Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The last few days my clutch on my '01 C2 has an odd feel to it, like it lost it's "smoothness"... meaning, when i press or release it, it sort of feels bumpy if that makes sense. I know this is a terrible description, but I'm not sure how else to characterize it... maybe uneven? It's not vibrating or chattering, so if I stop pressing halfway down it stops, but once I continue, I get that rough feel again. The engagement point seems to be more or less the same. The slower i press or release, the more pronounced it is. I can't hear any noise associated with it, and it's not slipping... am I having or am I about to have a problem? Thanks. Oh yeah, about 42k miles on the original clutch.

POST 2Original post

The exact problem just started this past weekend on my '99 C2 with 48k on the original clutch. When I release the clutch I also feel a bump or rough spot in my accelerator pedal as well as movement in the clutch pedal. I think it's time to replace it but a clutch in SoCal is about $2,500 (crazy).

POST 3Original post

Maybe the clutch pedal assist spring unit is bent out of shape, or loose, causing the pedal to feel strange?

Is that easy to check?

Check the thread "Improved Clutch action dramatically" in search (not the new one I just created yesterday). It has all the info on the spring unit, which is attached to the pedal. You have to simply remove the air vent tube, crawl up under there and check out the clutch pedal. If the spring unit looks funky, that might be your problem. Also, before you do that, does your clutch pedal work smoothly when the car is turned off? If it does, then the spring is probably not your problem. If the pedal feels strange even with the car off, I bet it's the springs fault.

Actually, no, when the car is turned off I don't feel it, so I guess it can't be the spring then.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Today it got worse... very low engagement, felt like it was about to blow. And sure enough, needs a clutch. That was fast, in a matter of days it went south...

POST 9Original post

Sorry to hear that! At least you weren't stranded on the Turnpike or something!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haha, true! But I have been before, in fact twice, in my Audi A4 Turbo when the oil pump blew up... on two different occasions!

Not fun! You have an indy mechanic, or do you use the dealer for a new clutch??
