Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
I thought you were looking for a car to get in and drive with no work or no more work (and expense) than having to replace a transmission.
Leading evidence: 'Replace transmission' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace transmission' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

without it running / driving you might not have a way to test the rest of the car for "issues" that might add up to a lot of $$$$$

That the engine doesn't fire/run scares me though and the engine not running you have no way of determining just what works or doesn't work.

There are too many cars out there that are running with same, more or less miles on them this car has it on it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found a 996 for sale locally. I tooka look at it today and it has a hole in the trans. Is this a common problem? I was thinking that someone side stepped the clutch. Hes asking $10,000. They body is perfect and the interior is fairly clean. What do you guys think? It has 65k on the clock.
The transmissions of these cars have the same sealed bearings that the IMS has (only larger). But they are susceptible to the same problems: a lack of lubrication because the "seal" keeps out the oil.
That car clearly needs a new transmission. If you can get one for $6-8k, then the car might be a good deal. (Of course, you can't use the current transmission for a core, if it has a "bad" hole in it.)
hmmm... if you paid another 7K for a new tranny. Its still a good deal, If you are willing to do the leg work. Anything above that, I would look elsewhere.
Common symptom with a car you should run away from!
Figure at best new engine and new transmission, clutch, at least.
Get a real quote at local Porsche dealer service department for the work, then add 10% or 20% to the estimate to take care of incidentals then figure out at what price would you want to pay for the car knowing you would have to spend whatever the quote plus 10% to 20% was to get the car running.
On second thought, nevermind.
Too many risks: The exhaust system, A/C, radiators, or Ecu could be bad. Or some combination. Drivetrain or suspension might be bent. The list is endless. Essentially you could tell nothing about the car and this presents too big a risk. You can't assign a reasonable price to the car cause you can't know what it needs. It may need *everything*.
There are too many cars out there that are running with same, more or less miles on them this car has it on it. These cars are running well, well enough you can properly evaluate them, to spend any more time thinking about this car that should be in a salvage yard being stripped for parts.
Walk away.
There's always another car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Im looking for one as a project car. Ive had 928s and a 944 but neve had a 911. So I was thinking this wouldve been a good idea. Do you have something in mind?
Think the guy would take $5k for it? Or do you think he's firm on $10k. For $5k, I bet I could part a lot of it out, and have an M96 engine to take apart - just to see what's inside!
LO effing L!!!
Parting out is a good idea, as you might find out before hand that it's economical to bring it back to life. That motor might be OK afterall, who knows. Worst case you part it. Sad, but there are enough 996's out there that it's not like parting out a '70 hemi 'Cuda 'vert or somthin.
Pull everything out of it and turn it into a race/track car. Buy it for $4K and go from there, part out everythign you don't need and turn it into a track/race car.

What's a "project" car mean to you?
Depending upon your answer the car may be worth considering. Maybe.

However, the car may be a good project car. Depends again upon what you're looking for.

Macster.
If it has a cracked trans, he likely missed a shift, BAD. So you also would worry about the crank, rods etc. I would look at the car assuming BOTH are no good.
He wouldn't budge off 10k. I wanted something I could get in and drive but this seemed like a good deal. I walked away from it. The engine was definately locked up.
