Nick49 - Not sure what the exact problem is with the cam timing.
Leading evidence: 'cam timing' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cam timing' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair "dharn initiative"' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Sometimes I wonder just how many engines with a simple crack in the head were replaced rather than fixed, at a great expense to either Porsche (not so bad) or the owners.

I tend to agree it is probably the tab used for sensing the cams position.

Therefore, like many other modern vehicles, it's not a case of repair components, whether it's a computer module or an engine, it is the diagnosis that is important: the parts or unit are then replaced.

Also those that can are mainly just parts replacers and don't have the savy to subcontract work to machine shops, welders and people in the know that can work with and repair motor components.

Yes, a total rebuild would have been better, running an engine with coolant in the oil cant be good for it, but at a 10th the price I am a happy camper.

car ran, no CEL's but wasnt right and it took a team of heavy thinkiner to find that pin to be the issue...on the 3.4 I am sure there are pitfalls that might happen and the car still run w/o CEL's.....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Since I got back on the road last summer after fixing the intermix I had due to a cracked head I had put on about 3,500 miles. Took a few months to work out a few niggling problems and issues and I am still looking at the timing of the 1-3 cams, might be slightly off. But last weekend I took the first road trip since the fix. Went from the Chicago area to Athens, OH to see my daughters crew team compete in a regatta (they took 3rd place). About 450 miles each way. Car ran great, smooth and strong. No sign of oil in coolant or vice versa. Now almost 4,500 miles on the engine since the mix with a total of 55,000 miles.
So for those who might have had or will have an intermix, dont give up the faith, it can be fixed. Sometimes I wonder just how many engines with a simple crack in the head were replaced rather than fixed, at a great expense to either Porsche (not so bad) or the owners. Yes, a total rebuild would have been better, running an engine with coolant in the oil cant be good for it, but at a 10th the price I am a happy camper.
Just wondering, how could the timing be off on the 1-3 cams and still have the car perform well? Are you talking about a timing chain being a tooth off? Or something else?
I think very few Porsche dealers have techs that are qualified to rebuild motors any more. Also those that can are mainly just parts replacers and don't have the savy to subcontract work to machine shops, welders and people in the know that can work with and repair motor components. The dealerships are looking for easy money and a quick solution to resolve issues regardless of cost.
on the 3.6 rebuild I was a helper on the variocam plus was messed up on the 4-6 bank.. we diagnosed it as a problem with the 1-3, took it apart and found it to be correct.... so went to the other side and found the smoking gun....
turns out there is a little sping loaded pin inside tha cam gears on the "plus" that if installed backwards prevents the cam from advancing to the large lobes... car ran, no CEL's but wasnt right and it took a team of heavy thinkiner to find that pin to be the issue...on the 3.4 I am sure there are pitfalls that might happen and the car still run w/o CEL's..... good luck tracking it down!
I think that is simplyfying an issue that all manufacturers are facing: as the vehicles become more complex, so does the diagnosis and repair.
The franchise dealer has to make a profit based on the manufacturer's franchise agreement and warranty policy.
Therefore, like many other modern vehicles, it's not a case of repair components, whether it's a computer module or an engine, it is the diagnosis that is important: the parts or unit are then replaced.
The dealer, as with all repairers, has to offer a warranty. With cars that have known problems, the answer usually it to install the latest, updated and (hopefully) upgraded part. Again that may be a coolant cap or engine.
If the dealer carries out a warranty repair it is based on the manufacturers stated policy, NOT what the dealer wants to do.
With the car under factory or extended warranty, the cost is dealt with by the manufacturer. If out of warranty, the customer pays...and there we come down to a real issue.
With the case of the intermix, caused by cracked cylinder head, known problem, who is going to warranty a customer paid for repair?
I agree 100% with everything you stated,
unfortunately there is no simple solution here. We're no longer working on '57 Chevys. I work on the new stuff daily and long for the simple solutions of a prior era.
Nick49 - Not sure what the exact problem is with the cam timing. The car runs well but my Durametric is showing -12 degrees on the 1-3 cams. I now know that this is at the crank, so the actually error on the cams is -6 degrees. The tolerance is supposed to be 6 degrees (at the crank so 3 degrees at the cams) Possible sources of this is that when I set the cam timing by eyeball, I did not have the cam timing tool, I was off by a few degrees, that some show I missed the setting of the chain between the cams, where you are supposed to have seven links between the to marks on the cam sprockets ( I had the cams several times and could have missed by one roller putting them back in) or the tab on the intake cam that I bent and then straightened was not perfectly straightened. They only way I will determine which it is, is to do some work one of these days.
Barn996 - Yeah it is great to have the car running and running good. I don't think Marietta college was there. My daughter goes to North Park University. Other schools were Northwestern, University of Chicago, Grand Valley, Ohio State as I remember.
Got it.
If the car runs well, and you've redlined it a few times to assure yourself there are no clearance issues, valve to valve and valve to piston, I'd leave it well enough alone. A slight advance or retard on cam timing has just as much ability to help your performance for your driving style as hurt it. If your as happy as your avatar shows, leave it.
I'm really happy that your fix gives the "troubled" intermix problem a reasonable fix for the regular "Joe" (no offense).
I would like to label this head repair the "Dharn Initiative". <For all you "Lost" fans that existed before it hurt to follow the show>
I like the sound of you saying the car runs good. I tend to agree it is probably the tab used for sensing the cams position. Tough break on it having to be aligned by eye.
What portion of the durametric program did you extract the data you showed in the other thread. I found a deviation reading but not one that showed both banks.
