Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

But is there a way to tell if the cables are adjusted perfectly?
Leading evidence: 'Adjust perfectly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust perfectly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. To adjust the shifter, do you still have to take the whole console off?

so long as the cables are hooked up, you are fine, the lever will be set by the cables....you might need to grow longer arms if you are off a huge amount, but one or 2 notches will be tough to notice.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

997 Shifter Box is 35% Shorter Throw than the 996... Thats why 997 box is worth something, because it an Upgrade for the 996's... I too paid $100 for my 997 Shifter Box
Sorry i dont know why i Typed 35%, i knew and ment 15%... my bad
I havent installed mine yet, ill have it done when my car goes in the shop for my Winters in Mid Nov
Just took the car for a spin, the new shifter is MUCH better than the stock shifter! No slop at all, more bolt action rifle like, yet not much more effort. I imagine it's between the stock shifter and a short shift kit.
Side bar: How do I know the shifter is adjusted properly? I marked the cable with a sharpie, and it wound up in the same place as the stock shifter cable ends. But is there a way to tell if the cables are adjusted perfectly?
Since it's a cable shifter, the location of the lever has no effect on the shift action, except in relation to your arm. So put it wherever it feels best for you.
If you are obsessing on it being perfectly vertical in neutral, either have someone hold it or you can get a little plastic jig that holds it perfectly centered.
I dont think the "exact" cable possition changes anything other than the possition of the shifter (ie... if you are off the actual shift handle might be slightly forward/aft, left or right of where it was)
I have the 997 assy and I think $100 is not out of line, though some people have paid much less, it is luck and timing on those type of deals. (if you buy a GT2 wing, you COULD get one for FREE!!
)
Marc, yours is 997 with SSk ? and Whitey will have a 996 he plans to mod with SSk, then swap out...mine is a stock 997 assy - so we all have differant results based on availabillity and ease of finding parts to do the swap (and money)
Part of the fun

I think so... there isnt much room thru the top to reach all the way back to the shift cable locks and securly clip them in place...BUT you can drive around without the console, make your changes, then install the comsole (I did it that way)
Thanks again to 951sickness for his spare 996 shifter console.
Before I begin, wanted to pass along some info I collected while researching a shifter replacement:
All of these shifters should be direct swaps for the 996.
996 standard shift console
996 424 010 05
152
997 *withOUT* SSK
997 424 010 00
173
997 console "GT3"
997 424 010 91
313
997 *with* SSK installed
997 424 983 00
427
I decided to go the 996 shifter + B&M SSK route, and once the console arrived today, I got it installed.
All Pictures
I think I did a pretty good job of getting it adjusted while sitting int he garage and man does it feel good.
I got to put some seat/shift time on the SSK today, and it is absolutely
perfect
.
I'm as sure as I can be that I made the perfect decision. Its shorter, more direct, but
not
notchy - just smooth; very DD friendly. What an improvement!
Wonderful! thanks for the info that you guys have been discussing. Awesome!!!!
