I actually like the reddish color of the instruments; I won’t consider replacing those.

Yes, they are great on the inside b/c you can use colors, or if you go standard white, it is ultrawhite, not yellowish.

I’ve tried the use of LEDs in other cars for exterior lighting, and I just was never satisfied due to hot-spotting and off-axis brightness issues, fast blinking, splicing in resistors, worrying about heat, etc.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is anyone other than me interested in a comprehensive list of LED replacement bulbs?
I think technology/price has finally come around on LEDs for the Pcar.
Currently I am in the process of measuring diameters of all the interior bulbs and their housings on both my cars. I've ordered some LEDs and will be fitting them soon. In all of this I realize there seems to be a lack of info regarding the conversion sizes. By this, I mean that the LEDs often come in various widths/lengths depending on the app.
If there is interest, I will type up a comprehensive list with actual measurements of stock bulbs and the comparable LED options.
Aaron
I'm not interested; however, for all my other LED projects i've used
http://www.superbrightleds.com/
IMO the brightness just doesn't compare to incandescent bulbs right now. The cost is better, and efficiency is much higher, but hard to get enough light out of them w/o large arrays.
Keep me posted, i'm interested to see how this turns out.
Cheers
Looks cool! I don't know if I'm up for going behind the dash. From what I've learned so far, you would want to make sure his LEDs have heat sinks in them. Otherwise a constant on app like that may cause premature failure of the bulb.
Yeah, I took a look at their other auctions and saw that... that seemed to be a little more complicated. It then occurred to me that if you were to convert the main display, then you would have to also do the AC unit to make it match and it then seemed a whole lot less appealing.
I still like the look though. My Acura has a white and blue display and it looks incredibly clean.
Mac,
As of this weekend I have a set of amber LEDs in my side markers. They are a 360 degree set up and currently are as bright if not slightly brighter than stock. Looks cool too! Now I just have to wait and see about service length.
I think the price has come down quite a bit and the technology has improved a lot.
I had LEDs in my last cayenne. They looked great, but back then they were not polarized and didn't have heat sinks. Many of them died after a year, and they were all $10 bucks a piece.
I'll keep u posted.
Cool! Any chance you can post photos? I'd love to see them. I thought that they were supposed to have a long service life. My main reservation has been brightness/visibility in an auto application, plus heat dissipation within the light unit... plus on top of that the price was still high enough that you would hate to buy all the stuff and have a failed experiment that didn't work.
I'd love to see the list as you put it together... this could be my next mod if they work out okay for you.
Are the pics too big??? if so you can resize them with photo shop software, MS Paint, or on a web site like:

No, honest, check the upload page. It has a link if you're having problems, but I use yahoo, so the link is useless. I have searched and can't find an email address for the webmaster that isn't a friggin link. Anyone??
Anyway, I got the 44mm festoons installed and the 194 wedge bulbs with heat sinks are awesome! New flat LEDs are nice and bright, cool to the touch, and put out a nice pattern. Very happy so far.
^^^^
I'm curious to see how they look as well. How about trying to host the pics here --->

and then just cut and paste the link to the image(s) back here on RL.
Thanks!
Thanks to FAST...here we go
Both are of the LED amber tower, which consists of 9 LEDs. One is a close-up and the other I pulled back a little to show contrast with the headlight.
Yes, they are great on the inside b/c you can use colors, or if you go standard white, it is ultrawhite, not yellowish. I went with red in my domelight, so I can stay stealthy...(pics to follow)
I’ve tried the use of LEDs in other cars for exterior lighting, and I just was never satisfied due to hot-spotting and off-axis brightness issues, fast blinking, splicing in resistors, worrying about heat, etc. It became not worth the hassle of buying and trying, buying and trying, etc.
The one place where I think they might make a nice small difference might be on the license plate bulb.
The overhead and door interior bulbs might be nice to switch to LEDs, for some light that is slightly less yellowish, and I’ve pulled a few bulbs to find some possible replacements, but it’s tricky because usually the incandescent bulbs make light by reflecting off of the internal housing, where as LEDs fire usually in a narrow view. The festoon type LED bulbs will work well in the large overhead light, but the smaller, side, map lights might be difficult to source correctly.
I actually like the reddish color of the instruments; I won’t consider replacing those.
JMHO, YMMV, etc.
Ok, here are my first shots of the interior LEDs.
I have to say that the new generation are very good. The brightness is much better. Probably twice as bright as previous LEDs and as bright as stock bulbs.
The first set of pics show a 2nd gen Red 9 LED festoon bulb with 2 1st gen white wedge bulbs.
The pics were taken at night. The last pic is to try to show the light output.
Here are a few shots of the blue LEDs in my wife's cayenne.
They are 2nd gen 194 W5W SuperNova LEDs w/ aluminum heat sinks.
All the newer gen LEDs I got from autolumination.com (no affiliation)
So here's a few specs:
The dome light is a 44mm festoon bulb.
Map lights are 194 W5W bulbs. The opening can take 10-12mm diameter, but you can pop the lens off and load a wider bulb that way.
Side Markers are 194 9 LED towers and they just barely fit.
I have a semi related question. I would like to put a functioning switch into one of the dummy switch locations on the center console (beneath the PSM switch). For this application I need the light on the switch to be an LED, and I think the stock light is a 12V bulb. Can I replace the bulb in the switch with an LED?
Tim, I am putting in a laser jammer and the kill switch has an integrated LED. I don't want to drill any holes in my car to mount that switch so would like to use a Porsche switch as a substitute (one of the unused center console switch locations). I think the Porsche switches come with a 12V bulb though. If I can't get the switch to light up when the jammer is on, I'll need a separate LED which would defeat the whole idea of keeping an OEM look.
I like your idea, especially the part about keeping the OEM look for the kill switch.
I have never taken one of the illuminated dash switches apart so I don't know if there is a 12V bulb in them or not. I wonder if it could be an LED in there? Have you already tried to wire the laser jammer to an OEM illuminated switch?
Which OEM switch are you planing to use? The door lock switch, or the rear window defroster switch, or a seat heater switch all have an "indicator light" already built into them that becomes illuminated in a color when the switch is ON. I think one of them would work just "as is" unless I am missing something here.
Tim,
Let me do a little diggin on this for ya. If I don't get back in a timely fashion, PM me to remind me.
My comprehensive list kind of stalled b/c of the basic lack of standardization in lighting. There apparently is no popular scale for measuring useable light output.
In my LED quest I have found 3 inherent issues so far.
1. Light output - how much useable light a particular LED puts out.
2. Heat sinks - constant on LEDs seem to require heat sinks to reduce premature failure.
3. Quality - In the beginning I got a regular number of DOA bulbs, and the others were inconsistant. Often they would fail prematurely. This seems to be getting better.
The quality and durability seems to be getting better. Light output still is an issue. I think current LEDs are fine for parking lights and interior lights, but I would hesitate to use them for Brake lights.
