Marc is right it's easy; if you want to do it by the book, factory suggests that the two torx T30 screws should be replaced every time the wheel is out.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just ordered my new Tequipment steering wheel for the C4S. I went with the aluminum look/natural brown leather model. I'm really looking forward to getting it, not only because mine is worn out, but because I really like the look.
I've looked around on here and on renntech.org, but I didn't see an good DIY guide for steering wheel replacement. Is it a fairly easy DIY, or do I need to take it to the dealer? Can anybody point me to a DIY guide?
Thanks for the help. I'll post a pic when I have it done.
It is pretty straight forward. I've done it a few times now for my projects.
disconnect power; wait 30ish minutes
2 Torx bolts; you gain access to the air bag bolts from the back side of the steering wheel; you can turn your wheel to its side to get access to each one at a time. (Tip: use a very skinny ratchet extension so it will fix in the deep hole, or use a Torx screw driver)
slowly pull airbag out and disconnect electrical lead from wheel
use a 24mm socket to remove the nut holding the wheel to the column
slowly pull the wheel off the column, threading the airbag electrical connection though the opening while doing so
Install is opposite of removal. You will need to have the wheels straight when you pull off your old wheel, and try to thread the new wheel onto the grooved steering column at the same position.
It may take a fitment or two before you find just the right groove which keeps your steering wheel and front wheels straight on; no big deal.
Marc is right it's easy; if you want to do it by the book, factory suggests that the two torx T30 screws should be replaced every time the wheel is out. Part number for them is 999 073 183 02 and the tightening torque 8ftlb.
For the center hexagon nut tighten it to 35ftlb.

My current three spoke is natural brown leather, and it's badly worn. I can send photos if you like. I was considering having it recovered and then selling it, but I'm certainly open to other options!
One other recommendation that I'll make is to break one screw loose, then the other before removing. When reinstalling, just start one screw, then the other. On my car it was real touchy with this part, the rest was easy once I figured this out...
Thanks for the tips. I'll post a pic as soon as I do the installation. I just ordered it from Jeff at Sunset Imports today. It was the last one left in the US in NBL/aluminum. I'm hoping it arrives in time to install it this weekend.
Actually the snow is excellent. We're planning to hit the slopes on Sunday before the SuperBowl. I'm not sure the wheel will arrive in time for installation this weekend anyway - FedEx seems to be behind still from the storm earlier in the week.
Well, the steering wheel didn't arrive yet.
Even if it did... we just got 6 fresh inches of snow on top of an already excellent base. The boys and I are headed up to Keystone first thing in the morning.
Alright... the new steering wheel arrived this afternoon. I hope to get it installed in the morning. My wife needs new skis, so we're heading down the hill to do that first thing tomorrow. I then have a fly tying class at 2:30. Hopefully I'll have it installed before the class. We're skiing all day Sunday, so if I don't get it done Saturday, it will have to wait until next week. I'll post pics.
cool. Is this wheel softer, has better grip than the stock one ? That's probably the only thing I would complain about my 996 compared to more modern cars I drive... so I may think of upgrading it
I wouldn't say softer - it just feels better because the leather is new.
Yup. I arrived on Monday. I'm posting from my iPad in San Diego now.
Thanks. It's a little unusual - NBL is usually paired with wood. I'm not sure if it's aluminum. I suspect it's "aluminum look", but it feels like real aluminum. I'm really happy with it.
That wheel looks so nice!! I have a grey interior and I think it would look perfect with the aluminum!!
I had the same mats as you have also, But I just replaced them with nice cloth ones. I still can't believe how heavy those rubber ones are!!
I don't actually know what it's made of, but if it's plastic, then they have done a damn good job of imitating metal. It feels like metal, just like the metal on my shift **** and e-brake. It doesn't feel like the painted plastic on the "horseshoe" around the shifter boot. I'd swear it's metal. Maybe not pure aluminum, but it sure feels like metal.
