Suggestion
The H7 is a regular bulb to replace the low beam on non bi-xeneon headlamps.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I give in... couldn't find the right combo of keywords to search for my answer...
I'd like to change bulbs in my headlights. All of the references say that I need H7 bulbs for my MY01 C2 Cabriolet. So I bought two pair of 8000K bulbs from autolumination.com... cracked open the headlamp assembly and hmm... I pulled off the connector for the main beam bulb, and the bulb wasn't an H7, or at least it didn't look at all like the new bulbs I just bought (the new bulbs have two prongs).
By the time I got the connector off what I think should be the main beam, the bulb looked like it had a conduction element on the bottom, sort of like a regular incandescent house light bulb and the glass itself was long and tube-like... Also, there was a black box at the opening; could this be a ballast?
So - what do I have? Are these the Litronics headlamps I've been hearing about? If so, I think there's a bulb thread already floating around about it and I'll go find it.
Thanks!
Rudy
Do you have any pictures? From your 'black box' it sounds like a ballast, so HIDs. Do you know what HID lights look like when they're on? If so, you should know if you have them. Much brighter, cleaner color.
Bulb probably looks something like this:
take a picture for us....front (ooutside) and back where they plug in...and bulb too I suppose. black box sounds like PO might have done an HID mod like Maci did??
Didn't think to take the camera to the body shop (yes, she's still in there, going on 8 weeks now), I figured the bulb replacement would be as easy as it was in my truck - but... when I finally opened the assembly, I didn't recognize anything.
So these must be the HIDs - now I know what they look like. They are a whiter color than the headlights on my truck... but they didn't seem very bright, which is why I wanted to change the bulbs... Do HIDs only come in one flavor? Also, and i can't tell if it's my imagination, do they automatically level? It seems like they move up and down when I pull out of my driveway (but at 4:30 in the morning, everything seems like it's moving)...
Thanks for your help!
Rudy
As for 'flavor', i assume you mean color? If so, then no. Most cars use stock color around 4300 lumen. I personally prefer 6k, which is whiter with a slight hint of blue. Mine are aftermarket so that's what I currently run. I also run 55w instead of the more standard 35w .. needless to say theyre very bright. The 4300 lumin I believe is the best light output. As you go lower, it gets yellower, as you go up, it goes toward blue then purple.
As for auto level, I'm not sure. Someone with a 996 may have better insight on that.
If you have bi-xenon headlamps (which it sounds as if you do), the HID low beam replacement bulb is DS2. The H7 is a regular bulb to replace the low beam on non bi-xeneon headlamps. A pic of the H7 bulb is attached. Cehck your owner's manual for the correct bulbs.
Yup - I have two boxes (one pair each), brand-spanking, new, still-in-the-box, 55W 8000K H7 bulbs that look just like that. And it doesn't look like they'll do me any good, which is okay - I'm out only $25 (which is cheap in this realm).
Fortunately the headlights work, just not as well as I imagined and it doesn't sound like they can be modified to be any better.
Thanks!
Rudy
Again, I'm not sure if they aim themselves, but aiming will help. Newer bulbs might help as well, but Im not sure. Only other thing I could think of might be to go aftermarket, but factory is usually pretty good.
? Sorry, - I may be wrong, I thought you had halogens and stuck some ebay HID kit in them. The OP says he has a "box" inside the light which to me sounded like the mod you did. (or I thought you did) Real HID's have the ballast outside IIRC and its silver in color.
