Soft top is a consumable item - replace when wore, use often as they wear out rather you use them or not

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys -
Quick question; after the recent blizzards that have hit the east coast -- I want to ask current owners. I am looking to get a Cabriolet 996; but I dont have a garrage in my house and after clearing 20 inches of snow off my X5 yesterday it got me nervous.
Can I realistically own a Cabriolet in Connecticut if I dont have a garage? I am nervous that those huge storms could wreck the soft top. Any current owners have thoughts on this topic?
Thanks in advance!
Hmmm... I don't think that I would buy a cab unless I had a garage or the hardtop. Cabs really don't like to be left out in the weather- they get saturated and never really dry out. If you have the hardtop and a cover, that would be better. 20 inches of snow is a lot for any car, regardless.
do you use a quality car cover and / or maintain the cab top with chemicals? Just a matter if you will be incurring early wear and consider the top to be a replaceable item.
don't forget to keep the mulitple drain tubes in working order.... not good in a heavy downpour.....ask my co-worker
Even if the cab you are looking at does not have a hard top, they are easy to find. I bought mine 8 months after I got my cab in the color I needed for $600.
I wasn't looking for one at the time, it just popped up in the right color, so I bought it.
I have read recently that someone here bought one on ebay for $200.
Cab + hard top = everything!
LOL @ $200 hardtop
there is a guy in Seattle asking $2500 for one on craigslist

I own 3 different Cabrios and I would say Hardtops are the best option, but not a necessity. If you maintain the top properly it will do well. Top cleaners and protectants must be used on a regular basis to keep the fabric in good shape. Additionally, once the snow stops, I would clean it off as quickly as possible.
Given these general guidelines you should have no issues with the top in the snowy winter months.
My opinion is that a Cab with a hardtop is the best of both worlds if you can do it. Open air motoring spring, summer, fall. Cozy hardtop for cold snowy winters.
The top weighs 70 lbs and takes two to lift on and off. You can get a cart to roll it around but still need a place to store it. You can get/build a top-lift that will enable you to mount/dismount it alone, but you need a place (ceiling) to hang it from.
It sounds like a ridiculously low price but I've seen them for that price more than once. There's a couple on eBay that ended at $300 with no bids on them.
