When looking at what's out there used, I found some as new as '05 that look like the wear and tear was much greater than my '99.

Suspected cause
The low price is suspect especially from a dealer that needs his profit.

Can anyone recommend a shop that could do a PPI in the Escondido, CA area?

My budget is about 15K and I usually use the cars as daily drivers and not garage queens.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I am a 993 owner and looking to purchase a 996. I was in one over the weekend on a rally and thought it was quite the car. I looked at prices and I guess the economy has hit pretty hard. I found this car in CA and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the dealer and/or could take a look at the car for me. I am from Cape Cod and so far Anthony at the dealer has been very helpful with pictures and information but having a set of eyes to look at it in person would be very appreciated. If the look over is positive I would look for a PPI.

Thanks in advance for any help.

My first reaction would be to find a 996 with fewer miles for a little more $, because there are so many out there to choose from. I don't mean to spend your $ for you, but I'd say you could do much better for not a whole lot more. GL
I have to be honest, I've been bitten by the 996 bug too, I've been driving 928s for 12 years now and my original motivation was the ammount of car you get for the money.
Seriously 996s are a great deal, and this wont last, more P-car fans will warm up to watercooling eventually and prices will reflect.
you've got a buyers market right now, take your time and get one that really speaks to you, don't think the one your looking at right now is the only one out there and must be bought immediatly.
my must haves are: complete service history, RMS/IMS work done, cool color, and zero accidents.

Jeff & Sam,
It's good to see that you guys are finally coming to you senses and getting a water-cooled Porsche!
Bawhahahaha!!!! Just kidding!!!
Seriously, the old adage "buy the newest car you can afford" still holds true here.
Many of us here will be more than happy to give our input and opinions about any car you become interested in purchasing. As I am sure is the case on your respective air-cooled Forums, there is a strong knowledge base here on the 996 Forum about these cars. We are here to help if you need us!
We are glad to have you here!
Good luck with your searches!
The red and amber tail lights give it away as the early '99. I used to know but since have forgotten all the reasons that the later '99s are much better and perfered. The '99 is a fine car in general and will deliver a great driving experience. It's light, torquey, has a linear powerband, mechanical cable throttle, LSD diff available, and possibly other attributes. The low price is suspect especially from a dealer that needs his profit. Some of these cars are trashed. When looking at what's out there used, I found some as new as '05 that look like the wear and tear was much greater than my '99. Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes less.
High Miles on a 996 is a blessing. The price is lower and it wasnt a garage queen. The cars have to be driven.. I would much sooner buy a NICE, well cared for 100,000 mile car than a 30K mile car. Put the savings in the bank and call it a day. Then you also have no fear of putting miles on it...... You can just drive the pants off it. Thats what I did and am doing/did.
As usual Rennlist folks are the best. As far as the car was concerned, I figured it was high and had planned on an offer in the 14K range if the car turned out OK on a PPI. My budget is about 15K and I usually use the cars as daily drivers and not garage queens. Although a 1973 Carrera RS would be very welcome in my garage (assuming I win the lottery).
I haven't heard from the dealer yet today. Asked for a Carfax, a pic of the option sticker, records availability and the engine serial number for determining if the engine has been replaced.
Thanks again for the help.
Jeff
save some coin for the car - when you get it if you dont know the service history you are looking at a few items (like the 120k mile major service) and anything found while doing it
IMO I would pop an IMS retro fit kit in the car ASAP and drive the wheels off it
well, my sled is well maintained however I only drive 10 miles each way to work but spend half of my time in Asia.....so if you come acorss, say, an '02 w/38K, assume it also might be a safe purchase
but not at $16K - that would really hurt!
Jeff: Look at what's available near here. The prices are somewhat higher. Good Luck with your search.

Yes.. My car "needed nothing" and it really didnt... I could have drive it the way i got it. But some things I had to do to it to make it 100% right. Its just the way i roll. I dropped 3K into the car before I even drove it 1000 Miles. It adds up fa-a-a-a-ast. Breaks, tires and IMS/RMS DYI. and some little odds and ends.
I appreciate all your advice and suggestions. I have done some more research and the original car I picked still looks like my best option so far. The dealer has been very forthcoming with information and I want to move forward with the car. Can anyone recommend a shop that could do a PPI in the Escondido, CA area?
Thanks again for the nice welcome to the board and I look forward to learning more.
