This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

so if i take my center console out to paint, is the car still drivable during this time? i started thinking about this as far as the logistics of doing it myself. fellow rennlisters have given me (unfounded) courage... maybe i should start with those nasty surrounds for the seat controls. i think they are essentially the same material as the console. also how do you set that key surround out? there must be a tool for that...reminds me of an old joke.

POST 2Original post

yes, you can still drive. That's one of the best mod you can do...

POST 3Original post

I found a brand new rear center console on Ebay for $55 a few months ago. They had a bunch of them, so it may be worth doing a search. I painted it but didn't like the color, so I plan to sand it down and repaint it. I don't think I would have had the nerve to try it on the original one. I was pretty happy with the overall finish after following instructions here and on 6SpeedOnline. I was trying to match the aluminum trim, but the paint I used was too dark.

POST 4Original post

not a problem, you can drive without it. It even look good if you like the gutted out race car style

POST 5Original post

I have a Savannah Beige one that I just took out of my car to replace it with a newer one in better condition. It is the soft touch paint but has lots of scratches and scrapes. It would be perfect for reconditioning/repainting or recovering with leather or alacantra. Includes the ashtray and switch plate. $100 plus shopping.

POST 6Original post

It only takes about 6 hours start to finish, so you may not need to drive it with the console out. But you can if you need to.

Yikes! Only 6hrs? I must be way slow, as mine has been out for 2 weeks now and have put 4x's that much time into it! Think I just put my 6th and final coat of clear on tonight, and will take a look at it in the morning to see... Had fun with it, looks great and can't wait to see how it looks in the car! Highly recommended project, quite therapeutic!

The (starter)key surround is easy, grab it with your fingers and pull right out.

I didnt go for the high gloss look. I'd just ding it up. I stayed with the existing satin look.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks guys. has anyone painted those seat control surrounds? i never seem to hear about them, but mine sure look bad -- kind of one of the first things you see when you open the door. i guess it'd be the same process as a console. stephen, how many coats of base color did you apply? yikes, SIX coats of clear -- it's going to look like a rolls- royce in there! i suppose the more coats the more durable.

POST 12Original post

I did my seat control surrounds. PITA to reinstall them though. The driver's side is already dinged up again. I guess it is in a bad spot.

The key surround is easy. It pulls right out. The hazard surround is a lot tougher. I had to make a puller out of a coat hanger that grabbed the two slots on the inside of the surround. Fit the tool into the two slots and then give it a good yank straight out. Here is my result for comparison to the high gloss look....
