what happens when you don't read posts more closely? I said when I was driving TO the Tail of the Dragon. Not on it! My drive to there from Charlotte is a little over three hours. But once on the road yeah, the driving style changes and of course the speeds are much lower but a lot more exciting!

POST 12Original post

When I drove my car back from Kentucky I averaged about 70 to 75 mph and got a little over 25 MPG. I was trying to see how high I could get the MPG so it was not normal driving. I did not use the cruse much. That was with the toe way off. I had an alignment done last week among other work so I am thinking I could get it a bit better. Only have my car three weeks now it is very hard for me to drive this car in a manner that delivers good gas mileage.

POST 13Original post

I go out of my way to avoid highway driving, I would rather drive on back roads than just high speed highway driving. I average 18-20 non highway, which I think is great for any car. Best MPG was 24 with almost 200 miles of highway driving.

POST 14Original post

psuboy Give your self some time, you will slow down to more sane speed. I was the same way when I got mine.

POST 15Original post

320 miles in the mountains last weekend and 27.7 MPG. Just cruising on the highway I can easily do 32mpg. I love my car

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 8000449

Fernando. OK, you caught me!! I missed that word in your post. But driving the dragon is sure a kick, isn't it? Obviously, pictures don't do it justice. larry

POST 17Original post

Sounds reasonable... I get 19 mpg around town and 26+ on anything highway...

POST 18Original post

Mine is pretty steady at 21.3 mpg, and at that rate I'm pleased.

POST 19Original post

I typically get right around 22 for non-highway. This summer we averaed 28.3 and 31 for trips with cruise set at 75 with the top up and about 26.5 with the top down, IMHO too loud for hours on the highway unless you use ear plugs.

POST 20Original post

Ive never checked MPG.... but 27 is impressive.

POST 21Original post

WOW - you guys who are getting 18-22 for NON highway? That is insane. I do probably 1/2 highway driving and I'm happy to get 17mpg. But then again... I've also been really enjoying it

POST 22Original post

22 MPG in the city and 27 - 28 on the highway? Boy, you guys are either light-footed, or you have some high efficiency engine in your cars that is different than mine. I unashamedly am heavy footed. As an example, I was zipping down the Kennedy expressway on my way to my daughter's house this weekend. Clipping along at an even 100 mph, I watched in my rear view mirror, wary that I was going to be caught from the rear. My focus shifted to the front of my car, when a quick scan of the four lanes in front of me identified a State Trooper two lanes to my right, running a comfortable 60 mph. To say that I was gaining on him was understatement. I hit the brakes hard to keep from passing smokey, and dropped in behind him for the rest of the trip. . . . . . . Driving at speeds like that, and accelerating at "fun" levels has no doubt affected my gas mileage, I'm sure. But I have this car for the FUN QUOTIENT. If I wanted fuel economy, I would have bought a Prius. larry

POST 23Original post

POST 24Original post

Love the white faces with the aluminum bezels. Who did you buy the aluminum bezels from, and was it hard to install? Did you pull the entire instrument pod to put them on, or did you just slip them into place? larry

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 8001983

Larry - I purchased them from Pelican parts. I used double sided tape to install them - some have used silicone sealant. I did not have to remove the cluster to install them. Just make sure to use alcohol on the contact surfaces to make sure the adhesive sticks well.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you all for the info, great replies! It seems i am in line with all of you, I would guess by it that my alignment is pretty good, and the engine is running pretty well. I use my 2004 is a daily driver and I was around 19.5 MPG - I figured it would be interesting to reset it and see what it would do with mostly highway driving. My guilty pleasure is that I bring the RPMs pretty high while winding through the gears on curvy on ramps (favorite time of day). I would guess you all do. I also agree with the silver bezels on white dials - I think it was was a factory option on my car (I do not have an S): i think the code is X71

Yes the Dragon is an awesome road! The pic on the bottom right of my signature is one of the corners where the freelance photographers sit and take photos of passing cars. I've been there three times now and each time it felt like a new experience. And to top it off nearly every road in that area has some similar characteristics so just going for a drive is really rewarding. ...sure beats commuting on a daily basis which is what my car does when it's not having fun!

POST 29Original post

I don't get to drive too much these days(public transportation) so when I do, I have to make sure I keep it UNDER 14mpg or else I'm doing something wrong...

Nice! That's a very good way to put it for us performance junkies. Sums it up perfectly...
