Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, it does note "Distance with Check Engine on :" as 0 KM.
Leading evidence: 'Check engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
For #1 this error probably arose from a battery disconnect which is a loss of power.

It also suggests the work was done by the owner since at a dealer the tech would have provided back up power to prevent this loss of power or would have cleared the error codes and reset/reapplied all of the comfort settings.

Continue to let the engine warm up at idle and when almost warmed up -- say after 10 minutes of idling -- then have the seller take you out on a test ride.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All!
I've been lurking here for a few months, soaking up as much knowledge as possible in anticipation of picking up a 996 Mk II. We've found a nice 2002 unit with 46K miles on it (1847 operating hours). Services has been consistent (manual has all dealer stamps) and the current owner just had the 45K mile service completed. He also had them run a DME printout, and the big concern, the RPM overrevs, look good:
Number of ignitions, range 1
1772
Number of ignitions, range 2
-
The only real question I had was in relation to other notes in the report:
1. In the "POSIP" section it lists the following:
Number of faults: 1
3 Power Supply
What is POSIP? I couldn't figure that out via searches here, so I'm not sure of what the indicates.
2. In the "Instrument Cluster" section, it lists the following:
Number of events: 1
2 Oil pressure too low
That somewhat concerns me, but I've also read about the oil pressure senders on these engines are somewhat flaky, so I'm not sure if that fault is truly an indicator of anything bad. What's the general concensus?
Finally, is there anything else I really want to look at in that report? There's obviously a ton of detail, but being new to these cars I'm not sure what might be important.
Thanks for all the help!
Thanks! Not sure if the fault associated with it means anything, though.
Also, looking over the report, I noticed the following. I know misfires aren't all that uncommon, but didn't know if the counts were excessively high:
Fault counter: ign. 1, misfiring during op.: 2820
Fault counter: ign. 2, misfiring during op.: 2778
Fault counter: ign. 3, misfiring during op.: 199
Fault counter: ign. 4, misfiring during op.: 387
Fault counter: ign. 5, misfiring during op.: 257
Fault counter: ign. 6, misfiring during op.: 368
Any real cause for concern?
For #1 this error probably arose from a battery disconnect which is a loss of power. Was the battery recently renewed/replaced? If so when the battery was replaced this is a loss of power. It also suggests the work was done by the owner since at a dealer the tech would have provided back up power to prevent this loss of power or would have cleared the error codes and reset/reapplied all of the comfort settings.
Or the battery was disconnected to clear error codes and extinquish the check engine light.
From the DME readout I'd want to know what Mode 1 Pid 0x21 is. This is the distance traveled while MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) activated. This is in km and the number can be between 0 and 65535. The value is reset to zero if the diagnostics info is erased (Service 4) or 40 warmup cycles without MIL being activated.
Another is Mode 1 Pid 0x30 which is the number of warm-ups since diagnostics trouble codes cleared.
Yet another of interest is Mode 1 Pid 0x31 which is distance traveled since diagnostic touble codes cleared.
Lastly, you want to experience the car quite thoroughly by at least visiting the car and with the A/C off having the engine started from cold. Be sure the CEL comes on at key on time and goes off shortly after the engine starts (along with the other warning lights: ABS, AIRBAG, PSM, etc.
Let the cold engine idle and listen to it carefully as it idles for any disturbing noises. Leave your cell phone off and pay attention to the car.
Continue to let the engine warm up at idle and when almost warmed up -- say after 10 minutes of idling -- then have the seller take you out on a test ride.
The route should cover 15 miles or so and provide the driver a chance to drive the car in a variety of ways to give the engine every chance to misbehave from hot idle to prolonged (over the span of two gears) hard acceleration from idle to redline and then upshifting to a higher gear.
If after 15 miles back at the starting point then you take the car out on the same route and drive it the same way.
In all the test should involve about 30 miles of driving.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Macster -- thanks for the replies and the advice on the test drive.
Looking at the report, I don't see any Pid values. However, it does note "Distance with Check Engine on :" as 0 KM. You can see the entire report via the URL below. I understand most of the principles, but not sure what to look for in relation to these specific engines:
