Looks to me like not only did he use the plain 34 but he actually might have used a 34/78 which is just a touch deeper.

Suggestion
If you look at the link to my installation instructions on Renntech (which uses a plastic mounting plate), the battery is more toward the center of the plastic mounting plate, so it might actually reach if you used a non-R Optima.

Which battery of the optimas has the four holes in the base for the yellow dog/other plate AND the correct terminals. 34R? Thanks. (can you get a yellow top with the 34R size?) jeff

Yes to both. I have the 34R Red Top in my car. It looks as though the battery cables might reach even a regular (non-reversed) group 34. So if you can buy a regular 34 from a place where you can easily exchange it, you might want to give that a try.

Looking at the photo of your mounting plate, I can see why the battery cables will not reach. The battery sits way off to the right on the aluminum plate. If you look at the link to my installation instructions on Renntech (which uses a plastic mounting plate), the battery is more toward the center of the plastic mounting plate, so it might actually reach if you used a non-R Optima. Ok, so I installed the 34 Red Top today. It fit pretty well. Just drilled 2 holes in the stock pan and it went in no problem. However, if you can get a 34R it would probably be a little easier to connect the cables.
