I then took my car to an X-Pel shop where they polished the lights and custom-fitted the protectors for $150.

Since I replaced my headlights with pretty new ones I guess I have the CTT to use them on.

I have been thinking of getting a kit to clean up my headlights, does anyone recommend a particular kit (like the 3M) and do any come with the UV protection included?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hey i used one of those kits (Mother's) to polish my headlight lenses. was quite the revelation that i could unplug the whole unit and do it in the air conditioned comfort of my kitchen table. it's hot in Texas. especially in my garage. so i know now i need something to protect the plastic from further UV damage. do those custom cut clear X-Pel covers work? the ad came in the kit, and their website looks good. only $70 for a set.
I know that there's a UV protection spray that you can buy at auto parts stores. I apologize that I don't remember the name. I'd look for that.
Also, you may want to replace your HID bulbs too. I did that when I had my lenses polished, and it made a huge difference. HID lights lose intensity over time.
i had a guy around here respray the whole headlight with a special hard coat rather than a clear coat. He refinished my headlights and sprayed them for $150. seriously looks brand new. try finding a local shop that will spray a hard coat for you
How do you unplug and remove the assembly? I need to do this and have been putting it off for too long. I am going to try the 3M refinishing kit - have the kit - just need to overcome my fear. Would be a big help to work on them off of the car. Thanks
There's a special tool in your tool kit for the headlights. I believe the instructions for removing them are in the owner's manual. Basically you pull the liner out of the way, insert the tool, and turn to unlock. Then the whole assembly just slides out.
there is a great instruction page in your owner's manual. pop that rubber plug out, use the supplied tool in your tool kit and bam -- it's out, and you're inside polishing! i looked on-line for UV protectant, and looks like a super hard high heat resistant wax may be the best way to go other than having a pro do some sort of coating.

hi everyone,
first i have not used a product like this on any of my prior vehicles. i purchased a precut kit for headlamps. not sure about uv protection. kit went on perfect, diy, and still looks great (only on for 6 months though). plus with my kit if you dont like it or it has scars you can remove it. i figured it was worth a shot.
For info, my car was a garage queen since its purchase and after moving to Florida I parked it 2 month outside as I was looking for indoor parking and that was enough to see the little crack starting up.
At least I am glad that the headlight can be restored when needed.
I would really like to know if the Xpel film protect against these scratches.
The 3m kit does an O.K. job in removing yellowing but it's not aggressive enough to remove pitting. It also does not finish down as well as I would like as you will see sanding scratches. For better results I used a random orbital sander and the process described in this post

A year ago I ordered pre-cut protectors from Griot's and they were so poorly cut that I sent them back. The set they replaced them with weren't much better and I got a refund. I then took my car to an X-Pel shop where they polished the lights and custom-fitted the protectors for $150. The advantage of the custom fit is that the protectors wrap over the edges, making them completely invisible and much less likely to peel. They also supplied a small bottle of special polish to occasionally freshen up the surface of the protectors. I am happy to say that the lights are still clear with no discoloration after a year of California sun.
Once the factory UV coating is removed, the lenses will yellow even faster. Here is what I do on my clients vehicles. I dont actually polish the lenses. I wet sand them and then apply a urethane coating. I mix plain old spar urethane with equal parts of mineral spirits...50/50 mix. You dont need a lot. Simply wipe on with a blue shop towel. The mixture will level itself. The lens will be crytsal clear without need to polish anything. I have had well over a year of protection with the urethane mix without any complaints to date. You can take the lights out or tape around the paint and have it.
