I also just installed a cold air kit to my car this morning (no instructions included, girl power...) so I am looking forward to seeing what that sounds like on my car.
Leading evidence: 'Install cold air kit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'check engine light is not related' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check light comes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Assuming the above info is accurate and everything works as it should I suspect the check engine light is not related to the running out of gas but to the aftermarket cold air intake that was recently installed.

Suggestion
These are not expensive (on the order of $100) and come in darn handy as time goes by and the engine check light comes on.

Suggestion
I would hate to have to go through the effort of disconnecting the battery for even one of those times.

I will disconnect the negative as I do have the radio code.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I ran out of gas sitting at a red light tonight, as car started to die the engine light came on. Once I filled it up the car was fine but the light is still on...should I be worried?
You might want to change the fuel filter because you just sucked a good portion of the sediment from the bottom of your tank thru it. But if its running good without hesitations you might ok. Maybe the ECU was sensing the fuel pumping sucking air and it thru a lite. I would dis-connect the battery for a few seconds and re-connect. The CEL will go off. Make sure you have your radio code before you do.
Good Luck.
yes you (we) should be worried. Are you in high school with a Porsche?
Take the neg off the battery to reset the cel.... make sure you have the code for the radio.
+1 on disconnect battery to reset the ECU.
You likely picked up a misfire when you ran your car dry, which would trigger a CEL. If the light comes back on after resetting the ECU, get a code reader to see what is wrong or visit your friendly local indy mechanic.
No, I am not in high school, rather was actually headed to the gas station upon running out of gas. This is actually my second Porsche, had no idea that it is dangerous to let the gas tank get that low, learned a lesson there. I read where it takes 20 or so starts for the engine light to reset itself, my car does not see to be the least bit bothered by what occurred. I will disconnect the negative as I do have the radio code. I also just installed a cold air kit to my car this morning (no instructions included, girl power...) so I am looking forward to seeing what that sounds like on my car. It was a gift from a client who got me started on the Porsche thing to begin with. I appreciate all the helpful suggestions, minus the high school remark...we all have to learn the hard way here.
Thanks guys!
My girlfriend returns every single car with the gas light on. Drives me insane! I never let the cars get below 1/4 tank when I drive them. Must be a girl thing.
Supposedly the engine controller will not set a misfire error code if the fuel level is low. I do not know how low the level has to be but my recollection is if the low fuel warning light is on is the threshold.
Assuming the above info is accurate and everything works as it should I suspect the check engine light is not related to the running out of gas but to the aftermarket cold air intake that was recently installed. I suspect this is not putting cold air into the engine but hot (engine compartment air) and the error code/check engine light arises from this.
Really, unless one is prepared to make major mods the engine's intake system to relocate the air intake to a colder location (the only colder location would be say on top of the roof having an air intake scoop located there like some high performance/super cars/exotic cars have which is impractical given teh work that would needed to do this properly) one can only make the the situation worse with the installation of a cold air intake system.
I do not like the disconnecting the battery to clear error codes. It is a crude technique that subjects the car's electrical system, security system, and its very expensive engine controller electronics to possible damage.
Buy an Obd2 code reader/data viewer that will at least read/clear error codes and use this instead. These are not expensive (on the order of $100) and come in darn handy as time goes by and the engine check light comes on.
Ideally, you should read the code(s) write them down and post them here for comment and analysis.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Don't worry, she refilled it. It's just you get the end of the second tank of gas
I think I saw her name listed in the top 3 standing for the Tucson to Las Vegas run.
She likes the 60-93 shortcut since gas up is faster and the cops all know her by name and wave hello.
Change the battery following the workshop guidelines. Not hard. I've done it myself, at least once, for my Boxster, since I've owned it new in Jan of 02.
However, I've had reason to turn off the check engine light and clear the associated error codes many many times. I would hate to have to go through the effort of disconnecting the battery for even one of those times. All it takes is one misstep and damage to the car's electrical system or some other sensitive electric/electronic system possible.
Why risk it?
I have a good tire air pressure gage in the car and I carry a good OBD2 code reader/date viewer too. It doesn't take up much room and has paid for itself many many times over its cost, and I bought it years ago and paid around $250 for it.
Sincerely,
Macster.
