May be better to run a new wire then to risk melting any in the harness.

So here's the question: I was planning to run the wiring under the carpet to the engine compartment, but is there a closer 12V source?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My wife and are are planning to drive across this great land in September, and will be needing to keep our GPS, 12V cooler, cellphones, etc charged along the way. So, I purchased a neat dual socket kit which should do the trick. I had previously installed the Bird armrest/console product, and it turns out that the dual socket can be conveniently attached at the rear. So here's the question: I was planning to run the wiring under the carpet to the engine compartment, but is there a closer 12V source? Isn't the ECU back there below the carpet and could I safely hook up there? The product comes with its own inline fuse, so I don't need to be concerned about connecting to a fused circuit. Anyway, perhaps some of you may have already done this, and can offer some tips? Thanks.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For some reason, the attachments did not make the posting. Trying again....

POST 3Original post

hate to hijack a thread, but, does anyone know who makes a " plug in" multiple outlet adapter that fits ours cars?

POST 4Original post

There is a switched power source behind the bat wing area for an optional mobile phone. this would be very easy to access and then run wires under the center console to the location yo want to use.

Doug, could you explain what and where the "bat wing area" is, please?

POST 6Original post

or just tap a power source at the fusebox. here is the batwing area.... its batwing upside down

The trouble with this product, is that it sticks way out into the cabin on a 996. Also, there is a problem with the overhanging weight, and the adaptor may need support to prevent from falling out. I did not consider this to be a viable option for the 996.

POST 8Original post

I forget whether it is behind the bat wing trim piece or actually under the center/rear console, but it in there some place. You will have to remove the console to run the wire so that is where I would start. The B&M site for their short shift kit has good instructions for removing the console. I will try to find a link that shows the connector and post it here

POST 9Original post

Why not wire it right to the fuse box or behind the bat wing as was said and mount it discreetly under the dash?

POST 10Original post

I just did a homelink hack on my 2003. My car has a CD holder and an open cubby in the console. I snapped the CD holder out and there was a 4 pin connector laying there. (On mine you have to pull the top one first) I assume it is the phone hookup. The two outside wires wer power and ground. I used them to power the homelink. I do not know what amperage the phone fuse is. (Anyone?) What is the inline fuse on your duplex outlet? I think you could just tuck the wire under the edge of the console and bring it up into the area behind what ever you have in your console to get to this power source.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7548171

Just checked the inline fuse. It is 10 amps.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 7548121

This is certainly an option, but not my preferred location. Trying to avoid having a several cables coming from the dash area. The plan is to plug the GPS into to cigarette lighter socket, and plug the other stuff in at the rear of the cabin where they are out of the way.

POST 13Original post

Anyone know what amps the fuse to the phone is? What other accessories are with it if any? Rick how many amps do the acc you want to run pull? May be better to run a new wire then to risk melting any in the harness.
