Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

In Germany, the technical road safety of passenger cars is inspected on a regular basis and documented by a sticker on the registration plate.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect on a regular basis and documented by a sticker' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect on a regular basis and documented by a sticker' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They accumulate test data from at least 500 examples of each of 96 different models of cars and then determine the reliability as a percentage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

You may find this info re-assuring!!
TUV is a major testing agency in Germany (like UL or CSA in North America)
They accumulate test data from at least 500 examples of each of 96 different models of cars and then determine the reliability as a percentage.
They then issue a report every year. (Latest is 2007)
Out of 96 different cars, the Boxster rated 2nd highest and our 996's were 5th!!
Not bad!!

Wow. I'm amazed. (positively so!!) Like Dennis said, from the boards, you sure wouldn't think that!! This is really great news, especially for the '02 and newer crowd. #1 in 4-5 year categary..beyond not expected. My Z3 was the most reliable car I ever owned and it ranked #54. I wonder if they rate a leaky roof equal to a blown engine, tho....
It seems the data is more a measure of how well the vehicle is being maintained, at least according to the information in
this press release
:
In Germany, the technical road safety of passenger cars is inspected on a regular basis and documented by a sticker on the registration plate. If TV engineers detect major defects on a car, these defects first have to be repaired and the vehicle reinspected before a sticker is issued to the vehicle holder. TV SD AG performs roughly five million roadworthiness tests in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Saxony, Hesse and Hamburg and is thus the leader in this market, which has been liberalized since 1989. Another core business area for TV SD comprises the roughly 700,000 driving tests it holds per year.
It makes sense that a car like a Porsche would rate on the higher end (less defects) of a list generated from data gathered in a safety inspection environment as they tend to be better maintained than the average beater.
Doug that does not explain why the BMW's are so far down the list, same with Audi and the E Class Benz, although it is the favorite taxi which might explain some part, on the other hand my 2004 E 500 4matic was terrible in reliability so maybe it belongs down in 57th spot or whatever.
