Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

This means you don't get the leveling feature mandated by DOT (probably not a big deal if you adjust the lights properly) but you also don't get the HID low beams to fill in the halogen high beams, so it's not an optimal solution when you're using high beams.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are litronics on the '99-'01 996 "plug and play" (i.e. can they just be swapped with no-litronic lights without any additional wiring or control box)? I tried to search but I could not find any consensus. Has anyone done this?

POST 2Original post

Yes and no...I believe the lights themselves are plug and play, but you won't have the automatic leveling system unless you go through a bunch more work. I'm sure someone can explain it better than myself. Personally, I don't have any problems with my halogen lights--they're among the best I've had on any of my cars.

POST 3Original post

I swapped a set into my '99 and it is, as TooLoud10 indicates, sort of plug-and-play. The low and high beam lights will work but you don't have the electronics in the car to drive the mechanical controls in the headlight housings. This means you don't get the leveling feature mandated by DOT (probably not a big deal if you adjust the lights properly) but you also don't get the HID low beams to fill in the halogen high beams, so it's not an optimal solution when you're using high beams. You could always buy the electronics control module (it's part of the upgrade kit if you buy the lights from Suncoast, for example) and get the high beam functionality. But adding the leveling feature would require quite a bit more in terms of DIY. You'd need to at least add the front and rear ride height potentiometers and wiring - and possibly much more as I can't remember offhand if the module in the upgrade kit even processes those inputs.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
