So my car was finally repaired and it was the brake switch that was faulty.

It took 2 trips to the dealer to figure out the ABS cylinder needed to be replaced...no problems since (4 months ago)

I just had this happen after I changed my battery.

mine came on after an alignment was done, alignment loosened and changed my rear angle slightly which caused the PSM and ABS light to come one. Once the alignment was fixed it the light went off.

Suggestion
When you first start & run the car, the battery, slightly depleted, will draw more current which will show up as a slightly higher voltage on the meter.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Just this past week my C4/3.4l had the PSM and the ABS has been lighting up. I don't mind sending it over to Porsche service to get it looked at but since they will charge a bomb for -any- kinda service, I'd just like to know if there's any basic checks I can do myself first before bringing it in?
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,
Sean
MAF sensor would be my first guess. I had those issues and that was my problem. You will get a CEL light after and it will show two codes. I forget which two but a search on renntech.org will tell you.
I would also get an OBDII reader. It only costs 40 to 60 dollars and has saved me tons of money so far. You can reset most CEL codes.
Well, my PSM and ABS light came on after my suspension install and the battery died also. I expected the worse but the Durametric stated it is only a short at one of my wheels.
Haven't check to validate.
have the lights gone off since? after maybe a couple of cycles stopping and starting the car?
had this a couple times when a wheel would leave the pavement for a moment, like on rough pavement or a driveway of some sort.
think it confuses the ABS some how.
just been my experience, the lights would go out after some moments of panic.
if they stay on for sure have it checked over.
happy motoring,
Geoff
Thx for the advice...it's been going on for a few days and I've used the car a few times and light's still there. When I first start up the engine, they're not lit up, not but after a bout a minute, they come on.
OK, I guess it's into the workshop then....
chsu74: good tip on the ODB II reader though! Looks like a good thing to have anyway.
MTB: tried that
Do they come on when you release the brake pedal? If they do, it is probably the brake light switch under the dash. You can also have someone check your brake lights to see if they are working as well when the PSM and ABS lights are on. A simple fix and the part is less than $20.
showed up on mine several weeks ago, but would go away at next start. then i noticed this past week that my battery meter on the dash started dipping a little from 14 towards, what i estimate to be, 13. looks like i might be looking at a new battery soon.
Not that you may not need a new battery, but fwiw, that's normal operation. When you first start & run the car, the battery, slightly depleted, will draw more current which will show up as a slightly higher voltage on the meter. Once the battery i scharged it will typically drop a little, to like 13.25 - 13.5. Nothing abnormal about that. If your battery (or alternator) is an issue it will usually drop to 12 V or below, even while charging
Brought my car into Porshe to check but after 30 mins they couldn't find the cause. So I'll have to book my car in next Monday for a thorough check. Hope it's not the battery 'cos it's new. I don't think it's the brake 'cos it's off when I start the car but comes on soon after and stays on for the duration of the drive - (both PSM/ABS).
What is this "MAF"?
I had the same lights come on twice, but also some vibration with hard braking. It took 2 trips to the dealer to figure out the ABS cylinder needed to be replaced...no problems since (4 months ago)
+1 on steering angle. mine came on after an alignment was done, alignment loosened and changed my rear angle slightly which caused the PSM and ABS light to come one. Once the alignment was fixed it the light went off.
The other thing is to check your brake fluid level, that could be low as well.
Only other time it came on for me was when I had it out in the snow, and the wheels were packed with snow.
So my car was finally repaired and it was the brake switch that was faulty. Cost of the brake switch approx USD$15. Cost of labour for troubleshooting/fixing $125. Isn't Japanese service "classy"
