Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Somebody on here mentioned one time that the trans case is only good for one repair job with the bearings having to be pressed in and the case not able to handle it for a second time.
Leading evidence: 'Repair job' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair job' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What are the symptoms of your trans being bad? Generally a modern trans is quite robust and when a problem arises it's usually just a single component or a few relatively inexpensive parts that cause the problem. I've rebuilt transmissions for years, modded them to shift better, reduced shift throw travel and slop internally and a bunch of other related stuff. I've never worked on a 996 trans, but fixed my 914 one once that had a serious issue in the '70s.
Not a DIY project for everyone, but they are easy to remove and a qualified shop may be able to fix it easily and inexpensively. An exception would be that if a major component or gear broke causing several others to break, shafts bent, case cracked, etc.

Pinion bearings in these gear boxes tend to fail. Like the IMS bearing they are of the sealed type and the grease eventually leaks out. I just had mine rebuilt for this reason. Additionally my planetary gears (? correct term) were pitted for some reason although the rest of the gearbox was fine.
Additionally, this is not a DIY job as you need a significant press (30 ton?) to remove press fit bearings.
It's a six speed.
The symptom is gear noise under acceleration and deceleration. The oil looks like metal film.
It works fine to drive with in all gears, at least for now.
Here's one on the East Coast. Not sure if a C4 trans can be used in a C2 like it says, but here's the ad. I have no affiliation.

Yep... not super common, but enough that if you search on it, you will find that most people who have had transmission issues have it with the pinion bearing and the synchro in 2nd gear.
Somebody on here mentioned one time that the trans case is only good for one repair job with the bearings having to be pressed in and the case not able to handle it for a second time. Soooo maybe use bold letters
The issue isn't with the case and the bearings it is with the gears on the shaft.
The gears are press fit onto the shaft. Current thinking is that you can only press them on one more time. Time will tell.
I would be happy to help you with this. Feel free to give me a call on my cell if you do not get me here on the work number. We rebuild these all the time and would be happy to help you with this.
