Suggestion
No matter what its good to check the battery for crank amps by machine or do the pop jumper cables from another car on the vehicle when its heated up to see if its crank amps oriented (cells are bad).
Leading evidence: 'Install already' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'battery' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

To be sure, I installed the battery the drove like a madman for 30minutes, stopped got a coffee went to start the car and it was very slow.

Replaced my battery after the same games and no probems now.

Suspected cause
I called the dealer and they told me it's most likely the battery and that i would be better off getting one from NTB or someplace else and Porsche's batteries were only warrantied fora year.

If it's not the battery or starter, it's probably the coolant temperature sensor.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Twice in the past week after driving for 30 minutes or so I shut the car off to get gas or run into a store come out and the car cranks really slow or wont start. Wait a minute re-crank the key and it starts. The battery was low on water a couple of weeks ago, I added distilled water, its still filled.
Its weird only when the engine is hot and totally random, it happened twice. The starter just growled really slow....battery?
Its an Interstate MEGA-TRON PLUS that is a year old.
I'm having a very similar issue with mine as well. Only when the care is hot does the starter struggle. I've had the electrical system tested and have a new battery as well. No idea what's going on.
The starters on the MK1 cars seem to have this issue fairly often. I believe Suncoast parts has them on exchange for under $100.
You can check the main engine ground (by the passenger side muffler), but it's usually the starter if it's only doing it when the car's hot.
It probably would, but when replacement cost is under $100, it's not a terribly hard job, and supposedly the replacement will last even longer than the ~10 years the factory ones seem to last... I don't know that I'd bother.
You can get step by step instructions on the Renntech site. Doesn't seem to bad of a job.
i need to take my car in as my starter is doing the same thing when hot (my car is CPO'd. Otherwise I would do it myself).
Suncoast price for brand new is $714. Reconditioned price is $569 with a $389 core return if you starter is accepted by Porsche as a good core. Think i will take the one off of my neighbors car tonight and save some cash and give me some practice before I work on mine. J/K
When my starter was (
PUN ALERT!!!!
) starting to get slow on the MK1 (current owner also a member here -it'd be interesting to keep track of how long that lasts btw) I had it locally rebuilt for under $100, and I remember Dan (member here, good friend of mine) was rubbing it in my face that he spent about the same price and got one from Suncoast. I haven't checked the price since, but at the delta between the reconditioned and core being $120, that still sounds quite reasonable.
PS: I don't imagine a starter pulled from a car would be deemed unacceptable as a core.
Replaced my battery after the same games and no probems now. Watch you voltage meter can give a clue. If it drops past 10 its highly likely its the battery. Try jumping the battery with another car and see if it perks up. Mine used to take 4 or 5 trys to start then it would. Started easy when cold but after warmed up it was heck. If you have another car at home try jumping from it when you pull in and if the car starts up easy then its battery not starter. Takes some good power to kick a high compression engine over when its all primed making good compression.
If the car's harder to start warm than cold, it's probably the starter. A failing battery will generally be the other way around, provided that the charging system's working properly.
If it's not the battery or starter, it's probably the coolant temperature sensor. I know this sounds odd, but the computer needs to know the engine temp to get the fuel/air mixture right to start a hot engine.
I'm sure your right but that is not what we are reffering to. The syptom is slow almost "I'm gonna give up" cranking. I get the increased cylinder pressure of a operating temp car but it should still start with out sounding so strained.
Cold start up is quick with no issues. I believe the location of the starter and it's exposure to a dramatic amount of heat makes them crap out prematurely.
Yah mine had lost its crank amps. I can understand figuring its the alternator lacking if its hard to start when hot but batterys go that way too when hot from use ie power use. I imagine one or more cells were weak/failing on mine. I could crank it over every time cold repeatedly sitting there trying to get it to fail, but once the engine and battery got hot from use it was game over for crank amps. The better batterys have silver in them which is good for hot conditions. The engine would finally crank good after a few trys like it had the crank amps so I figure thats compression resistance aagainst a weakened battery unless somebody else has a better idea like always
No matter what its good to check the battery for crank amps by machine or do the pop jumper cables from another car on the vehicle when its heated up to see if its crank amps oriented (cells are bad). I'm also inclined to think possibly the batterys of choice are not as hardy as the porsche would like. Sure seems like a lot of extra battery room under the hood. If I were back in Germany with those bitter cold days I'd for sure have the biggest battery to fit.
I'd like to add if anyone is running a large amp don't count on the battery lasting as long as the label says.
How so? I'm curious as to what the interaction is with the sensor and the hot vs cold starting. The car spins over fine when cold or when there is a length of time between trips, like going shopping, then driving to dinner. However with a new battery, (I'm on my second Interstate battery) the problem still exisit. To be sure, I installed the battery the drove like a madman for 30minutes, stopped got a coffee went to start the car and it was very slow. Drove 15minutes like a half crazed teenager, stopped got some fuel and car barley started. This was with a new battery. Let the car cool off while I enjoyed an adult beverage and the car started just fine.
The car is at North Scottsdale Porsche right now. Yesterday they drove it on and off to get it up to temp and could not duplicate my symptom of the S L O W starter with the hot engine. The car did it to me twice this past weekend.
They drove the car and put 50 miles on it stopping several times and found nothing wrong. Its much cooler in Arizona this week, fall is finally here and the car must be running cooler.
YEP YOU'RE RIGHT. I have the car back here, they didn't charge me anything, thats good.
Got the same thing. I wish I would have brought the car to them in mid August after driving it all day. Then it would have been easy to see.
Now it's a foot race! Does the starter die before or after the CPO expires in 2/2011???
I've noticed my car does that sometimes also. It still starts on the first try, but it definitely struggles for an extra couple seconds before it finally turns over. I have yet to stall my car at a light, but I can just imagine the embarassment if I do, and then it won't start back up right away. People already assume I'm driving my boyfriend/husband's car, that would just solidify it if they also thought I couldn't drive the darn thing, lol.
I had the same issue on my 2000 Cab last summer in the month of July (particularly hot here in Austin). I called the dealer and they told me it's most likely the battery and that i would be better off getting one from NTB or someplace else and Porsche's batteries were only warrantied fora year. Rolled into NTB and had it changed and hasn't been a problem since. Check the battery first before you go off changing the starter etc.
