I used to run 15 hubcentric up front with 7 in the rear, but am now back to direct fit all around, inspired by a move to wider fronts (8.5J).

No rubbing, but no room to run your fingers between the rear fender lips and the tires.

Question are the optimum wheel spacers front and rear to use for a stock 2001 996 18 inch wheel C2 daily driver to give the "best look" without detriment to driving?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've done multiple searches on this issue and can't seem to find enough info in one spot to draw a consistent conclusion. Question are the optimum wheel spacers front and rear to use for a stock 2001 996 18 inch wheel C2 daily driver to give the "best look" without detriment to driving? I may want to lower ths suspension later. I've heard 7mm front and 15mm rear and then the opposite...?
opposite AND some run 15's up front too...
I think if you ran a poll though you would find 15 front - 7 rear is mostly regarded as the "best" and there would be other opinions....
I think it is all personal... you decide
depends on the tires you are running as well... these are 225/40 and 285/30
Here is 15f and 7r
Here is 15mm all around
Get one pair of each (7mm & 15mm) but MAKE SURE you got the longer bolts need to fit for each size.
Then install one side 7 front and 15 rear and the other 15 front and 7 rear. Then decide what looks best to you and change the one side to match your preferred look. That way you are changing only one side a second time.
I've got 7 front and 14 rear.
Actually ivangene's backwards, but since he posted before me, apparently I fall into the "other opinions" column.
The rear is perfect, although 15 front would be great too.
...by detriment to driving i mean too much over or understeer or anything else that adversely would effect a highway vs track car. oh, and it's narrow body.
+1.
I am almost 100% certain that most people will not be able to tell a 14mm difference in the front on a street car. And on the track, 14mm wider in the front might actually help the car...

Backwards and wrong parts - at least I am consistant
I have them backwards BUT have winter tires on so I am reserving my final opinion till spring when I swap wheels/tires
Till then I just drive in reverse but since I have so many miles the DMV won't care if I remove a few
Spacer width also needs to factor in the rim width+offset and tire sizing for proper clearance.
for me-
Street- 15f 23r on 7"(55et) & 9"(55et). 225/255 tires.
AX (planned)- 15f 23r on 9"(52 et) & 10"(65et). 265/285.
Track- no spacer on 9" (46et) & 11" (63et). 255/295.
anyone recommend a good purchase source for spacers and new bolts. my wheels are OEM and tires 265x35x18 rear and 225x40x18 front...and what is "hubcentric??"
there is no lip cause the 7mm is to thin to make one. The original lip (from the wheel hub) will stick out a bit to still use.... thats prob why Porsche has 5mm instead of 7mm... so that you can still use the lip and still stick out enough from the hub without any centering issues.
I've never seen a 7mm with a lip either
I used to run 15 hubcentric up front with 7 in the rear, but am now back to direct fit all around, inspired by a move to wider fronts (8.5J). I guess I still have 5 to 7mm to play with up there, but I just don't care enough anymore to bother fitting the 7s right now. Maybe in the summer
DOH..how stupid of me! You CAN"T put a lip on it unless you machine the wheel, as the wheel will still contact the hub support. Yes, that would explain the 5mm Porsche ones, they figure the wheel is still plenty supported. About how deep is the contact lip on the hub?
I finally got around to actually measuring the spacers that came on my car.
'99 C2 coupe, lowered with GT3 springs, factory 18" Sport Classic wheels - 7.5" in the front and 9" in the rear - and 225's front and 265's rear.
Techart 15mm front and rear spacers. Fenderwells are rolled front and rear. No rubbing, but no room to run your fingers between the rear fender lips and the tires.
I had 15's on the back and nothing on the front for a while when I had stock wheels. I don't track it and occasionally drive aggressively on the street (fun runs). I didn't notice a difference in drivability. Someone told me spacers do make the insides of the tires wear even more quickly, but I don't really know if that's true.
I just put H&R springs and Bilstein Sport struts/shocks on. I have 18" turbo twists with 235's and 265's. I am planning on 15mm F/R. Do any of you know if 15mm up front w/235's will rub?
You're getting real close. I have 15mm spacers in the front with 225s on 18" twists with H&R coilovers. Car is quite slammed in the front. I don't quite rub but it's damn close. I think 235s may put you into rubbing territory.
