When I got back on the pavement, I decided to make sure the tires were clean by going back and forth in a slow but sudden left to right to left arc.

I went through the same test turning the car right to left to right in a deliberate arc (2nd gear) and voila, the thunk was still present.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got a question - the other day when I was leaving the Tale of the Dragon, I pulled off the road on to some gravel. When I got back on the pavement, I decided to make sure the tires were clean by going back and forth in a slow but sudden left to right to left arc. As I reached the limit of my turn (either to the left or the right), I felt and heard a "thunk" in the steering. Took it to my local indie, who suspected that the steering rack was gone. We (he) decided to replace the rack. Welllll, got the car back on Friday. I went through the same test turning the car right to left to right in a deliberate arc (2nd gear) and voila, the thunk was still present. Any ideas as to the cause? Still haven't heard back from the shop yet.

POST 2Original post

Tie-rod ends? Control arm joints? Upper strut mounts?

POST 3Original post

Spare tire loose in the frunk? Tool kit loose behind the spare tire in the frunk?

POST 4Original post

I don't know, but your Indy got you on that one. Let us know if he makes good for you on replacing your steering rack. How many miles?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the comments. Definitely not spare tire and we are chasing the tie rod ends, etc... And believe me, I'm on the guy making things right-especially at the price I paid. Will definitely let everyone know how it works out. Mileage is right at 26K

POST 6Original post

I can't imagine a steering rack going bad with so few miles. I've replaced one in my wife's Volvo at 112k miles, and one in a Saab SPG at 100k miles, but I would really question replacement at 26k miles . Hope it gets resolved for you.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 7602277

I had a steering rack go bad in another car in under 30K miles. The symptom was not a thunk IIRC but at least one symptom was upon making a u-turn the wheel would not return to the same place, center position, after the u-turn. The u-turn was executed several times, both to the left and right, and the diagnosis was the steering rack. It was replaced (under warranty thank goodness) and the wheel came right back to dead center every time afterwards. Sincerely, Macster.
