I, of course, will be getting a PPI but I'm wondering what a reasonable counter offer would be assuming the PPI comes back clean or at least clean-ish.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been lurking for a looooong time on RL and am finally in a place to pull the trigger on a car. I've found a 99 996 with aero kit that is the exact color inside and out that I've been looking for. The miles are a bit high at 82k, but I can live with that. The wild cards are that the clutch and IMS fix (LN engineering) have recently been done, but the current owner is the third and he has no service records from the previous owners. He's asking $25k. I, of course, will be getting a PPI but I'm wondering what a reasonable counter offer would be assuming the PPI comes back clean or at least clean-ish. Aside from the aero kit and painted console, the car is pretty standard - no crazy options. All thoughts, comments, concerns are welcome. And thanks for your insight!

POST 2Original post

It's always hard to say as there are so many mitigating condition factors. The clutch and IMS fix are real pluses. Rather have a car with 80K and a clean IMS than 40 with uncertainty, personally. If the PPI checks out and the car is in average condition for its age, see if he'll meet you way between $20-25. If you've found one the one you were looking for -- color etc... at some point you take the leap and pull the trigger. $1-2 grand either way in the long run ain't going to make all that much difference.

POST 3Original post

The prices of pcars are coimg up and you know that there is a few thousand $ in repairs you wont need to make for a long time. If you love the car get a PPI and see what shows up. Everyone is going to have some room in their price. I would start in the low 20's.

POST 4Original post

Wow! Let me know the price you end up paying for the car. Via PM if you are uncomfortable posting it. I have 90K and just dropped the engine for a major overhaul. I would be happy like a pig in ___ if I can get low 20s for my car...

POST 5Original post

With high mileage like that I would offer $20k and stay pretty firm but that's just me.

POST 6Original post

if the car is good and you like it, has full aero kit (factory) and passes PPI - $25 for a 99' with 85k seems fair....anything cheaper is a bonus IMO

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 8827430

Respectfully I have to disagree. $25k for an 82,000 Series I 996 is full price . The car would have to be danged near perfect with lots of nice options, a flawless interior and nearly new tires and brakes. The aerokit is nice and the LN Engineering IMS Upgrade and new clutch is definitely a selling point... but I would shoot for $20-22k with 23 being tops. Having said all that, a couple of thousand one way or another is irrelevant if you get a good car and you like it. There are lots of bad choices out there. If this is a good one and the money is not that big a deal, buy it!

POST 8Original post

That's cool, my point was to allow him not to miss the dream car over a couple bucks and that the price is fair, just not smokin good, and with the "upgrades" he could afford to stretch a little and yet try to get the seller down a little and be good with it

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 8827563

+1. '02+ cars can be had in the mid 20s with less miles.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 8827724

Yup. The right car is better than the right deal. If a couple of thousand one way or another is a big issue, then Porsche ownership is probably going to be a painful experience.

POST 12Original post

$25K seems a bit high...maybe not outlandish but I'd shoot for something closer to $20-22K. I had my eyes on an '02 C4 Cab with 26K on the odometer. It, too, had a factory aero kit on it but it was obviously much newer (improved engine, interior, etc.), had much fewer miles and it was in excellent condition. It was also a cab vs. a coupe and a C4 vs. a C2. The guy wanted $33,5 which included shipping from Fla (figure about $1,500-1,800 and a broker's fee). -Eric

POST 13Original post

Glad to hear the prices are coming back up. I've had my '99 for almost five years now. 97,000 miles and doing great. OP: Coupe or cab? What color? If you get it, first mod should be Fister D mufflers. You'll thank us later!

POST 14Original post

The color you want and the car you want is worth whatever you're willing to pay for it, assuming it's not absurd. Ed's got it; the 2K won't make the difference in the long run. Since you're (a) buying a car with 80K miles already; (b) buying a car with an IMS fix, I'm going to assume you want to own it for a long, long time. The fixes that you've got plus the new clutch IMHO make the price worth it, plus your apparent enthusiasm for this specific car (if that is correct) makes it all the better price for you. Decide what you want to worry about, and in this case there's two fewer things to lose sleep over, and go for it. Sorry guys, the back and forth over a few thousand dollars gets to be silly for a new poster; he misses the car he wants because it's only worth $22,323 instead of $25,000? Going to respectfully disagree, although I will also admit I don't do this for a living, and it's only an opinion, and a non-learned one at that. For what it's worth, Excellence is putting the "high" end on a 1999 at $25,500, and the prices are slightly going up, is my understanding. So yes, the car should be spotless and in good condition, and your PPI should be clean, but of course.

POST 15Original post

we would all like the best deal when buying, and the most money when selling - but in the end getting what you want is better than missing - as it is also better than getting a deal on something you didnt want... anyone need any parts LOL

POST 16Original post

I need some pricing help/advice also! I'm looking at a 2001 996 with 27,000 miles, and I just looked up the carfax - at least 5 owners (!) and the current owner has only had it 7 months. This makes me really nervous: owner 1 - 1 year 8 months, 2098 miles owner 2 - 10 months, either 2308 or 32085 miles (inconsistent according to carfax) owner 3 - 6 months, 8285 miles (probably another owner here for 3 years) owner 4 - 1 year 11 months owner 5 - 7 months Does this seem reasonable? it is a 10 year old car.. The previous owner also said something about having a head gasket replaced (or something like that). I don't have any service history information (I'll ask for that), but was scheduling a PPI. I called the local shop for the ppi - it's where the PO takes his car. They knew the current owner's name - makes me nervous.. He wants a good price based on the low milage, but it looks to me that we should probably consider it to have around 57,000 miles or so, due to the milage inconsistency. Thanks for your opinions!!

POST 17Original post

First off, good to see another Overland Park member! My dad bought this car -- Andy's Former Car -- for $24, approximately two years ago. I think that was a hell of a deal two years ago, especially considering the suspension upgrades and wheels. Now given, it did not have LN Eng. upgraded bearing (more on that in a minute), but, my opinion is, $25 for the car you're talking about is a bit high. I agree w/ other posters. $23k seems more reasonable, with that mileage. Now, what I mentioned above about the bearing... His car now has approx. 60k miles and he and I just completed a DIY drop of the motor & tranny to have a slew of preventative maintenance items installed by -- http://docwilenracing.wordpress.com . I'm going to start another thread about this in a few days, chronicaling our re-install. This kind of info may help with your negotiations. Oh, and I highly recommend the PPI be done by Karl at the link above. BTW, here are a few links regarding some work he did: http://docwilenracing.wordpress.com/...6-engine-time/ http://docwilenracing.wordpress.com/...6-ims-upgrade/ http://docwilenracing.wordpress.com/...grade-part-ii/

POST 18Original post

WAY over priced. offer $20 and be prepared to walk away. lots of cars out there @$25K, you're getting lcose to $35K - which can get you into more car - a 997 (if you care for those) but then again, I gave my 996 away....
