Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I remember you posted something on Renntech about how to clean it...but I couldn't find it when I did a search...whats the best way to clean the MAF sensor?

Do I really need to change the MAS and air filter at the same time, according to the dealer, or can I change the air filter now?

After replacing MAF sensor and oil all is well since.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ever the optimist, I took my 2001 996 cab with 17K miles to my local dealer for it's "low mileage annual." Which is a way to sell you an oil change and inspection for $349. My main motivation was the fact the CEL was on. Dealer said it needed a new Mass Air Sensor and air filter, for over
$400 dollars in parts and another hour of labor which is another $120. I said thanks but no thanks. They reset the CEL and so far, it made the trip home without going on again. I read the Rennlists posts and now feel comfortable driving the car as is. But in the long run, if the MAS is bad, I would like to know: Is this as simple a replacement as I think it is? Anything I need to know? Do I really need to change the MAS and air filter at the same time, according to the dealer, or can I change the air filter now? Where in the service manual is changing the MAS covered--I can't seem to find it anywhere? Any advice on buying the MAS without having to pay full Porsche list price? Thanks. Rennlist is the next best thing to driving a Porsche!

I remember you posted something on Renntech about how to clean it...but I couldn't find it when I did a search...whats the best way to clean the MAF sensor? Is it something that should be done routinely?
I have used just about everything and they all seem to work. I have used carb cleaner, GUNK, alcohol and electrtonic spray cleaner. I clean it everytime I change the oil and normally use the electronic cleaner. I also clean it after a few days of oiling my K&N filter.
After a major service on my boxster the CEL came on a week later.
Took it back to the dealer
'oh, you need to replace the MAF'
got them to put an air hose in there and half a tree's worth of leaves came out
job done
When my MAF sensor went bad under warrenty it caused car to run rich. Later oil analysys showed fuel in the oil. After replacing MAF sensor and oil all is well since. If I ever have another problem I will defineatly try cleaning it since car is now well out of warrenty.
