Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Let's see, no lift, no enclosed repair facility with heat , lighting etc., no 'certified' Porsche training...wouldn't you like to profit the same in your business?
Leading evidence: 'starter' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair facility' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The switch is the lesser of the evils and you might try asking the dealer to deduct the switch change from a possible starter needed repair if he is wrong.

I'm assuming it's the starter, but I seem to recall a Porsche dealer telling me that I should replace the key switch as preventative maintenance.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mk1 3.4 here, 49K miles on her.
The starter seems to be hanging up after the car starts (a loud metalic shrill sound - hitting fly wheel).
I'm assuming it's the starter, but I seem to recall a Porsche dealer telling me that I should replace the key switch as preventative maintenance. I passed as there was no problem at the time. Can the key switch be causing this? It's very random when it does occur. Sometimes when it's cold (first start of the day) and sometimes on a warm start-up. Very random........
Other than that, bullet-proof so far!
Thanks
Thanks!
I do know the key switch is very inexpensive, but rather than wasting more money, I would like to know if the switch would cause the starter hang-up problem.
The switch is not covered under the warranty, however the starter is........
possible.... its like you keeping the key in start position (even though it has already turned over)... maybe the switch is not disconnect at the right time.
The switch is known to cause electrical gremlins. BTW its a 15min job and a cheap part. Look in the DIY section on Renntech.
Switch or solenoid of the starter sticking. With switches like the ignition when parts wear the operation of positioning for which contacts are made goes bad ie crank still enabled some times.
The switch is the lesser of the evils and you might try asking the dealer to deduct the switch change from a possible starter needed repair if he is wrong.
Is it done from under the car or from the usless little rear hatch? I still do not understand why they didnt make a hatch in the back for engine access.
Takes an hour or two for me to do it in my driveway. And you can get a starter for under $300 everyday of the week. Now Porsche charges over $700 far a OEM starter , and obviously alot more labor.
from the rear hatch..... I thought the same thing, An inside access hatch would of been nice.... I guess Porsche dont want their interiors to get all dirty and greased up.
Let's see, no lift, no enclosed repair facility with heat , lighting etc., no 'certified' Porsche training...wouldn't you like to profit the same in your business? Why so agressive in their pricing?
Because they can. Apparently, there are enough people out there that are able to pay the piper.............
Shes back! Even a day without her is an eternity
a friend of mine takes her 993 to the dealer.... trust me $1100 for a starter is chicken scratch. If you dont have the means and you want your car worked on by "real porsche people" that is just what it costs.
glad it is fixed, hope the price is worth it to you (even if others think its a lot, it only has to make sense to you)
Ya know Ed you really cant blame them for what they charge. I just have ways of doing to cheaper.
I knock the dealer. But honestly, I dont have to go there... and everyone has that same right and choice. I can tell you Im not the cheapest in what I do, In fact I am, I think the most costly computer guy in Erie... and I get 120/hr to get out of my chair and 30$ just to take your 5 min phone call. I dont even get dirty.
If you bought the car new, How much was in 80-90K? If you paid that foir a car you dont have a leg to stand on to bitch about 1100 for a starter.... I think its us 2nd and 3rd owners that knock the dealer more than anyone.
So I really dont have anything against the dealer. But I dont use them either.
I agree, but dont want someone to feel like crap because thaty was the choice they made. $1100 repair vs $300 is a big deal, but if it makes sense to you (i.e. you dont have to get dirty) then I wont be the one to point it out.
I am like you (well except I dont make squat for income) but I am a happy with second hand, get dirty and get the best for my money even if it take 2 weeks and only saves a couple hundred bucks... some people are more comfortable with a trip to the dealer... that's all I was being nice
I'd always try it myself. Does anyone know what it takes to do a heater core in a 99 Beetle? Did it in 2 days with the book from the Library, and 2 hours extra with 1 friend. Got it done, didn't leak. Did it outside in my driveway with my 2 Big German Shepherd Dogs helping me----saved about $800.00
