Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

About a month ago my 99 carrera 996 wouldn't start due to a faulty fuel pump, it was replaced under warranty.

When I use the "non-working" key, I do get the light on the dash, radio, lights, etc work but no cranking.

Remember there are two switches up there, one of them also is the same type used for the break operation.

They're nice but a pain in the butt to clean with all those spokes.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

About a month ago my 99 carrera 996 wouldn't start due to a faulty fuel pump, it was replaced under warranty. Today it wouldn't start again but this time the engine does not even crank. Could it possibly be the starter? Battery is good for sure. Has anyone encountered this? I'm having so much fun with the Pcar but starting to get dissapointed by these faults. I never experienced this with my 99 boxster, it never had a problem. Thanks in advance

You might even try to use a jumper if it's the clutch switch (about $15.00) that has gone bad. On mine I chose to by-pass the switch only because I like to start the car without having to jump in and do it......
BTW: Are you getting any reaction when you turn the key? You have dash lights, cranking? etc....
-Eli
I had the same thing happen to me on my 99 C2 Cab. I had a bad starter. I got it replaced and THAT one failed in the same way after a couple of months.
I haven't had any problems since, but it seems to me that they have some quality problems in this area.

if you start smelling burning, STOP!!! My Boxster just did the same thing. turns out it needs a new engine, and in addition, I fried the starter trying to get it to turn over. SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS!!!
Thanks for all your response. I tried it again today with another key...and it started. It must be the transponder or code in the keys, I'll have my key reprogrammed. I don't understand how this could happen. When I use the "non-working" key, I do get the light on the dash, radio, lights, etc work but no cranking. I figured the coded keys work like those in a benz. The dealer was about to have a carrier sent, good thing I tried the other key. Oh...the stress these cars bring to us but it's all worth it. I know you all understand what i mean
Eli, what's a clutch switch? where is it located? Does anyone really depress the clutch(even though in neutral) before cranking? I thought this was only done in older models
--jose
Jose, I don't know about RoW (Rest of World) cars but most US manual transmission cars require you to depress the clutch in order to start the car -- even if you have it on neutral. It is supposedly for safety reasons (which usually means someone sued a car manufacturer in the past and lawyers decided they better add this "feature").
The clutch switch just detects whether the clutch is depressed. A tell tale sign that you have the clutch switch is if you hear a "clicking" sound when you depress the clutch.
Off topic...how are Cayenne's holding up in the Philippines? Is routine dealer service expensive? I thought about bringing one back there but the import tax is just ridiculous. If I do bring one back it is probably going to be the V6 Cayenne since the tax on the V8 or Turbo would be too much. Thanks.
Programmatore, thanks for the info I think RoWs are an exception. Regarding Cayenne's over here...they're just damn too expensive like all impoted cars as we have to pay import tax. There's just a very limited market niche for these cars. You'll be surprised though that the turbo, S models are more saleable then the base V6. It wouldn't be wise to import, as it is available in PGA sole & exclusive distributor here. the base V6 retails for about 6.0million, turbo for about 9.0M. Routine service for any porsche is relatively more expensive as compared to local cars, but still "cheaper" compared to having it serviced there. Have you ever joined the fun runs here? Let me know when you'll be over...
Wow! P9 million for a Cayenne Turbo is double the price! The base price for a Cayenne Turbo is $90,000 -- P9 million is $180,000! I guess I will need to think smaller and get a Mitsubishi or Jeep instead. Thanks for the info.
A switch that requires you to hold down the clutch thus allowing the circut to complete which inturn allows you to start your vehicle on a manual 6-speed.
This little item is located in front of the clutch pedal. Remember there are two switches up there, one of them also is the same type used for the break operation.

Hi Programmatore and Jose...nice to know that there are some kababayans who are also enthusiasts here. I live in Alexandria....maybe we can meet up sometime and talk cars
Miko
hey Miko! kamusta pare? Alexandria in Ortigas?... I bought the yellow boxster of Cong. Jules Ledesma (He also lives there with his garage queen GT3). Do you join the regular fun runs?
Hey Jose...I figured you are in Manila...I am going home for a visit next Jan for a visit. Are there places there where you can get parts for p-cars? Just curious.
Miko
miko, you can only get stuff in the locar porsche distributor...which is extremely expensive. All of us here usually get parts/aftermarket stuff in the states.

Hi Miko,
Have you been to Intersport? They're a good shop. Charlie is a good mechanic. They also have a Filipino working at the office, Kiko. Nice guys.
Anyway, I was at Intersport yesterday getting some work done and I picked up a flyer for a fun run on July 24th. Ferrari of Washington is sponsoring a track day at Summit Point and invited the (newly formed) Porsche Driving Club. It is $35 per person which includes lunch and some track time (novice group, no passing, etc.) at Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit.
You should try and go. The plan is to meet at Intersport at 8:30 AM on July 24 then take the backroads in VA and WV to get to the track. It should be a fun drive. Then there is a catered BBQ lunch then track time. $35 per person is not a bad deal for a fun run, lunch and track time! Plus, it is a good opportunity to rub shoulders with fellow Porsche enthusiasts as well as the high-rolling Ferrari owners.
The only requirement is you MUST drive your Porsche. It is part of the deal with Ferrari of Washington. Email or PM me if you need more info.
