I'm leaning toward selling for purely financial reasons, since the depreciation and making monthly payments / insurance for a car that's not being used doesn't make a lot of sense.
Leading evidence: 'Use doesn't make a lot of sense' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace with a similar vehicle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This summer I'll be deploying to Afghanistan for most likely a year, and am wondering what the collective wisdom of the group is concerning long-term storage of a 996.
I hope to have my house rented while I'm gone, so it looks like a storage facility of some type will end up being the solution for housing the car. And since I don't have anyone to occasionally drive it, it would stay there for the duration.
The other solution would be to sell it (hopefully not taking too much of a hit on value) and replace it some time down the road.
I know that's a fairly broad question, but just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or comments.
Thanks

It would be a shame to sell.....
and prices are so low....
And having a Porsche to come back to would put a smile on your face everytime you thought about it. :-)
Few questions -
1. Do you owe any money on her?
2. How many miles?
3. Is the facility going to be safe and weather friendly?
I will honestly say depending on your answers to keep car if you really like her. Sound that you have some time to think about it as the market is a little bit soft (IMO) if you are willing to take the hit
IMHO it depends on a number of factors
- Do you owe on it? If yes, take interest and depreciation for the next year and see if the residual value is equal to or greater than what you can sell for today.
- If it's paid for then how clean is it? If well above average it may be hard to replace with a similar vehicle. Of course, with all that tax free and combat pay you could always upgrade to a 997
- Despite all the rhetoric, storing for a year if properly preserved will not hurt the car but does have a cost.... Add to interest and depreciation.
- I have stored mine for extended deployments and it always gave me something to look forward to when returning. Nothing like a spirited ride in a P-Car to bring a big smile to the face and warm the soul
And above all, be safe and keep your head down!!!
Gents, thanks for the feedback. It's most appreciated.
Yes, I still owe on the car and it currently has right at 80,000 miles. I guess one positive is no additional miles on the clock for an entire year if I decide to store it. I'm leaning toward selling for purely financial reasons, since the depreciation and making monthly payments / insurance for a car that's not being used doesn't make a lot of sense. But there's also an emotional argument for not selling my first 911 and I also have that thought in the back of my mind that I already have the car now, and who knows what priority may try to trump buying the replacement when I return.

My friend me and my friends in the ANP and ANA like your bling bling car. Please bring it with you and we will buy it from you making it worth your trouble. We look forward to your arrival and races on and off the ring road. Just a few question though my friend. Is it a cab so our friends can ride with their rpg's in the back and do you accept stolen opium for payment?
I would just store it. Your unit should have an option to use a warehouse to store it in. If you opt for the army storage available you have to be off of BAH. In the typical POV storage arrangements your car is started once every week or couple of weeks or at least once a month if you desire. I can't see any good reason to end your BAH and the $2k+ or so you get from it. If you are army ask your commander and don't be afraid to voice your concerns. If you are part of a staff group then ask around since possibly you guys have been busy doing staff officer things instead seeing everything out there. If you are another service group ask command anyway then if no luck try talking to post command since they coordinate storage. If that isn't productive get ahold of the Army base closest to you and ask their base command and see what they have for storage of vehicles. What ever you are, asking always helps. Just finding the right person to ask is all it takes.
If I go any time soon its keep the car and let somebody in the PCA drive it if nobody else is available. Maybe ask some PCA guys if they can drive it. Possibly leave the car at a dealership on consignment if thats possible.
I gather this would be your first deployment or you aren't army. Good luck learning to enjoy the simple life. If you aren't used to people trying to blow you up, don't take it personal. It's just business to them over there. It's pretty much like Chicago, New York and Detroit. stay the frick out of potholes. They pack an extra bang over there.
Of course we all hope you come back intact. Presumably, when you do come back, you'll have more money in your pocket. That might be a great time to buy a turbo or GT3... so sell the current one now.
Possibly rent it at cost to someone you trust. My buddy did that with his C55 AMG. Car was driven occassionally, insured the whole time, and payments made by someone else. Like a mini-lease.

You mention you owe on it.. are you upside down as well? These things don't sell "fast" anymore unless terribly under market price. A '01 With 80K miles, imho, is maybe what, $25K? Maybe less? and if you stress over selling it, you will certainly loose money. *if* you can afford it, then keep it. Store it properly (Fuel, tires, battery etc) and enjoy it when you return.
I would keep it...
It's going to be a struggle to sell it right before deploying and if stored correctly it should be okay when you come back. Plus what a homecoming that would be to have it waiting for you to drive again!
I'll be the first to offer it up. I have a 3 car garage and 2 cars. I will store it for free. You get it to me and I keep it safe and sound. If interested please contact me. This ain't no joke. It is the least I can do. Let me know.
What if its that franken porsche seen on craigslist hacked up to looking like a squashed honda ferrari? Could end up like the guy that drove his car off a cliff. I won't say if it is put tape on his mouth and wrists so he can't call
Sick, anyway.......I don't see no piCtures?

If it looks like this the deal is off!
All to often I have been thru airports seeing our Soldiers going off to far places. I know its easy to say but if I could do it over I would joined up right out of high school. Didn't realize then but I do now. We live in a great country. Like I said its the least I could do.
Pac996, it wasn't an issue with my last deployment since I was married at the time. Now that I'm single again (hence the ability to spend frivolously on a Porsche), I'm not leaving anyone at home that can take care of these types of things. And I'm also not in a traditional type of unit, so no warehouse to store a vehicle, rear detachment for support, or commander to help out with issues. I can store a vehicle for a fee at Ft. Belvoir, but that's in an outside storage lot -don't think so.

Pete,
Wow, that's an extremely generous offer. I'll definitely keep that in mind as a decide what I'll do, and you may get a PM sometime in the future.
-sg
ps And don't worry, it's not a FrankenPorsche.
If you are closer to Austin and decide to keep it,
I have an 8000 sq ft shop. We'll keep it for free.
We work on Boxsters and 996s so it would be among friends :-)
Will even supply a car cover for it.
Insurance for just storing it is about 20% of normal insurance cost.
let me know,
mike
Green - Best of luck on your deployment. Keep in mind that you should be able to get an upgrade upon your return, as you should be able to save some $$ while overseas. Be safe.
I have to say that I am very moved by Mike's and Pete's offers to store your car for free. Way to go guys.
Let's considerate it a standing and serious offer. Send me a PM when you figure out what you want to do. My small sacrifice pales in comparison to yours.
Regardless be safe!
POV storage is an army wide policy and no matter the command ODA or grunt you are entitled and your higher up is obligated to help accomplishing storage. You can arrange on your own if you like with a letter from your higher up or maybe even a memo you write carrying enough rank.

The bottom of this pdf has some contact numbers that might be still good. It's indoors storage and if like here its the climate controlled facility's, heated and low humidity. The file has mention of the car is washed prior to storage, stabilizer put in fuel, started and moved every 30 days and such to keep away from flat spots on tires. Even the a/c is cycled.

Good luck with what ever you go with. Post a beautiful picture after getting there.
This picture has a funny story. I pointed out we were at the wrong village since my coordinates showed the right place visible a mile away to the right of the ANA in the picture. It was our last mission stop and the boss man just said, this place is good enough. Any opium farmer is just as good as the other I guess. Except for the IED's the place is a riot for great places. Enjoy it as much as you can and play safe.
