I installed a hitch on mine so I wouldn't be tempted to drive my jeep to tow stuff.

Suggestion
Puzzled and a little concerned about loosing more potential customers if the old timer told other people about his bad luck with the new chainsaw the owner said, "lets take a look" so they go in the back of the shop, check the chain, the oil, the gas...

Last week I brought home a complete IKEA living room set strapped to the roof of the 996 - two chairs, an ottoman and sofa in a nice green naugahyde, along with some swedish meatball mix.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My Volvo stalled on me yesterday while driving and then again this morning as I was leaving for work. I have to do a turn around Detroit to Chicago tomorrow. Would you take the 2004 C4s with 5600 mile and put another 3/4 of a year miles on it in one day, or screw around with my wife getting her mothers car and my taking her 2009 Acadia with Satellite radio.
When was the C4S last serviced? Oil change?
How old are the tires? Orginal?
Why do you have a C4S with so few miles on it?

Not sure what some of you guys are saving your cars for...the big deal about getting a Porsche for me wasn't obtaining the car, it was recognizing that I'm at a point where I can treat it just like any other car, including driving it to Detroit.
3/4 of its annual miles???
is that some sort of a sick DIET PLAN.... ought ought... no more miles for you this year
look the C4S has a fat a$$... but it wont get fatter if you drive it
Your Porsche is a depreciating asset. Its value comes from enjoying it and ownership and for most, spending time behind the wheel. This is a great opportunity for you to experience the pleasures of driving your car and spending several hours with it.
Also, I can guarantee you, that mechanically, most any and all damage that your car has sustained from new has not occured while the motor has been running.
Enjoy the drive
I agree...A couple of months ago mine was even used to transport a 30 gallon fishtank back from the pet store. Top down and all. I bought my car to drive it - even if it does get a few rock chips and dings along the way. Why save it for the next guy?
Please, Please... drive your Porsche and enjoy it.....
The pleasure of owning a Porsche is driving it, not just looking at and watching it depreciate...
FWIW
This weekend I will drive from NYC to Columbus, Ohio and back, just for fun. 1,000 miles.
Maybe I should think about renting a Prius for the 8 hour drive each way?
OK, I thought about it, and hell no. This is why I bought my car, to drive.
Shoot, I picked up 100 lbs of sand from the local lumber yard this weekend. They guys thought I was nuts... kids in the back seats, bags of sand in the front trunk!
DO NOT GET A TICKET
This does not mean ***** nilly down the hwy being a sunday driver. Scan scan scan, road gauges and surroundings to include the rear and side for your options when the lame ones do screwy stuff.
The don't get a ticket is because it is the one thing that would make your trip feel miserable. Unless its a cute hwy patrol girl you end up married to and able to alway fly that hwy for the remainder of her work days
I bought my '02 C2 January 2009 with 45,000 km and just last Saturday we, my younger son and me, managed to double the car's mileage - passed 90,000 km FINALLY!!!
To say the truth I bought the car for him, my son, and he drives it so much that I have a hard time to pry it out of his hands on occasion. He drives it to work almost daily, little sucker, and when I complain he has the audacity to point out the car is rightfully his!!
Each month it seems to run better and better. I like it especially on longer trips when we would go with my wife for 2-3 days sightseeing various locations in BC and Washington State/Oregon/Idaho driving like maniacs on the mountain roads sometimes more then 1,200 km in a day.
Marc, the C4S in question is in fact Phil's old car.
That poor car cannot get a break, it has moved from one sick owner to another. I fear that it is destined to turn to dust without ever being driven properly. No Porsche deserves the chronic lack of attention that car has had to endure.
I can hear the rubber hoses and seals corroding from here. Not only is it a depreciating asset, but one that is becoming mechanically unsound do to lack of use and lubrication. The first time that it is actually driven properly it is going to spring a RMS leak (oops, sorry, it already did that), blow the IMS (hmm, I hear that one coming), or throw a piston. The car needs putting into a crusher and out of it's misery, rather than being forced to endure the slow death that it currently has before it.
Oh the humanity.
I just drove up a ski trail with mine on Saturday. Had to do some work on the patrol shack at the top.
Sorry for the bad picture, but only had a camera phone. And yes that is a donkey in the background. You can't see the horse that was next to him.
Getting ready to drive my 04 40th Anniversary to Florida and back probably putting 3,500 miles on it. Drive it like I stole it every day. These things were built to be driven hard. I have to admit though I would keep my 993 in the garage given the same decision. Enjoy the trip. In any case these cars are not appreciating so you should enjoy it while you own it.
I drive mine to DC and back to Cary, NC fairly often. Just drove up to Maryland and back yesterday, almost 1k miles this week alone.
Oh, almost forgot, WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T DRIVE IT! IT'LL SURELY BREAK. And even if it didn't, why would you ever drive a car, jeez.
poor Hugh.. hasnt posted in a long time.. then asks a simple question and get flamed.....
serves him right
just kidding man, how's the leg? All healed up??
seriously drive the car, you might actually enjoy it - though I have my doubts
No, but that is Phil's former C4S. That poor car, it is NEVER going to be driven!
EDIT: Just read the rest of the thread (after Marc's post) and saw that Wayne already covered this.
Hey Hugh, have you gotten the dreaded "green circle thingie" to appear on the instrument cluster yet?
This thread reminds of the beer advertisement: "Its a good drinking beer"
What do you do with Beer - Drink it
What do you do with a car - Drive it
Whats so hard?
I would drive it to Chicago if:
1. Your car is a tip as there are major road construction anywhere near dowtown Chicago(if you are coming into Chicago and not suburbs). It would easily tire your left calf sitting in construction.
