Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I do know that when I was changing the oil that I cranked it up and without the cap on it, it didn't idle so well..
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tube leak or the fact the oil likes' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check "o" ring' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

while going in look for additional things, (which is why I thing the trans side is a good way to go in) check spark plug tubes (they are common leaks, the second pic looks pretty far back (likely a tube leak or the fact the oil likes to weep aft on cars) those cam solenoid seals and even the oil filler tube.

Suggestion
As Steve and Ferd said, the froth can be from short trips - but with the addition of the leaking I would replace the AOS without question (there are ways to test it) (also good point to check the coolant)

- Check for extreme suction pressure when removing the oi cap.

clean all the areas and then watch where the new leak (s) come from, chances re if it just started you might have a single leak, but if you dont know you could have multiple - the AOS is still my highest suspect part

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie 911 996 owner and have a concern so pardon the lack of knowledge on these cars. I was changing the oil and noticed that each side of the engine had oil that has leaked on it. It appears to be at the surface where the heads match the block. It's not a lot of oil but there is some there. My question is how concerned should I be?
Any help is appreciated.
PS if you have it done at a shop there are two ways of doing it, from the back, or pull the transmission. if you have a little extra $ there are benefits to going in thru the transmission side
and the actual AOS time is nearly the same so its a "while you're in there" list
lemme know if you want to know more, we all would be happy to help...
post some specs on the car and maybe a pic too when you get a minute - BTW
WELCOME
does your expansion tank have the same froth? if so, you have intermix. If not, check "O" ring on cap . AOS (most likely), spark plug tubes, cam solenoid, head seal.... all can cause this.
That accumulated residue in the oil filler neck sure looks like short drives without burning off moisture in the engine. Lots of reasons for the oil leaks as mentioned. Time to start tracking the cause.

That mess on the bottom coould be something inside the bell housing (rms or case bolt, even ims seal) -
how fast is it dripping out?

Thank you all for the input / info, another individual told me the same thing about short trips and not getting the engine up to temp for a long time. The car was purchased from a guy who said he didn't drive it but on selective weekends. It's a 1999 with 49K miles. Also, trips from my home to work are very short, approximately 5-6 miles with 20-30 mins of run time. This is my daily driver when the motorcycle can't be ridden.
Again, thanks for all the information. A cleaning on the bottom side is going to happen very soon.
If I remember well, you can diagnose the AOS failure via:
- Remove the throttle body and check for oil in there
- Check for extreme suction pressure when removing the oi cap.
if you commute 5-6 miles I suggest changing oil every 1000-1500 miles - seriously!
so it is possible the oil leak and the froth are not related since you commute such a short distance...
I do know that when I changed the oil that I left the cap off to see/listen/feel and the car didn't idle very well.. Is that a tell-tell sign of the AOS?
