Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I look up the book, and then see what used copies are selling for.
Leading evidence: 'Use copies are selling' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best source of information' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Use copies are selling' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
It's probably the best source of information for the 996.

Suggestion
Great book, and a nice option for someone who wants more than the owner's manual, but can't make much use of a shop manual.

Yes, you're right, he blames the Internet for providing a forum for unfettered and unjustified bashing of Porsche, and places the blame squarely on the owner for using the wrong type of oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought the 996 Essential Companion. It's a BIG BOOK, and has lots of detail in it about lots of things 996. Just wondering how many of you bought the book, and how do you use it? I don't think that this is something that you just sit down and read, even though there is a lot of interesting text in it.
Just curious. After spending $60, I'd like to know that I'm going to be getting my use out of it.
larry
Well, yeah you can sit down and read it if you are interested in the 996. Thereafter you use it as a reference to all the questions you may have and some you've not thought of.
I bought the book. It's probably the best source of information for the 996. Most any question you have regarding it will be answered here. It's full of interesting information, technical notes, specifications, and useful tips for the DIYer.
There are 5 or 6 pics of my Cab in the book. I think it helped the prospective buyer comit when I showed him the pics of my car in the book right after he drove it, lol. Now his car is in the book.
I also have the book, a must have for any 996 owner. one day or another it will pay for itself I believe. Anyways it is just a great read, tons of pictures and history. I was positively impressed by the book when I received it, I could not believe how much info was in there, and still there is a good amount of fun thing to just glance at. Only drawback, almost too big for a coffee table book.
this is a must have. It will be part of the kit when I sell my car
I think it's a good reference, especially for new owners to get to know their cars.
I bought mine in the UK from here.

I got mine from Amazon. But, I don't usually buy new books from Amazon. I look up the book, and then see what used copies are selling for. Generally there is a 20% - 50% cost savings. Plus a used book is definitely in stock!!!
I ordered mine less than a week ago, from a used book seller on Amazon's site, paid $60 for it, and received it yesterday. The book was described as being in excellent - "like new" condition. The description was pretty well on the mark. The book is very much like new, and I have it in my hands.
I just looked on their site. The used books that are available are now expensive - starting at $85. But there are a number of other sellers on Amazon's site selling the book NEW, in stock, with immediate delivery, with prices going from $59 on up. When you look up the title, look right below the description. You will see "Buy New" and then below that, see "18 new and 9 used from $$Price." Click on that, and you will see the sellers that are available.
Good Luck

It is an outstanding resource, and an interesting read.
But... Sweathers' take on IMS issues is from out of la-la land. He essentially blames the entire problem on owners not changing their oil enough. Complete defense of Porsche. And it is sort of vitriolic, out of pace with the rest of the book.
Ralph,
I did happen to read the section in the book on the IMS RMS issues. Yes, you're right, he blames the Internet for providing a forum for unfettered and unjustified bashing of Porsche, and places the blame squarely on the owner for using the wrong type of oil. (not wanting to turn this thread into a discussion of IMS RMS issues - since they are discussed ad nauseam elsewhere in this forum) I certainly feel that the "truth" if there is one, is somewhere in between. He certainly says that Porsche is unwilling to discuss their experience, numbers, causation, research, or anything relating to it.
But his comments are certainly a counterpoint to all of the other comments out there. What I do like about the book is the down to earth, non-technical language that he uses. This is obviously a book for the non-mechanic who is interested in learning everything he/she can about their 996. It's pricey, but seems to me to be a very good resource.
larry
Agreed. The book is well worth the price, particularly for a new owner. I think that in regards the IMS/RMS question it also may suffer from being written in 2006-07 when these problems was not as fully understood as they are now.
Absolutely. A lot of people at the time thought that Adrian's assessment was totally fair.
Great book, and a nice option for someone who wants more than the owner's manual, but can't make much use of a shop manual.
+1
I expected it to be detailed like a hayes manual with torque settings etc. It has a lot of info about every type of 996 ever built, but I haven't found it that helpful for projects
I'll concede that it's not a Hayes manual, but I did look up the information on Oil Changes, and it gave me detail on the size of hex that I needed, and the torque settings for the drain plug. OK, pretty simple for someone who really wrenches a lot, but for a newbie like me, that was the kind of information that I was looking for. Kind of like baby food. Easy to chew, swallow and digest.

I don't know where you're looking, but on Amazon.com, there are 2 sellers who have the book in stock and are selling it for $59.82, and $64.19, each with a $3.99 shipping charge. They are both located in the US.

I bought it and it is a great resource, especially for owners that don't have much knowledge of experience with the 996. Having been somewhat of a nut about the 996 over the 10 years I have owned mine a lot of it was redundant to the knowledge I had already developed.
The author also tend to editorialize a bit, and some of his opinions I don't agree with.
I agree - it is the book you want to read - and then refer back to as questions come up about various systems. I purchased Adrian's book on the 964 years ago and it help me understand how different that Carrera was from all that came before it. The 996 owner familiar with older AirCooled Porsche really needs this guide as Everything is changed. As for the auther... He may be opinionated - but he is a real enthusiast and offers an engineers probing look at a fantastic new direction for the 911.
Hah, yeah I've had fun at the cost of that book (pun intended) with buddies, it has such useful advice as "leave the windows open on a hot day to keep the interior from getting too hot" or something along those lines. As several people here have suggested, a lot of it is lifted literally from rennlist (as in .com), and quite a bit of it is his opinion, not to mention gross inaccuracies.
