Suggestion

If the fluid has not been changed, that is an easy job and offers some rewards, plus if it doesnt solve the issue at least you know when the oil was changed last - I recommend Swepco - 210 (got it right this time, sometimes I forget if its 210 or 201, but its 210 for your car)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

About time I introduce myself after lurking around quietly for a year. I bought this C2 a year ago and Im just blown away by it. Ive owned rear-engined vintage stuff but this is my first Porsche and its a stunning piece of machinery to drive. Im so enjoying it. The car is a 2002 six-speed in Seal Grey with heated sport seats, 18 wheels, Litronics, PSM and 117,000 kms (72k miles) on the clock. Its all stock except H&R springs, clear lenses, and a Nakamichi stereo with an iPod hook-up. Ive put on fresh P Zeros, checked the alignment and done the 100,000 km service but it has needed little else - an ignition switch and a brake switch ... oil changes. Its now my daily driver - sold my A4 as it was not being used! Ive already put 20,000 kms on it in a year ... and my office is a short walk from the kitchen. One question: the shifter feels a little stiff going across the gate (ie: across from third/fourth to first/second). I took the shifter apart and checked it and lubed it but its still the same. Could it be the shifter cable(s)? Easy to lube/change? Anyway, thanks for being out there and sharing your knowledge and experience. This forum has been fantastic for a first-time owner. And fun to read .... The obligatory newbie pics ... some shots taken over the past year ...

Great looking car Billy. Glad you came out of the shadows..

POST 4Original post

Howdy Neighbor !! Beautiful ride ! - welcome to the bright side

POST 6Original post

Welcome aboard. Glad you can join us! BTW... love the stance with the lowering springs

POST 7Original post

Congrats and welcome. Nice car. My 996 is a little rough between 1st and 2nd gear. I think my synchros are bad and I probably need a transmission rebuild. You may need the same, or maybe not. It may just take some getting used to. Good luck and enjoy!

POST 8Original post

Looking good Newb! That's a great combo in my opinion. The lightweight wheels are perfect... Thanks for posting pics as well.

POST 9Original post

Welcome - great color choice! Great looking car. Are your H&R lowering springs combined with the stock struts? If so, how would you describe the ride and handling characteristics?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

X51 - I don't know if the car still has the stock struts - is it easy to tell? The ride is excellent for me - very firm with optimum handling but still OK for long drives. A friend has a 997 S with the PASM sport/touring modes and my car feels a tad firmer than the sport setting. Dennis - I don't see it as a syncro issue, it's a left/right movement with the shifter ... so a sticky cable I suspect I love the colour/wheel/option combo. It's exactly what I wanted. I found the car while cruising on Craigslist ... it turned out to be tucked in a garage 4 doors from my house ...

POST 11Original post

Yeah, it's funny how you sometimes find the perfect car in your backyard. I have pretty much your car in color, wheels and options, except in the Targa variant. Seal grey is a really nice color. It doesn't show dirt too badly, yet still rewards you when you clean it up (unlike silver) with a nice shine.

POST 12Original post

RE left and right sticky: might be a worn shift box - 996 stock boxes are known to wear also cables - or maybe trans fluid. If the fluid has not been changed, that is an easy job and offers some rewards, plus if it doesnt solve the issue at least you know when the oil was changed last - I recommend Swepco - 210 (got it right this time, sometimes I forget if its 210 or 201, but its 210 for your car)

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks ivangene - never thought of the shifter box itself and you are right, the trans fluid may never have been changed (don't think it was in the 100,000 k service ...) Caf - I thought about a Targa but figured it a long shot to find one ... like yours! Yes, good colour for masking dirt ..
