Reported cause
The issue is the inflator draws 8 Amps, and the fuse that supplies power to the cigarette lighter is a 7.5 Amp.

Suggestion
For those who had, is it valid for, lets say, check the tyre pressure when you are in a road trip?

Suggestion
This thing an 18v Makita battery is ridiculously good -- you just set the pressure you want on the backlit LCD screen, pull the trigger button once (you don't need to keep holding it), and it fills automatically and stops when it hits the pressure you set.

My brother-in-law uses Milwaukee 18v tools, so I got him a similar unit that works for Milwaukee batteries, and you'd have thought I bought him a yacht or told him how to get his VCR to stop flashing 12:00.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im pretty sure our cars came with tire inflator in the frunk. At least the C4 did. Does anyone still have theirs? I cannot find one. At least the OEM one.
My C4 didn't come with one either but I'm sure it had one at some point.
I found several on eBay. I've decided to get an aftermarket one after looking at the oem Porsche prices.
From what I understand, they only came on the C4's due to different spare tire vs. C2.
My care came with the tire inflator but I have never used it. For those who had, is it valid for, lets say, check the tyre pressure when you are in a road trip?
My 03 didn't have one. i put in one that I had laying around. I think every care should have a tire inflator. I can't tell you how many times I have had to lend my tire inflator in my daily driver to people. I also carry tire plugs, just in case.
i even carry one in my ATV and tire plugs. Have had to use both, on other people's ATV's....
Never use anything but Porsche approved air, it will lead to catastrophic failure.
Seriously though, tire plugs are a great idea. Ive had them bail me, and others out of situations on many occasions.

The C4 came with a tire inflator due to the "deflated space-saver spare", the C2 had an inflated small spare (no inflator), the 997's all have and inflator, but NO SPARE AT ALL, just a bottle of "Porsche approved fix-a-flat"
This is an old thread, but perhaps I can save someone a little grief. I am original owner and purchaser of a C4 996. It does come with a tire inflator but has no gauge. The inflator spare is to be inflated to 36psi. The inflator is a piston type air pump made by Valeo, and put in a Porsche plastic box. The issue is the inflator draws 8 Amps, and the fuse that supplies power to the cigarette lighter is a 7.5 Amp. The fuse will hold for a while, before it blows making you think you are going to successfully inflate the tire and get back on the road. Not likely. There is a spare fuse in the fuse box, but it too may well blow before full inflation. Of course you can "over fuse" with a 10 Amp if you want to risk some wiring damage. Since I was stuck along the road, I just cut off the cigarette light plug and stripped the bare wire. The unmarked wire is + by the way. I jammed the bare wire directly into the battery terminals and made it all work to get home without a 1.5 hour AAA delay. I have since learned that the Porsche remedy is to do what I did actually and the new and/or replacement inflators have alligator clips to go direct to the battery which in the 996 is readily accessible. A perhaps better solution is to get non OEM inflator that draws less than 7.5 Amps.
This is a bit off topic, but if you don't care about Porsche branding and don't want to be dependent on the cigarette lighter/battery, there are very inexpensive and very effective third-party tire pumps that work with a variety for standard 18volt battery brands. I use Makita 18-volt tools, so I ordered this $35 pump that works my existing 18v Makita batteries (

). It also comes with a 12-volt cigarette lighter plug, though I haven't tried that yet. This thing an 18v Makita battery is ridiculously good -- you just set the pressure you want on the backlit LCD screen, pull the trigger button once (you don't need to keep holding it), and it fills automatically and stops when it hits the pressure you set. It's also pretty fast for a portable unit -- maybe about half as fast as my full air compressor. It's amazing how good it works, but especially for the $35 price!!
My brother-in-law uses Milwaukee 18v tools, so I got him a similar unit that works for Milwaukee batteries, and you'd have thought I bought him a yacht or told him how to get his VCR to stop flashing 12:00. In other words, he loved it.
Thanks for the reply and information. I too am a fan of the 18v Milwaukee eco system, and recently purchased their portable 18V compressor. It does not have an 12V option however which I think would make it better. At home I have a shop compressor but when stuck on the road as I was I made the wrong assumption that the provided compressor would actually work as designed via the cigarette lighter. I now have a compressor in the car that does have a cigarette lighter plug, and draws less than the 7.5 Amp fused circuit. I may just put alligator clips on the original compressor, so I can have the genuine Porsche unit also.
