I was thinking about the way it looks real clean especially with the carbon fiber setup.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anybody running the K&N 57 series cold air intake? And if so, how do you like it? I did a search, but im not sure if the one mentioned it the 57 series I see. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

+1..got mine, uninstalled (Part No. 57-7000). Awaiting my exhaust system (otw). I received 2 unfavorable comments reg. K&N unit, being less inferior to other options & involving drilling holes into the car..

What is the cover over the filter?

POST 6Original post

Yes, there appears to be a cover over the filter. ???

POST 7Original post

It's called a prefilter...to stop the large "contaminants" from getting deep into the pleats.

POST 8Original post

Do a search on this topic. I've heard of MAF sensors going bad after installing K&N's. Don't get me wrong, I have a K&N on my Tundra but after reading posts, I decided not to do on my 996. Do search and decide for yourself.

POST 9Original post

It was suggested that over oiling was the issue with the K&N that triggered a MAF failure. I don't have one on my 911, but I've used the drop in K&N in several other vehicles and had no issues.

POST 10Original post

I have the K&N CAI system on my Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and I love it. The sound is awesome and now the engine seems to have more power, and it idles at a lower rpm. Did I mention it sounds great? However, when I opened the box containing the system for my 996 and read the directions, I declined to install it. The quality of the parts was not - in my opinion - sufficient for me to do the install. I also was not thrilled about the required drilling. I went to Plan B - a K&N filter to replace the stock air filter.

good move.... how is the exhaust note, louder?

POST 12Original post

First let me qualify by saying that I've had both the BMC + Stock and the EVOMS CAI on my 911. I would say that you will get as good a result (pedal and sound) by just dropping in a BMC F1 filter into the stock air box. Mine is for sale for $50 + $5 shipping if anyone is interested, just PM me. As far as the K&N is concerned, try to keep the filter as dry as possible w/ the lightest coat of oil possible. Take a new filter and wrap it in paper towels, then blow some compressed air through the filter (opposite direction of normal flow) to blow out any excessive oil. You should be fine. I agree that the quality of the K&N does not compare to let's say an EVOMS CAI. But it's way better than some of the Fabspeed crap that people use. I mean, $225 for a red hose and cap, really?

POST 13Original post

I've had one on my car for 3.5 years. I have one of the early kits with the old design heat shield. I have never used the prefilter and never had a problem with the general setup. In fact the only issue I had was the weather seal separated. I contacted K&N late last year and they sent me a new seal for free. I will say it gets dirty pretty frequently, so I clean and oil my filter every 3 months. About the comments about being so careful with the oiling above, it is total BS. I have cleaned and oiled mine at least 10 times and I don't doing any special when oiling it. I just spray on the filter oil until the filter surface is completely covered and wipe off the excess on the ends. I do have a warning, I have seen multiple people install EVOMS and K&N intakes on earlier 996s (99-01) and damage their MAFs. You need to be very careful pulling your MAF out of the airbox and inserting it in the air tube. When you pull it out, rotate it side to side and pull straight. If you pull it at an angle or hit the hot wire pulling it out or inserting it in, you can easily damage. With the earlier MAFs as the hot wire is well exposed, it is easy to damage them if you don't know what you are doing.

I'm running the BMC now and about to try out the EVOMS. Did you notice much of a difference between the two?

POST 15Original post

Anybody thinking about the TechArt or Gemballa intakes? Anyone know the cost on these? I was thinking about the way it looks real clean especially with the carbon fiber setup. Does someone have this running on their 996? hp tq numbers on a stock 996 with an intake add on. Does the price of other vendors justify for performance or will I be throwing money away for just sound? Why not just add a GT3 or GT2airbox and be done with it wouldn't this work?

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 7322819

Honestly, not really. I think in some ways the BMC sounded better, a little deeper and gurgly. The EVOMS has a little whhoosh added to it. Pedal response seemed the same. Both are good products.

POST 17Original post

the cover is labeled as a dry cover, to keep water out of filter, it is anti water materal. I guess to keep the water from the hood grill from soaking the filter. Ive had K&Ns on every car Ive owned for 20 yrs and never any problems. So I wonder if it really causes maf trouble on a 911? And I wonder if every 911 has bad rms?

POST 18Original post

The 928 guys are not fans of the K and N stuff for anything but track. The "pro's" claim they do not filter as good as the stock unit causing damage over years of use.

POST 19Original post

I have a K&N on my Jeep and Harley, love 'um. But being on #3 MAF on the Carrera and reading for years the horror stories and issues associated with aftermarket oil wetted gauze type filters, I'm leaving well enough alone. Seems like on Porsches, they will trigger a CEL which will eventually necessitate refitting the original air box and stock dry filter. It's about getting misting oil contaminating the hotwire sensor on the MAF. Once damaged, cleaning will very seldom work and replacement is your only option. Some dealers charge in the $500-$600 range for diagnosis and replacing the MAF, or DIY for $300-$400.
