Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

As a matter of fact, I just changed my front diff.

on the MKI's I think most of them used the allen (hex) - I can tell ya, mine was on FREEKIN' TIGHT !!

The verdict is I don't think it shifts any different than the factory fill I drained and replaced.

changing the oil on the 3.2 the drain plug spec is ~55 ft/lbs - I can assure you I stopped well short of that too - there is no way it needs to be that tight!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey folks,
I'm taking my '99 to the shop for its 60k service soon. I also want to kill two birds with one stone and do a fluid flush. What lube seems to work the best for a '99 996 6-speed?
Thanks for the quick replies. I would assume that of those listed so far, the Shell Transaxle is the easiest to get ahold of? If so, is there a proper weight, or is it a standard viscocity? And, what quantity of it should I bring my mechanic?
And, sorry for the newbie questions! I did a forum search. Really, I did!
Go to Renntech.org. If you become a member you can access a host of valuable info including how to do this DIY. As a matter of fact, I just changed my front diff. and man. trans. oil this week. I have 67K miles on mine but I love to tinker and had the time. On my '03 the fill and drain plugs take a 10mm allen wrench. Supposedly, the earlier cars take a 17mm allen and a 16mm triplesquare. The 10mm is decidedly easier to come by! Good luck with yours.
Not easy to come buy but you can get them on eBay for about $20-30. It's not only a 16mm triple square, but a SECURITY version. My spec boxster requires it. Here's a pic of what it looks like.

so tight I wondered if it was a left handed thread and did the research asking!
You know, these plugs are supposed to be torqued to the 20's (ft. lbs.) but they come from the factory @ well over 100. I nearly had a stroke breaking free the drain plug from the front diff.
I didnt say they would.... but that bastard was really on there and had me "wondering" WTF was all.... I stoped and researched before going any further
Ah, that makes more sense
I ran down to Lowe's and picked up a black iron 2" diameter 3' pipe. Slide it over my ratchet and SNAP!!!! it loosens that sucker up with a sound that will make you think the case just split open
yea, a little scary the first time.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but you have to really explain "the lines" on the 996. The lines are stock and aero.....not 1/2 stock 1/2 aero.
Take a look at the two pics and tell me that one doesn't look better than the other.
Both amazing cars, but one seems to be missing something and looks very nose heavy.
I used the Swepco 210 from

I would bleed the breaks and clutch fluid. Also if not positive with type of radiator fluid, flush the radiators with 5gal. Porsche radiator fluid.
Serpentine, walk in the park. Spark plugs a bit of work. I've done two with the exhaust on, but i would say its quicker just to take the cans off.
I thought using a synthetic in the 996 (non turbo) gearbox was a big no no... I hear the synthetic stuff is good for "other" gearboxes... but not the 996 (non turbo)
No one has chimed in about redline synthetic transaxle oil, so I will give my $.02. When I did my 60K service a month ago I also changed out the transaxle oil. I decided to use redline since I had such a great experience with it in my Alfa's transaxles. The verdict is I don't think it shifts any different than the factory fill I drained and replaced. I was hoping to improve the balky cold shifts but I really don't think it helped, or for that matter hurt. Seems the same. I also have a gallon of Swepco, and maybe when I get a chance I this summer I will give the Swepco a try.