2. You are not one of those really **** guys worried about every rock chip. With the construction, there could be potential rock chips and potholes/uneven pavement.
But I generally tend to agree with the masses and drive it, especially if you live in detroit since we realistically have 2 more snow free months to really wring out the car.
The follow up. Yes, this is Phil's old car and by the time I got the cast off it was in winter storage. So far this year I have put over 2,000 mile on it with another month or two to go. I believe the in service date was January 2004 and from then until April/May of 2010 it had 3700 miles. Given that, I think adding 2000 so far was pretty good. As it happens to be, I got a loaner from the dealer today and did the drive in their car lol. 598 miles in 13 hours. In hind sight the roads were surprisingly good and the first thing I told my wife when I walked in the door was..... "I should have taken the Porsche". Either way was win win. The Porsche would have been fun but I'm still chuckling over the mileage I just put on their loaner in one day. By the way, I also bought another Porsche this year to keep Phil's old one company. A 1972 911T showing 115,000 miles. It's a total piece of Sh#t compared the 996 but you couldn't slap the grin off my face when I'm driving it. Three weeks ago I put 122 mile on the new "old car" in one Sunday. Hugh
I recently bought a chainsaw at a local garden center to cut up some limbs (don't ask, search for my thread) I had cut down. Dude fired up the chainsaw to show me it worked. We walked outside and the 911 was the only car in the customer lot. He just looked over at me as I placed it in the trunk and drove off.
you know this thread reminds me of a chainsaw joke... there is an old time logger who stops in a saw shop and the owner is excitied about this new invention. he shows the chainsaw to the old timer and explains how he can use it to increase his production and decrease the amount of effort. After explaining all the beefits the old timer agrees to buy one and leaves with a big smile in hopes of making life easier....
3 daays later the old timer drives up to the saw store, drives skids his truck across two parking spots and 1/2 way up on the curp, jumps ouot, slams the door.. storms to the back of his truck and lifts out the chainsaw... barges thru the front door and plops it heavily onto the counter... slams his fist down and says "I want my money back! This thing is horrible, I worked my *** off and never sweat so much, cursed it up and down, gave it a hell of an effort and het I was only able to cut about a 1/3 as much wood as I normaly cun in a day with my old hand saw....
Puzzled and a little concerned about loosing more potential customers if the old timer told other people about his bad luck with the new chainsaw the owner said, "lets take a look" so they go in the back of the shop, check the chain, the oil, the gas... all normal.....everything seems fine, he chokes it, gives it a pull and fires it up.....
the old timer jumps in surprise and yells, "HEY! What's that noise!!"
you drove a rental.........................
pics of the total piece of sh#t please
I like all the stories of all the stuff people carry in their cars. I bought my C4S to use as a daily driver. Taken it on 600 mile trips and short hops to the grocery store. My friend laughs at me because I drive the car to my beer league hockey with all the gear and sticks in the front passenger seat. Drive your car like its meant to be driven. Have fun.
I took Shadow in the 86' last weekend for a errand I needed to run... it was about a 40 minute drive each way, mostly freeway...he didnt do very well sitting in the Sparco seats because his a$$ is getting to be a little wide... but with his hiny on the seat and his front feet on the floor and his head out the window at 60... we got some looks!!
I need to clean my windshild.. lots of round nose prints
he tried a few times to sit on my lap.... talk about distracted driving !!!
I think the deciding factor for me would be the weather.
If I knew that I was driving into an area that would be covered with salt and sand on the roads...I'd probably choose a more disposable car. Anything else...I'd figure the use on the P-car would be good for it. Cruising down the hwy only requires about 12hp. Hwy miles are the easiest on a car...esp. with the engine and gearing your car has. It's not an old Fiat or English car with poor tolerances, built for 45mph.
Took my car to the track this past weekend which was about 90 miles away and got 26 MPG cruising at 78MPH. The more I drive my car the more I like it. Heck I know the car has a lot more capability than I have, but is sure is fun learning every time I get behind the wheel.
Where are the P.O.S. pics?????
Not really but that's how I play it to the neighbors looking at my second Porsche in 13 months. Lol. I love the car but it does take some patience starting it up when cold. After 5 minutes of foreplay and sweet talk it's "good to go". Restarting is fine but this 38 year old mechanical fuel injection has a few nuances. I do love this car and it's photogenic. There are no rear seat belts, is it legal to take the kids? I bought this car because it was love at first sight and these old cars have so much character and soul. That said, it ain't ever gonna drive like my 2004 C4s. I think they are complimentary to each other. Their vastly different and both great.
That's nothing!
Last week I brought home a complete IKEA living room set strapped to the roof of the 996 - two chairs, an ottoman and sofa in a nice green naugahyde, along with some swedish meatball mix.
No problems. I hit at least 120 leaving the parking lot.
Once went to a contractor only kind of lumber yard just before closing on the Friday before Memorial Day. Needless to say the employees were not too happy to assist. I needed a particular cut of wood to finish a project but it only came in 12' lengths. Good news was that I only needed a 9' section. I asked the counter guy for a tape measure and a saw and then proceeded to cut the wood at the counter while approx. 30 day workers watched and made rude comments. It was priceless to watch their jaws drop when I put the rear seats down, laid the passenger seat back and slid the lumber in.
In the mid 70's a college friend of mine drove his '72 Porsche 911 from the Phila. area (Willow Grove) with a tow hitch on the back towing a dirt bike tralier and his 250cc Husqvarna CR up to Maine so we could ride our Huskys together.
